Chapter 1
I wake up in my bed in the orphanage. I yawn, I brush my teeth, and I go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast. I get my usual, oatmeal and milk. I find a seat next to my best friend Raney. She's really tall and has bright blue eyes. She is the fastest swimmer I know.
Today Raney brings up something unusual. "Do you ever feel like your connected to something? More than you are to anything else?" I was about to say no until I remembered about the forest, and I knew something at this moment was going to happen. "Yes" I say, "I feel connected to the forest behind the orphanage." Raney smiled, "I feel connected to water. I have a secret, but this isn't the place to tell you." She said eyeing all the people in the cafeteria. "Where do you want to tell me?" "Meet me in my room after breakfast." "Alright." Raney didn't talk to me for the rest of breakfast. I always thought my life would be nothing special. I always thought I would be just another normal orphan, but I knew that when Raney had a secret it meant something big, but I didn't think it was going to be as big as it was.
After breakfast I followed Raney to her room. When I got in there I was surprised at how different it looked from yesterday. Her sink was filled to the top, her floor was wet, and her bed wasn't made. Raney is the neatest person I know, how could this of happened? "I know what you're thinking, you're surprised that my room is so messy, but you'll understand after I tell you my secret." I just nodded unsure of what was going to come next. "As I already told you I have always felt a connection to water. Well yesterday while I was brushing my teeth I was thinking about how it would be cool if I could shape water. I prepared myself to laugh and call myself stupid when I started to pretend to shape water, but it worked.
I actually shaped water, and when I went to sleep I had a dream. There was a water droplet a leaf, fire, and I felt cool wind blowing on my face. Then I knew there must be four people who each represented an element, and I thought you might be one of them. I was shocked, I couldn't think of anything to say. "I know it's hard to believe but it's true, I'll show you." Raney half brought me half dragged me to her bathroom. I couldn't believe my eyes, Raney had shaped the water into a fish. When she put it back into the sink it swam around, until Raney put her hand in the water, then the fish disappeared.
"It may not be me." I said, "It could be someone else." "It has to be you. Your name sounds like the forest, and you are the only other person I know who has a connection with something." "It can't be me. I'm not special. We're going to the forest and I'm proving it." I declared. "Ok then." Raney said, following me out the door and into the forest. As we walked I secretly hoped it was true, that I was special. When we got to the forest Raney sat on a rock, and looked at me, "Go ahead, prove me right." "I'm sorry Raney, but I'm not special." I focused my attention on a small flower growing out of the ground. In my mind I thought of it growing, and the results were stunning.
The flower had grown right in front of my eyes. I took a step back as I stared at the flower. "Is, is it real?" I asked no one in particular. Raney answered though, "It's real Fern, and you know it." "I, I'm not special. I never will be, I'm a normal orphan." I rambled until the world went dark.
