18. Monkeys and Chocolates
We entered the forest full of energy and enthusiasm, but after walking for a while, I remembered why I hated sports lessons at school. I was panting, tired and my legs were hurting like hell. How long were we even walking? An hour? All I see is trees and trees. Some alike, some different. So far no monkeys in sight. I don't know whether I should be thankful for it though. What puzzled me was how easily Leo, Hongbin and Jinhee was walking. How it that they're not dying and I am? When I felt like my lungs will burst I finally called out,
"Stop!"
Leo was the first to stop because he was beside me, then Jinhee and Hongbin also whirled around from front.
"What is it?" Jinhee inquired.
"I..." I panted. "I'm tired." I said.
"Tired?" Jinhee gave me a look. "It's only been 10 minutes."
My mouth hanged open, "10?! It felt like hours!"
Hongbin started laughing, "Someone has been slacking off in gym."
"I've never been to a gym." I shrugged and he stopped laughing.
"Wow." He looked at me like I'm an alien.
"Let me carry you." Leo suddenly said and throwing me over his shoulder so quickly I screamed in surprise. "
Put me down! Put me down!" I yelled, feeling lightheaded for being upside down so suddenly.
"It's okay, let him. We'll reach there in another 10 minutes. It's not that far." Jinhee said and started moving forward, with the rest of the guys trailing behind her. Including Leo. I don't understand how he could move so effortlessly, especially since he's carrying me- who probably weighted the same as a baby elephant. No matter how I look at it, it was nice of Leo to carry me but it's uncomfortable. My butt is right next to his face and I can't help but feel self-conscious. I don't understand how the girls in fairytale likes being in this position. There was nothing pleasant about being in this position. In fact, I was anxious to get down. After another eternity, we probably reached our destination, judging by how we came to a halt. Not that I can see anything, since I'm upside down and facing the other way!
"You see the stairs and the statue? It leads the way to ..." Jinhee started but I cut her off,"Uhm...can I get down now?" I tapped Leo's shoulders.
"Oh right." He acted like he forgot I was over his shoulder and quickly put me down. How does one forget that?!
"...Yeah, as I was saying before I got rudely interrupted, this path leads to the The Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal ("Padangtegal Great Temple of Death"), also known as the Main Temple. The temple is used for worshiping the god Hyang Widhi in personification of Shiva, the Recycler or Transformer. The temples play an important role in the spiritual life of the local community, and the monkey and its mythology are important in the Balinese art tradition. Sacred areas of the temples are closed to everyone except those willing to pray and wear proper Balinese praying attire. But I guess we won't be going there. We'll just see some stuff and have a picnic in the temple of death! Sounds good?" I was actually getting interested until she mentioned the last part.
"Hurray." Hongbin said dryly. It seemed he's not interested in historical values at all. He's probably here to just tag along and eat. Maybe see some monkeys. And almost on cue he asked,
"Did you lie? Where are the monkeys?"
Jinhee shrugged.
"I don't know. They're usually here. Maybe we're lucky or you're some kind of anti-monkey charm." I stifled a laugh. Hongbin pulled a face.We started moving again and this time Leo was following me behind because the road was getting narrow. At one point I almost fell in surprise because I thought I saw a huge crocodile sized lizard near a tree, but Leo caught me and saved my face. When his arms were around me, it reminded me of the time we cuddled and it sent butterflies in my stomach and my cheeks kept heating up.
"Oh that's just a statue of a komodo dragon." Jinhee said casually.
"Thanks for the warning." I said bitterly.
We kept moving until we came across a small stairway, with a gate. The stairs had two statues in either side. Both naked females...and looked like demons. A warrior? I don't know. It was a bit creepy.Jinhee opened the gate and we entered a huge place filled with temples. The buildings reminded me of our Korean royal places. Low ceiling and the pointy roof. The roof were mainly black (surprise surprise- temple of death and all) but some were different.
"Cool architecture." I heard Leo mutter under his breath.I followed his gaze and hitched my breath. Because before me was a building with so many statues. I wasn't even sure whether it's supposed to be a building or what. It did have three golden doors. The mid-section has stairways leading to the door. The shape was triangular and it had statues (same as the ones in the entrance) everywhere. I might get nightmares tonight.
"Um...I don't know why you thought we'd enjoy being in the temple of death. But can we please get out of here? I'm getting the chills." Hongbin spoke and I internally agreed with him. I would have been fine except the fact that practically no one other than us was around. Not even monkeys.
