6: Progress

"Eww bugs! Gross!" I scream in disgust at the bug (whatever it was) that was crawling along the path I was about to go to, and automatically hide behind Leo. I really can't stand bugs. They're disgusting and slimy. "Let's walk the opposite way." I say grabbing Leo by his arm and leading the other way. Boy, it sure took a lot of guts. But after getting a scolding from Omoni, I'm in a bit of rebellious phase right now. Mainly because I was expecting to get praised and since it didn't happen, I might as well be a rebel.

"Do you like swimming?" I ask Leo. We've been walking on the beach quietly for the last few minutes. I was upset so I didn't say anything and Leo was Leo so he didn't say anything.

"A bit." He says. "Do you?"

"Nah." wait! He just asked me a question?! "What is this place anyway? Do you know? I've never been to Bali before. In fact I've never been abroad. "

I look around the endless (and empty) golden beach and listen to the waves crashing with constancy. The sun is high up in the sky and it was quite hot. I feel like I made the right decision by wearing a yellow sun dress and a hat. On the other hand I wonder if Leo was feeling hot in his jeans and full sleeved t shirt.

"I've been here before."

I turn around in surprise. Surely he can't mean he was here on a honeymoon before too? Awkward...

As if he read my mind he says,

"I came here on a vacation once with my colleagues." He elaborates.

Okay maybe not that awkward.

"I've never been to this part though. This is called Sanur if I'm not wrong. It's on southeast of the island. It has some historical value. You should know, you study history. It's a much quieter place than Kuta. I was there last time. It was a modern place compared to this."

Wow, he knows I studied history! I thought he doesn't know anything about me. Besides I dropped out before we even got to Asian history. Last thing I remember studying was the world war II. But that's beside the point,

I stare at him in amusement. It's the longest I've heard him talking and he doesn't seem to realise it.

"Really? Can we go there before we leave then? What's in there?" That's it, keep him talking. He seemed to be talking naturally as well. Weird? Then again, my mom did say that he was a talkative person to begin with. It's just after the divorce he became like this.

"Well.. It's on the southern Bali. There's the beach where people surf, some shopping complexes. It had a lot of luxury hotels too. It was a really busy place.. Packed with a lot of people.. It was a party centre. I remember going to a few clubs.. And.. Oh.. They had great restaurants."

"Great! Let's visit it before we leave then!" I smile at him as he stares at me in discomfort. He must have realised he talked too much when he wasn't supposed to. That makes me smile even more. He quickly looks away. So cute.

I hold his arm even tightly, daring him to snatch it away. But he doesn't. He just keep walking in the same rhythm.

We walk peacefully for a while before I notice that we came back close to our house. I notice a figure near our house waving her hands in the air like crazy. I poke Leo and show him the person.

"Who's that?" I ask.

"I don't know. Let's go and see." He says as we approach the person.

She looked tanned and she flashes us a huge grin as we go towards her.

"Hello.. " She greets.

"Hi!" I greet back enthusiastically. She seems friendly I don't know why.

"I brought bikes." She points at the bicycles near our front door. My face fell.

"Oh I can't bike." I say in disappointment. I've been a city chick and I never had the need to learn cycling.

"Oh." She pouts. Then she suddenly starts searching through her bag and takes out an envelope. "Here." She says.

I let go of Leo's arm and take the envelope.

"What is this?" I say as I open the envelope. I take out a small rectangular thing which looks like a sim card.

"Sim card. To call a taxi. It's expensive to use international sim here. " She says.

"Oooh!" I exclaim in realisation.

"There's all the important numbers saved already. Just call a taxi when you wish to go somewhere. There is the Bemo or motor cab if you want to save money. They don't have a fixed price, you fix with the driver a price. If you call the metered taxi then you have to pay the price it comes on the meter." She informs. "You can also call a tourist guide, they'll show you all the places to see if you don't know where to go. They have several packages. You just pick one that suits you the best."

"Really? Wow thank you. I've never been abroad before so I'm really excited."

"I can tell! It's a wonderful place! Do visit as much as you can before you leave. You won't be disappointed." She grins proudly. I realize she isn't that much older than me.

"So any suggestions? What to see here?" I ask curiously. Asking a local is better than looking over the Internet, isn't it?

"Well.. There's a lot of place to visit! It'll take a while to be honest. You could go to the Ubud moneky forest, if you're interested in animals. Or to the Bali safari park and marine park. I'm from Ubud so I'm going to do a bit of advertising. " She chuckles." There's the Ubud art market, locally referred at Pasar Seni Ubud it's a great place to buy souvenirs! They have silk scarves, handmade bags, baskets or kites. It's a really unique place. Also I'll admit I'm advertising it because my mother has a shop there." She chuckles again.

She's so honest. I like her.

"What's you name? Can't you just be our guide?" I ask in the hopes I could make a friend here. Besides the Ubud market seems interesting to me.

"Really?! Can I? I'll show all the best places! I promise!" She says in bliss.

"Great!" I agree.

*****

"Okay where are we going? And you still haven't told me your name!" I ask impatiently as soon as we sit on the car. While I went to change Leo and the guide were talking about something and I'm curious to know where they decided to go.

"Well My name is Jinhee Kim and we're going to a great restaurant." She says nonchalantly.

"Oh my god! You're korean?! Me too! " I practically scream at her ear from the back seat.

"Ouch." She says, " Yeah I know, I found out when I was talking to your husband. But my dad also told me you guys might be koreans."

"Your dad?"

"You know the one who showed you the house earlier."

I recall the man who spoke to us in broken english.

"Him? I thought he's a local."

"He is. I was an orphan so I came here at a young age to make some money. That couple took me in their business and we grew close so I think of them as my parents."

"Oh. Interesting. Do you miss korea?"

"Not really. I don't have anyone important there. This place has started to feel more like home now."

"If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?"

"27. But I've been told I look younger." She chuckles. The more she talks the more I find her cool. There's something about her attitude...

"I'm 20. I thought you're my age to be honest."

She just laughs.

Wait. I just realized I don't know how old Leo is. What if he's also older than he looks? I have to ask Omoni.

Or, I could just ask him?

"How old are you, Leo?"

He looks at me, a little surprised. He obviously didn't except me to ask something like that.

"29."

My eyes widen in shock. "W-WHAT!"

"29?! I thought you're 25 or something. Oh my god I'm so bad at guessing people's age!"

"You didn't know your own husband's age?" Jinhee raises a eyebrow. "Did you guys get arranged marriage or something? I thought those things only existed in the dramas and fan fictions." The corner of her mouth lifts in a smile.

Her brutal honestly is really something else.

I shyly look at Leo, unsure of how to respond. He just remains quiet therefore so do I.

"How long will it take?" I ask again.

"A while." she simply replies.

"I'll go to sleep then." I say before drifting off to sleep.
