Chapter 20
"Deku." He could hear someone call his name but it sounded distant like there was a wall between him and who ever was speaking. "Deku?" The voice called again. He knows that it was definitely his name but he couldn't figure out who was saying it. "Deku wake up you lazy bum!"
Startling awake he found himself on floor of his room, Eri and Dabi standing over him. Eri he could understand, there wasn't enough room for the girl to have her own room and she only really felt safe enough to sleep near him meaning that another single bed had taken up refuge in his room. Dabi on the other hand had no business being in his room.
"Dabi." Deku smiled sweetly. "You have five seconds to tell me what you're doing in my room before I do something you won't like." He added in a sickeningly sweet tone.
Dabi pointed to Eri. "She couldn't wake you and was worried you were dead. I offered a hand."
"Does this have something to do with my current position on the floor?" Deku asked gritting his teeth a little.
"Nah dude you did that yourself probably during the night of you even actually made it to bed." Dabi snickered. He vaguely remember falling and then nothing but that wasn't his problem anymore.
"Deku?" Eri spoke up softly. "Are we going shopping today?" She asked, blinking shyly. Oh yea, he promised Eri and Toga they'd go shopping today. Sure he had money but he guessed it might not be enough to get the girl everything she wanted. Toga was coming to help them acquire new items and help Eri try clothes on.
"Right, let me get ready and then we can head off." Deku told the girl who lite up and nodded, skipping out leaving him and Dabi. "Are you going to leave or what?"
"Are you going to get off the floor or what?" Dabi retorted before leaving with his hands in his pocket.
Finally alone he got off the floor and dusted himself off before going through his bag for his wallet and other necessities. He didn't bother changing considering he was lazy and was still looked decent enough that people wouldn't think he was homeless or up to something. Leaving his room he passes handyman and they exchanged their usual greeting of the middle finger bed or heading to the main living area of the base. Toga was already up and dressed along with Twice, Mr Compress who now had a cool new prosthetic arm, and obviously Kurogiri who seemed to always be up when ever Deku was. He had a sneaking suspicion the mist man never slept despite having his own room at the base, he'd yet to prove it.
"Deku! Are you ready?" Toga greeted enthusiastically when she spotted him emerge.
"It's too early for you to be this loud." He grumbled in response.
"It's like one in the afternoon"
"What's you point?" He looked at her with a raised eye brow before walking for the door seeing Toga and Eri follow from the corner of his eye.
"Would you like me to take you?" Kurogiri asked before they left.
Deku blinked realising that they didn't organise a lift and the nearest shopping centre was a 45 minute journey if you were a fast walker. There was no way Eri would be able to make it with out stopping a couple times.
"Yea that'd be great." He replied a little sheepishly as Kurogiri sighed. The man opened a portal and the four of them stepped through. "Meet me here in 2 hours or you'll have to walk back." They were warned before the man left and the portal closed.
"Well, what do we do first?" Deku turned, looking at Eri.
"Let's get food." Toga replied despite his small glare.
"I was asking Eri, not you."
"Food." Eri whispered tilting her head.
Deku let out a sigh before leading the two girls to the food court where he got a bowl of fried rice and orange juice for Eri, katsudon and sprite for Toga, and fries and a ice chocolate for himself. "Deku you should really eat more" Toga commented through a mouthful of her own food.
He set a glare upon her. "Maybe I would've if you had bought your own food."
She let out a hysterical laugh. "We both know that wouldn't of happened."
"Sorry." Eri whispered pushing her food and drink towards him.
He pushes them back towards her. "If I remembered Toga liked to free load then I would've brought more money." It was a white lie, he never brought money to cover Toga's or Dabi's things usually letting them steal before they ran off together. It could take a while to get Eri uses to that behavior though.
Soon enough the trio where finished and headed off to the closest department store and heading straight to the kids section. At first Eri seemed hesitant with the free reign she was given but it seemed Toga was rubbing off on her, for better or worse, and the two girls were looking through the clothes together almost looking like sisters.
