Chapter 3
The evening had fallen, and Eason was still lying in bed, his eyes half-open. Lumi had stayed by his side the whole time, her hand wrapped around his wrist. She administered her concoctions regularly, but they brought no miracles.
One moment his heart raced wildly, and the next, it beat calmly. The wheezing sound of his breathing lingered in the air, and his skin was pale and drenched in sweat. It was painful to see him like this, painful to realize that she had caused it.
Eason stared at her, his eyes locked on hers as if bound by some invisible force. He didn't have the strength to look away, nor did he want to.
It was as if an angel sat beside him. He felt the magic flowing through her. He knew she would save him—perhaps from more than just death. She had already rescued him from the businesslike, mundane daily grind that had ensnared him from birth.
His parents ran a successful real estate company, a family tradition that spanned generations. As an only child, all eyes—and expectations for future success—were on him.
That was why he had come here. The island southeast of Ulvink seemed the perfect location for a spa resort, at least according to his parents. He wanted to see it with his own eyes, even if just to escape the city's hustle for a day. Helsinki, he thought with disdain, a hellhole indeed, no more and no less.
Lumi picked up a book from her nightstand. Its emerald-green leather cover, adorned with bronze embellishments, gave it a magical aura. He saw golden, glittering stars drift through the air as she opened it.
The golden glow illuminated her face, highlighting her freckles as though stardust had made her visage its home. She bit thoughtfully on her soft pink lips while flipping through the pages, then whispered strange words that sounded like a magical song.
She drew a blowpipe from beneath her long cape, and he felt the calming beat of his heart quicken into a wild pounding. This was the weapon that had brought him to the brink of death, he realized. But what did she intend to do with it now?
Placing the book back on the nightstand, Lumi stood up carefully. She raised the blowpipe into the air, waving it in flowing patterns that made him realize it was more than just a weapon. As if the northern lights had entered the room, green lights danced in the air.
"Aconitum napellus," she murmured rhythmically, repeating the words louder each time. He felt the world spinning around him, his breathing growing rapid. The wheezing sound of his breath cut through the air, and his heart pounded so wildly he feared it might burst.
She pointed the wand at him, a fiery look in her eyes. A bright green light shot out, this time striking not his stomach but his heart.
Lumi fell silent. Silence enveloped the room. His heart had calmed, his breathing was shallow, slow, soundless. The northern lights that had danced across the room faded, and darkness consumed him.