"Why? You scared?" Jinhee teased.
"No way." Hongbin scoffed.
"I'm hungry." I quickly said, hoping we'd go the park now, (And get out of this place). Historic or not, I'm here on a honeymoon.
"Okay." Jinhee said and led the way once again. We exited the place and came to safer place. It was a park filled with green surface and pleasant weather. It seemed normal enough. And there were people around too. Some sitting and chatting while some were eating.
"Can we sit here?" I pointed at a bench on my right. Jinhee whirled around,
"Are you crazy? You want to eat here?"
I gave her a look, "What do you mean?" I asked.
"That." She pointed at a tree near the place where a couple was eating ice cream out of a tube. At first I didn't see anything but then a bunch of monkeys popped out of nowhere. Screeching and shouting at one another. One of them quickly jumped down and approached the couple. The girl screamed when the monkey snatched the ice cream tube from her hand as the guy tried to shoo it away. The monkey showed them his teeth as it ran back on the tree to his buddies. The whole time I was watching in awe. It was my first time seeing real life monkey robbery. If that's even a thing.
"Wow. Awesome." Hongbin said in amazement.
"Not awesome. If you don't give it what they want, it could bite you. That's not awesome. Sometimes they even steal stuff." Jinhee said gravely. Maybe she had bad experience with these little thieves. Even though they look cute, I wouldn't trust them. Jinhee is right.
"Well, let's go somewhere monkey-free then." Hongbin said.
"That's the problem. They're everywhere." Jinhee said. "Let's go in that corner. Maybe they won't bother us. Maybe." Jinhee sounded unsure. Which didn't give me much assurance.
We sat down at a corner, behind a smaller tree. I don't know if it's supposed to shield us or what, because what's the guarantee that the monkeys won't come to this tree? Even if it's a lot smller than the others. But I stopped caring since I'm not here alone. If something happens I know Leo will protect me. I couldn't help but smile as I mentally pictured Leo in a knight suit fighting a bunch of monkeys with black eye patches.
"You thought my joke was funny, right?!" Hongbin suddenly shouted with hopeful voice as I snapped back to reality.
"Huh?"
"I guess not." His face fell as he continued taking out food from his bag as we sat down on the grassy surface. I looked at Leo for clarification but he just shrugged. I ate a sandwich and some lemonade. Hopefully no monkeys attacked us...so far.
"Here." Jinhee handed me a chocolate bar. I took it. (Hey, who says no to free chocolate?
"What's this for?" I asked.
"No reason. I had an extra." She shrugged.
"Hey! Why not me?" Hongbin complained.
"Because you're a dumbass." She replied casually as Hongbin faked a cry. I think I understand what she's feeling. I feel the same. As the days are getting by, our time to go back to korea is approaching. I felt sad. It's ironic since in the beginning I was dreading to come to this place. Being alone and all. But now I even made genuine friends here and even Leo started caring for me. It felt nice. Like the kind of life I always wanted but never had before.
"I need to pee." Hongbin suddenly said, making jinhee put down her sandwich in annoyance.
"Really? Now?" She said.
"Yes!" he replied, crossing his legs.
"Ugh fine." She got up and started walking away as Hongbin sprinted to catch up to her. I hope there's a toilet or hongbin probably have to do it in the nature. And with so many monkeys around, I don't know if I'd feel safe if I was him.
I bit into my chocolate bar once more. Due to the heat, the bar was melting and a lot of them got on my hands too. I'm trying to eat it as fast as possible but there's only so much I can do at once. As I was struggling with my chocolate, a hand grabbed my chin and turned my face around. I came face to face with Leo's dark brown eyes, which were now sparkling with mischief. The corner of his dusty pink lips twitched as if it wanted to form into a smirk but I didn't get to observe anymore because it came crashing into mine.
It was as if the time itself stopped.
All I could feel was his lips on mine and I was content. He made no attempt to enter my mouth and I was too shocked to kiss back. He didn't see disappointed though. He kept kissing me and even kissed me around my lips, which surprised me a little. I realized I had my eyes open the whole time when he pulled away. I immediately felt like pulling him back saying 'wait! I haven't done anything yet!' but it was too late. Now he was grinning at me like crazy as he watched my shocked- and the flustered expression.
"Um... I- No, I mean, you- No. I meant – Um." He just grinned even more.
"You had chocolate here." He pointed near his lips with his index finger. "I was just helping you clean it up." He winked.
And I died inside.
