20. A Good Kind Of Goodbye
The next morning, I felt like a child in Christmas morning. Jinhee's words played around in the head. She had a surprise for me. I don't know what's wrong with me, but before Leo my life was always in a straight line. Nothing new happened. But now every day is like a new day, full of possibilities. And if I get hurt, it's okay. Leo will kiss it better. It feels strange saying that but I truly believed he would.
So when I woke up, I already couldn't wait to see what Jinhee planned for me. Leo sensed my excitement but he just chuckled and shook his head. He didn't question me or judge me, instead he watched me in amusement as I walked around the room back and forth. Which was stupid of me because I don't even know when she's planning to give me the surprise.
"Let's go see Jinhee. I suppose that's why you're walking back and forth?" He asked. I stopped on my track.
"Yes. She said she'd plan a surprise for me." I said nervously.
"You like surprise. So what's wrong?"
"Nothing! I'm just so excited! I don't know what she's going to do. What if it's something embarrassing?"
He laughed. "Come on. You're so transparent, she probably knows what'd make you happy. You'll like it. Don't worry."
"Easier said than done." I mumbled.
"Let's go meet her then."
We went to her room but no body opened the door. My heart sank. She didn't leave already, did she? She couldn't have been lying yesterday? But she looked so genuine. Either she's a really good actress or I'm reading too much into this.
"She's probably out preparing for your surprise." Leo read my mind and said. He nudged me on the shoulder. "Let's go eat. She'll be here soon. We're not leaving until evening."
I nodded and followed him to a restaurant nearby. "Let's have some normal food please. Too much exotic food at once." I said.
He nodded. "Sure."
We ordered French fries and burgers.
"You know..." I started dipping my fries into ketchup. "Your mom didn't call me anymore."
He bit into his burger. "Why would she call you?" He asked casually.
"She used to before." I put a French fry in my mouth. "She was always calling me, telling me to seduce you and stuff."
He started coughing suddenly. Probably shocked."W-What?" He swallowed his food.I smiled. It was fun seeing him all embarrassed.
"Yeah. She wants grandchildren. So she was desperate." I said smirking.
"Aish, seriously." He rolled his eyes, probably scolding his mom in his head. But then his attitude changed. He grabbed a tissue and suddenly loomed over my face. He was sitting opposite to me but he was in front of my face in an instant. I gulped, my mind wondered back to the chocolate incident. But there's so many people here. He's not going to do that again, right? He was close but he didn't do the same thing as before. Instead, he started wiping something off my lips. But I didn't see why he had to be so close to me to do that.
Then he suddenly looked right into my eyes,"Want to make some?" He whispered, smirking with the same mischievous eyes.
Now it was my turn to cough. "W-What?"
He returned to his seat like nothing happened. "You had ketchup on your mouth." He tucked the napkin aside, then continued eating.
I didn't think it'd be comfortable to ask him to elaborate on what he meant by 'what to make some?' because I had some idea what he meant by that and I didn't know what to feel about it.
When we were done, I was getting impatient. I wanted to see Jinhee before leaving. And same goes for Hongbin. I thought he'd be in our room by now, to annoy us but he never came. It was like he disappeared too. When I went to his room, I realized he did. He left too.
I asked the front desk receptionist, and he told me they already checked out. My heart got crushed. They left me. Just like all my other friends did when they were done copying my homework. Or when they told me what a jerk their boyfriends were being to them, they hung up without asking how I was. Yep, just like that, I lost more friends.
"It's okay." Leo assured. "I don't know where they went but I don't think they left you. Even if they did, it'd be their loss." He pulled me closer to his chest. "Let's go back. They'll know where to find us."
I was at a loss of words the entire ride back. I mean, I came to Ubud with 3 people but I only have Leo with me now. And how could they do that to me? At least they should have had the decency to say goodbye.
"Don't cry. Please..." Leo said, and that made me realize that I was crying again. I didn't even notice. I wiped the tears with the back of my hand. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself. Staring out of the window, I tried to drown the sense of betrayal I was feeling.
We arrived at our rented house and I dragged myself out of the car. I followed Leo to the doorstep as he opened the door. We entered the living room- it was exactly as we left it. Suddenly it didn't feel so warm anymore. I was anxious to leave the country all of a sudden. Now that my 'friends' were gone, I had no affection for this place anymore. Leo took the bags and went to the bedroom. I sat down at the backyard garden place, where beach was visible. Somehow I thought watching the waves crashing into the sand would make me feel better. And it did. Its rhythmic movement almost put me in a trance. I said almost because right then I got distracted by a huge thing in the sky and sudden shouting of someone from far away. I couldn't make out what the person was saying but I could see the 'thing' in the sky was a kite. The biggest kite I've seen in my life. The kite was bright red, contrasted perfectly with the blue sky. Sticking out like a thumb. Its tail was long. It probably went three meters long and there was something written on it. I had to stare at it for a minute to realize it was Korean letters. But it was still a bit too far away for me to make out the words.
