Chapter-11
All four of us were now wearing lab coats as we roamed around, trying to find the cure. I peered in every room we passed by and saw people in wealthy suits signing documents countless times. I clenched my jaw in anger. It seemed as though the cure was only for the privileged.
"I found some stairs," called Ana softly. All of us hurried over to her. Stairs were spiralling down as far as I could see. At least they were well lit.
We cautiously began our descent. To my surprise, we found no one who stopped us. I frowned. This was too easy for top-notch security. Something was wrong.
"Listen to me," ordered Cali. Her face was lined with worry.
"We need to grab that cure and get out as soon as possible. There shouldn't be any dawdling."
She glanced at me. I bit back an indignant response.
"None of you are going to get hurt and worry me. Do you understand?" she said sharply.
Everyone nodded.
Cali's face softened a bit.
"Good. I have no freaking clue how but I have to come to appreciate all of you and I am not losing anyone."
Zeno looked as though he'd just seen pigs fly. That pretty much summed up my feelings as well. Cali had just said something nice.
"Oh, come on." she snapped and hurried down the stairs. All of us sighed and followed.
We found ourselves in a long hallway with the walls painted grey like the rest of the building and doors made of steel. I bit my lip. There was no way we'd be able to break in and grab the cure just like that.
Cali motioned for us to follow through the twisting corridor. We crept across silently until we came across a fork.
"Should we split up?" asked Ana, worriedly.
Zeno stared at her.
"Have you ever seen a horror movie? Splitting up is a bad idea."
"For once, I agree with you." said Cali." Splitting up would be faster but going together might be more effective. Come on."
She made her way down right-handed fork. Zeno was so shocked that Cali had agreed with him that he looked as though he'd seen pigs fly twice. I just sighed.
Cali raised a hand and stopped us in our tracks. Voices could be heard from just around where the fork bent.
All of us were silent. If anyone came around, we'd be caught in seconds. And we hadn't managed to locate the cure yet. I swallowed and tried not to think about the military and their guns.
Instead, I focused on Nell. Her sister. Her cousin. Countless others who would die if we didn't get the cure.
Zeno crept up and peered around the bend. Suddenly, there was a sound of a door opening. And then all of us heard the terrible moans and growls.
"Guys," he said, looking horrified, "You should see this."
I walked over to him. And shuddered. Zombies were tied up on the clean white beds with strong iron chains as scientists extracted blood from them.
