Chapter Six // Vogue Keeps Up With Kamila Kardashian on the Set of Riverdale

Now entering her tenth year of production on the CBS series, Kamila Kardashian—who plays the daughter of the New York mayor, Jasmine Hunter —treated Vogue to an average day in her not-so-average life, from getting her morning coffee and having her nails done, to meet her driver, Brad, and heading off to shoot.

Oh hey, Vogue, I didn't see you there.

I was getting some breakfast for the day.

[melodic music]

This is how you get all the kombucha
to mix. I have a relatively long day ahead, but it's an easy one. Get my nails done, quick fitting,
and just one scene to shoot, so it's pretty light.

Going to get my coffee, run some errands, grab my phone, turn off the lights. Goodbye. No, but seriously, get out of my house.

[light music]

Hi, Helen. How are you?

Good, how are you?

Good, just a 10:30 a.m. today.

And I'll just be doing the Linkin Park After Dark,
you know, the one and only.

I wear that color for ten months out of the year; it's my Jasmine color. I love my girls here, and they take care of me. Sometimes I come here with Madelaine. When I got into Tisch, I just,
I planned to, like, be there for as little as possible and try to get an agent and get a job as soon as possible, so I could start working. I always felt like I was a little behind. I got lucky because the proper role came at the right time, right when I was graduating. I was able to go from college to living in California and New York and working full time on The Good Daughter [chuckles]. Anyone who's seen our show knows that it's absurd, and there's a lot of, like, crazy storylines.

So, like, it's not a typical shooting schedule,
we have a lot to get and very ambitious content.

So a lot of times, we'll have, like, two units working simultaneously. So if I'm not working on one episode, I'm probably working on the other episode. This is my job, my full-time job, just like anybody else's.

[upbeat music]

So we are on our way to set, so I can go to my fitting start getting in hair and makeup. This is Brad.

Hey, guys. What?

Nice, nailed it. [laughs]

Yes, Brad! [laughs]

Brad drives me to work, mostly every day, whenever I can get him.

[chuckles]

Brad and I initially bonded over music; we, like, played a lot of hip-hop and had a grand old time. Brad, what do you feel like? Out of my many playlists. I've got a lot of playlists. There are pop anthems, that's like if I'm feeling super girly and fabulous, I want to play, like, some Ariana Grande or Ariana Grande, [chuckles] it's a lot of Arianna Grande, to be honest.

We play a lot of Kanye, too.

We do play a lot of Kanye.

[smooth music]

Good, ready for another fitting?

We've got about ten looks today.

And we only got like three minutes to get them.

Yeah, it needs some love.

Cause then it gets frochy.

I always say frochy as if that's an English word. Maybe it's a Portuguese word. It sounds like forcheenu, and I think that's what I'm trying to say.

Signature nails, collar, and pearl are the final touch, always for Jasmine's wardrobe. It's just so, like, poised and refined, like Jasmine.

Yes, she has.

And Henry, our showrunner, he's very particular
about what character gets to wear what colors.

Yeah.

So, like, Jasmine's always has, Jewels, yeah, jewel tones. Deep purples and blues.

All right, now we're going to do my hair
with lovely Victoria over here.

Right up.

I got my burrito from earlier that I didn't get to finish.

[upbeat music]

Sometimes I memorize the day of, sometimes I memorize the night before; it depends on the day or the scene.

If I have a heavy day, I want to memorize the day before. I don't see episodes until they're on the air.

I like to know my work, and I want to make sure
that I'm, you know, keeping up with the show
and making sure I'm doing a good job [chuckles].

[upbeat music]

All right, off to makeup. Hi, Jules.

Usually, I have to take off my jacket for this,
just cause I need a full range of motion for my eyeliner.

Okay, so now, I will show you my bedroom
before I go to work. Cause we have time, let's go.

Here we are, my bedroom. This is, this is it.

It's one of my favorite sets to shoot in
cause it's Jasmine's set, and she owns it.

Look at this.

It's not real!

We goof around a lot on set, and everyone's always trying to make each other laugh. It's like where I spend 95% of my time. It's like a second home to all of us. This is usually where we shoot our scenes. I don't know what it is about this table, but somehow all the directors have gravitated to this table.

[ding]

On to the next set.

This is the student lounge, and we do a lot of scenes here. These are typically the most harrowing scenes
because everybody is usually very elated
when we shoot these scenes. Cause there are too many cast members in one place, and everyone's trying to be funny.

We have yet to use this room, and it's peculiar,
it's, like, this room that's built, but we've never shot anything in there, and I don't even know what it is.

[upbeat music]

Kami, we're ready for you on set.