I immediately turn around and dashed to the bedroom. "Leo! You won't believe-" I was cut off by the sight in front of me. Someone was in our bedroom and had transformed the whole place into a flower shop! Okay I'm exaggerating. But there were flowers everywhere! The entire bed was covered in rose petals. The curtains were changed into silky heavier ones; maroon. There were more than 10 vases of flowers; none which I remembered being there before. Not to mention a bunch of candles- unlit for now- appeared from somewhere and were scattered around the room like some sort of birthday cake. Wait. What am I saying?! I've seen this on Tv hundreds of time!Leo was just there standing, near him was the bags. He was probably as shocked as I was.
He finally turned around and looked at me,
"What the heck is all this?"
I shrugged, "I don't know. But come outside there's something weird outside too."
He followed me to the backyard and I showed him the kite. This time it was much closer and I could make out the words. It said,
'Miha+Leo= #Mio'
My mouth hanged open. I looked at Leo and he mirrored my expression.
"What in the world?" He started but then a shout was heard from the beach.
"HI GUYSSSS! OVER HEREEE!" Without a doubt it was Hongbin. I would never forget his voice, after listening to him talk so much. He and a female figure- later I figured out it was Jinhee- were waving and jumping like crazy. Trying to catch our attention.Leo and I looked at each other for a few seconds before running towards the exit.
By the time we reach them, I was huffing and panting. They were just grinning.
"You like my surprise? Am I not a genius?" It was Jinhee who spoke first.
"What the fuck!" It was me who swore. Causing Leo to flinch and the others to chuckle.
"Yeah sorry. If I had told you beforehand, I wouldn't have got to hear you swear." She said cheekily.
"Its fine and all but what the fuck is a Mio?" Leo sounded annoyed.
Hongbin deadpanned and looked at Jinhee, "Idiot! I told you Leha sounded better!"
"No it didn't! Mio sounds way cuter. Like a cat!"
"No way! What if it's a boy? What kind of name would be Mio?"
"What about Leha then? It sounds equally stupid. Atleast Mio is cute."
They were making no sense so I had to stop them,
"Uh guys, what are you even talking about?"
"Your baby offcourse!" They said in unison.
Uh, what? I couldn't help but blush. I looked at Leo and he was blushing too!
"Uh, wait! The flower thing was you too?"
"Yep." Jinhee beamed. "It was my idea."
"I voted for a sound system but she wouldn't listen to me! Smooth jazz is a must for this kind of thing!" Hongbin complained.
"Uh, no. That's unnecessary! How would you know anyway?"
"Obviously because I had experience!"
"What a joke! Ha ha!"
"I had more experience than you at least!"
"Please! You look like a virgin anyway!"
"Oh yeah! Come to my bed one day I'll show you who's a virgin!"
"Psh, please. I don't sleep with trash!"
How they went from accomplices to be bickering like enemies. I have no idea. Me and Leo kind of just awkwardly stood there as they argued. It was amusing and uncomfortable at the same time. At least they weren't talking about our love life. So that was good. But as expected after a while, their argument died down and after a minute it was all gone and forgotten.
"Sorry." They apologized sheepishly together when they noticed what they were doing.
"So ..." I started. "That was your gift? A huge kite which obviously won't fit in my luggage?"
Jinhee looked like she just realized that fact. "Oh yeah. Shit."
I face palmed. "Sorry." She added.
"Oh well." I dismissed it.
"But!" She said. "I do have some gifts for you to give to your family."
I blinked. "Really?"
Jinhee took us to her car, where her backseat was filled with shopping bags. The boys carried them all as we entered our living room. We sat down and she showed me all the shawls, jewelry, bags and shoes that she bought from Ubud market for me to take home as souvenirs and give to my family and friends. They were all exotic and were touched with local ingredients. They were all beautiful.
"Thank you so much! They're all wonderful!" I complimented her choice as we hugged. The boys talked for a while too. Leo seemed to be also getting used to Hongbin. I think he actually liked having him around. No matter how he acted.
Me and Jinhee talked for a while about the usual things, what I'll do in Korea and what she'll do here. She told me she liked it here and she's not planning on moving to Korea anytime soon. But she promised to keep in touch via skype and visit me when she goes to Korea for visit or something. She told me once again she'd miss me and I said me too.
Hongbin said he would be staying for a few days more so we bid him goodbye as well. But he said he'd contact us when he goes back to Korea. So he could give us discounts every time we go to his restaurants. I asked if we'd get special treatment if we tell his staff we're his friend, he said to definitely do that. I mentally noted that I'd do exactly that.
We drank, ate, talked and laughed again, before it was time to say goodbye. Though this time. It was a good one. I had a feeling I'd see them again soon once I waved at them as their car became smaller and smaller from my view point. I definitely would.
Since dinner was done, we decided to retire to the bedroom. Then I suddenly felt embarrassed as he flowers came into view. I knew what they were trying to do. And I felt grateful for it. But it was way too embarrassing to do it like this. I awkwardly sat at the edge of the bed after we both changed into our sleeping attire.
"You're not coming to sleep?" The bed dipped beside me as Leo laid down.
"Y-yeah." I said laying down as well.
The eerie silence was so uncomfortable I wanted to scream just to break it. I didn't know what we were supposed to now. What does one do in a honeymoon bed exactly? I wanted to kiss him but I didn't have the guts. Then suddenly Leo made the first move. He made me turn towards him sideways and kissed me suddenly. As soon as his lips touched mine, a fire inside of me kindled into a storm. I wanted this. I wanted him. And I was more than ready to take him.
