Chapter Thirteen: "Night And Dawn."
I stare at the passing images, realizing my life isn't normal and probably never will be. It's hard to accept. I can't run nor hide but suffer the the pain one person is giving me.
"Valerie," Matthew shakes me, "we are here sweetie. Get your lazy butt out the car."
"I'm coming," taking Matthews arm to help me up.
I could feel the chilly air on my bare skin, making me shiver. That's my fault for only wearing a sweatshirt and shorts.
I can finally get my Pacific. When we entered, only a few people were there. We had to past aisles of food and pet toys until we found the pound. There was a women at the counter. Beautiful raven hair and Hazel nut eyes. She was wearing blue jeans matched with a gray shirt that saids 'Animal Lover'.
"Hello, how may I help you?" she smiles softly.
I hesitated to reply, "I'm looking for a white Pomeranian dog with different color eyes."
She looked over thought her papers on her clipboard. She shook her head, smiling sadly.
"I'm sorry miss the dog you're look for isn't here,"
"Was she already adopted?" thinking I was too late.
She shook her head again, "No, she died from pregnancy. We only have her puppies. Four weeks old. Do you want to adopt one of them?"
I nodded, wordlessly. She motioned her to follow her while I informed dad. He nodded and followed Matthew to the dog toy aisle. Many different dogs barked at us as we passed and I was greeted by the smell of wet dog. Finally I spot thirteen white Pomeranians and I almost died from cuteness.
"Does any of these puppies interest you for adoption?" she smiled down at me.
I looked around and spotted another Pomeranian puppy in a different cell. I looked through the glass and stared at the puppy.
"Why is this one separated?"
"Well she bites her siblings a lot. Many people tried to adopt her but she wouldn't even let them get near her. She was adopted a few weeks back and someone found her left on the streets, filled with bruises head to toe. Poor thing," she explains.
"May I try?"
She nods, "It's a bit dangerous for you but you knew her mom didn't you?"
I nod, wordlessly. She unlocked the door and let me in. The first reaction of the puppy was to growl at me and back up to the far corner. I sat down the opposite corner, hugging my knees. I know dogs are able to understand everyday you tell them.
"I know your mother. She was like you. I found her on the streets, trying to avoid getting hit by any cars. I saved her. I thought I could keep her but they pulled her away from me,"
I started to ramble on about my problems, hoping the glass was sound proof. The lady had to explain to dad the situation, which surprisingly, dad let me stay in the cell. He and Matthew drove to get food. Orange chicken, yum. I don't mind eating in here, only because it didn't smell that bad in here. After a good thirty minutes, dad came back and delivered me my food.
"I'll let you two have one more hour together," dad whispers while giving me my food.
"Thank you," I whispered back.
I'm curious in what pet Matthew adopted, after I realize Matthew also tagged along to adopt a pet. I took the first bite of my food and was instantly in food coma. After a little while, I noticed someone was drooling. I finally took a good look that her. She looked like her mother but she didn't have different color eyes. Her eyes was bright blue and her fur Snow White. I took my phone out and called the lady to get her dog biscuits. Slowly she gave me a dog bacon bag, after a good five minutes of waiting.
"Don't worry about paying," she smiled.
"Thank you," I smiled.
She closed the door again and walked away. I sat back down at my little corner. I opened the bag and ripped the first bacon into little bits and softly threw it towards her.
Slowly she ate but hesitated to come near me.
I tired to think of a name for her in the meanwhile.
"Dawn," I whispered.
She instantly looked up. Her eyes were the color of the sky at dawn.
"Dawn?"
She barked. Slowly she walked towards me and nuzzled her nose on my hands. I gently patted her hand. I guess she liked the name. It took two hours and a half to earn her trust. She's just a like me though.
"Wanna go home now Dawn?"
She barked, swaying her tail excitedly. I took my phone out, it was only five percent. I called the lady and she unlocked to door. I walked out and Dawn followed.
"I'm surprised, you were able to earn her trust,"
"Took a while," I laughed.
"Well the only thing you have to do is fill these papers in," she handed me a clipboard with papers once we were out of the pound.
"Hey," Matthew greeted me with a pat on the head.
"What pet did you get?" I asked with curiousity.
"Straight to the point without a greeting. Husky puppy,"
"Pomeranian puppy,"
"Mines a boy named Night,"
"Oh no, are we going to have Husky Pomeranian puppies!"
"Why are you always thinking of someone giving birth?" Matthew laughs.
I shrug and continue to fill out the papers. Took me a while to wake up dad and drag him to make him sign his signature.
Finally I'm bring Dawn home and Matthews taking Night.
"Night and Dawn," I whisper.
"Why'd you name her Dawn? I named him Night because his fur is a raven color. I couldn't named him Raven because it seems too much of a feminine name," Matthew replied.
"Her eyes are the color of the sky at Dawn," I explained.
I stared at the puppy snoring on my lap while Night sits comfortably on the empty middle seat, between Matthew and I. Time flew by and we were home. I ran up to my room with Dawn in my arms. I jumped on my bed, embracing my little baby. She barked, licking my face. I set her down on one of my softest pillows and she soon found herself dreaming about bacons. Her face says it all.
I laid myself on my window bed. I thought of my moms words, 'able to see under the vail.' I accept the fact my life isn't 'normal'. I actually liked the thought of being different and having this crazy ability.
"Val, where did you go? There you are," I heard a cute voice cry happily.
Suddenly Dawn jumped on my lap. I just blinked, hoping I'm hearing things.
"Why are you so quiet?" Dawn tilted her head.
"How are you speaking to me?" I question.
"Telepathy,"
"You're only four weeks old. How do you even know that word?"
"Lila has been teaching me,"
"Lila?" the name feels familiar but I have a hazy memory during the car crash.
"Let's go to church tomorrow, and you'll see," jumping down and running towards the bed.
"I didn't see that coming," I scratch my head, in a confused manner.
