☽14 ☾ The Portrait

Eve walked into the warm, cozy kitchen that smelled of coffee and cinnamon buns, watching as her mom carefully took them out of the oven.

"Wipe your feet," her mother scolded, looking down at her bare feet.

"You startled me. Why do you insist on walking barefoot in the pre-dawn gloom? Do you want to be taken again?"

"No, Mother, I just enjoy the feel of being outside and feeling the dew on the grass."

"You're going to make yourself sick."

Eve busied herself placing wildflowers in an earthen vase, as she did every morning once she came back to her grandfather's cabin. She could not bring herself to go back to her former life in the city. It felt too foreign for her.

"How is grandfather this morning?"

"Much better. We are all relieved you are home safe. Did you see the paper? They want to interview you. Everyone is dying to know what happened to you."

"There is not much to say. I don't remember."

"Still, you should meet with them. Invent something so they leave us alone."

"What would be the point? The more I say, the more curious they will be."

"You have a point, but please stop acting strange."

Her mother placed a warm bun in front of her as Eve poured herself some coffee. Eve continued to hum to herself as if lost in her own little world. After her ordeal at the hospital with all the prodding and poking, she was subjected to a bunch of questions from the handsome Detective Joon. Although very disappointed by her evasive answers, he continued to visit, hoping she would remember more. She didn't mind his visits, as she enjoyed strolling with him through the forest. He probably thought it would jar her memory, a wish she also shared.

Eve couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in her chest like a heavy stone. It was the one thing that she hadn't shared. The portrait of the baby seemed to hold secrets she couldn't comprehend, its eyes following her every move as if pleading for recognition. She tucked it away in a drawer, unable to confront its silent accusation.

As days turned into weeks, Detective Joon's visits became a regular occurrence, each one punctuated by his gentle inquiries and unwavering support. His genuine concern touched her heart, offering a glimmer of solace amidst the chaos of her fractured memories.

Meanwhile, Deputy Jung's infectious optimism served as a constant reminder of the brighter moments that lay beyond the shadows of her past. His playful banter and irrepressible spirit brought moments of laughter and levity, offering respite from the weight of her burdens. His vibrant imagination came up with unlikely scenarios of how she disappeared. It was as if he enjoyed making her laugh and taking the darkness from the situation. Joon's serious nature didn't seem to like his antics and sometimes sent Jung away. Jung just smiled. A huge smile that brightened the room. He leaned over conspiratorially and whispered, "he's just jealous," and gave her a wink.

Joon looked irritated by his talkative deputy and rolled his eyes. Jung responded with his back to him, "I saw that."

"I just want to know how you are doing. You've gone through an ordeal, and I hope you will consider me a friend and not just a detective," Joon said with a serious look.

"Thank you," she replied, "I feel like I've lost a part of me, but I've gained two new friends. Please don't worry about me; I will be fine."

Yet, beneath the facade of normalcy, whispers of the supernatural lingered in the air, casting doubt upon the fragile semblance of reality. Strange occurrences continued to haunt the outskirts of town, their origins shrouded in mystery and speculation.

Eve found herself drawn to the edge of the forest, the whispering trees beckoning her with their tantalizing secrets. Each rustling leaf seemed to echo with the echoes of her forgotten past, teasing her with fragments of a puzzle she couldn't decipher.

In the quiet moments of solitude, she traced the lines of the portrait with trembling fingers, searching for answers in the depths of its soulful gaze. Who was the child in the painting, and why did its presence stir such turmoil within her heart?

As the days stretched into months, Eve's resolve hardened, fueled by an insatiable hunger for the truth. She delved into the depths of her memories, sifting through fragments of half-remembered dreams and fleeting glimpses of a reality that seemed just beyond her grasp.

With each passing day, the threads of her past began to unravel, revealing hidden truths and long-buried secrets that threatened to consume her whole. Yet, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, one thing remained steadfast — the unwavering bonds of friendship that anchored her to the world.

In the heart of the forest, where shadows danced with the light of the moon, Eve stood on the precipice of discovery, her gaze fixed upon the horizon as she braced herself for the revelations that lay ahead. With courage as her compass and hope as her guide, she embarked on a journey into the unknown, ready to confront the darkness that lurked within and embrace the light that beckoned her home.