From the corner of his eye he spotted a grumpy looking boy with a horned cap with another woman. He knew that the woman was Mandalay in civilian clothes. The boy did look familiar, a name in the tip of his tonge. Mandalay noticed his staring and smiled.
"Is there something I can help you with?" The hero asked, drawing the attention of the boy.
He choked a little. "You're Mandalay right? From the wild wild pussy cats?" He played the part of fan boy pretty well, he did have practice after all.
She looked surprised that he'd recognised her. "Good eyes young man." She said after getting over her shock.
"I didn't know you had a son." Deku commented, pointing at the still grumbling boy.
"Oh, no. This is my nephew. I'd prefer if you left him out of any posts you may make later." She requested and he nodded. It was reasonable enough; the boy didn't look older than six. "Kouta come say hi."
"Are you some sort of hero wanna be?" The boy sneered.
"Nope." Deku replied with a smile shocking the boy a little.
"Then you're a hero fan boy aren't you?"
"Not really, well, I like studying the quirks, how they work and all that, and the quirks of heroes are the easiest since their on display. Would that count?"
The boy looked shell shocked at meeting someone who didn't love heroes. Understandable since he seemed to be at that age where all the other kids loved heroes with teachers encouraging it. Not to mention with heroes in the family seeing what it was truly like to be a hero opened the boys eyes.
"Say, did you two need any help? My sister is currently picking out clothes with the help of a friend of mine and I don't know much about girl clothes." The lie came out easily. While not entirely untrue, he did find this kid fascinating. Maybe he could find the cause of the kids grumpiness?
"Thank you, I can't say I know what a five year old boy wants since I'm not one myself." Mandalay sounded relieved and lead them the the boys section. He discreetly made eye contact with Toga and smiled before following the hero.
Most of the clothes were hero themed with the few that weren't being a little on the boring side. "So, what's your quirk if you don't mind me asking." He began the conversation using a common ice breaker.
"Water creation. I can make water from the tips of my fingers." The boy answered scrunching his nose up at an Endeavour themed shirt. He didn't blame the kid when he roughly put it back.
"That's so cool. I wish I had a quirk but alas I'm one if the 20 percent of humans who don't have a quirk." Kouta was mid way through picking up a black shirt that had a blue collar when he said that. Deku acted like nothing happened while noting Kouta's stunned expression.
Together they picked out a few items of clothing that Kouta liked while talking about trivial things. The boy even picked out some red sneakers that matched the ones Deku barely managed to put on earlier. It was rather flattering. Mandalay was pleased with everything picked out by them before Deku had to part ways to rejoin Toga and Eri. The girls had bee a lot more successful with their haul with dresses, pants, hair accessories, and more. He noticed that toga had picked out a couple things for herself nut said nothing.
"Ready to go?" he asked and they both nodded. "Why don't I take Eri to get a few more things while you get all this?" He added knowing the blonde would understand what he meant.
Leading the girl out of the store he headed towards a toy store and let Eri look on in wonder. "Pick out anything you want and then we'll head back okay?" Eri looked at him and smiled a full smile that melted his heart almost instantly. It made him glad they took her with them. Who knows how long it would've taken the hero's to make her this happy?
He followed Eri as she went from shelf to shelf looking over everything with an almost critical eye, it made him proud. Finally the pair made it to the section filled with soft toys and hers eyes landed on something. It was a green rabbit. Not particularly big but it looked soft and felt softer. She smiled as she held it close to her, its ears flopping down over her arms and he couldn't resist cuddling her white hair; minding the horn. After finding the rabbit Eri refused to even look at anything else so he took her to the check out and paid. They took their time heading back to the meeting place as they still had time to spare.
Along the way they met up with Toga who had a gleeful look on her eyes as she hummed. Finally at the meeting point they found Kurogiri waiting form them.
(Write this before I had wrist surgery today, I don't know when the next chapter thing will be out sorry.)
