Chapter-10

What I wasn't expecting was how many military guards stood outside the city with guns in their hands and frowns on their faces.

Cali bit her lip, wondering how to proceed. Zeno looked unhappy probably because there was no zombies around for him to kill.

Ana drove slowly towards the entrance. A guard barred our way.

"Yes?" he called out.

"We're here to pick up some supplies," said Ana smoothly. I stared at her. She was a little too good at acting. She might have convinced me if I hadn't known her. However, it seemed as though the guard had to deal with this every day.

"Looking for the cure?" he sneered.

All of us managed to keep our faces neutral, even Zeno.

"What's the problem?" asked another guard, coming over.

The first guard looked at us apologetically.

"The thing us, no one travels such a great distance to deliver supplies. Otherwise, I would have bought the act."

All of us were silent.

"I suppose we could use some more workers in the lab." He raised his eyebrows. "It's not like the cure is for common people anyway. It's secured in the vaults," he said, waving a hand. Apparently, he thought we were harmless.

"Quickly, before Tim sees." He said, gesturing towards the gates.

Ana wasted no time as she stepped on the accelerator and we shot through the doors, leaving dust in our wake.

"What are we going to do now?" I asked Cali.

She bit her lip thoughtfully.

"Stop here," she said. Ana stopped the car in what seemed to be a parking lot. Our jeep looked oddly out of place, battered as it was. Zeno threw a tarp over it.

The lab was a huge grey building, surrounded by large leafy trees. There was nothing else remarkable about it except for the helicopter landing pads on the roof.

"Hurry." beckoned Cali, sneaking her way to the unguarded entrance doors.

"Do you even know where the cure is?" I hissed, following her.

She sighed.

"Stop asking stupid questions, Axel. The guard at the gate just told us that it's in the vaults. Now, stop dawdling about."

I was too stunned by the fact that she'd used my real name instead of 'Pretty Boy' to argue. We slipped inside. The halls were clean and well lit, with several cupboards lining the walls. Cali gestured for all of us to crouch behind one.

Many doors probably leading to rooms and even more, corridors also lined the wall. I was still trying to figure out which door to enter when Cali hissed. Footsteps were approaching us.

"Now!" she said. Zeno jumped out and thumped Bad Baby on the heads of the two doctors passing by. Cali tied them up and pulled off their lab coats, throwing it to Ana and me.

"What's this?" I asked holding up the spotless white coat.

"We're going to enter the labs wearing these to avoid suspicion," Ana told me softly. I looked at Cali. I had to admit this was a good plan.

"But we only have two."

She smiled slightly.

"I suppose we could wait for a few minutes more for someone else to come by."
