Chapter 7

Edit: Enjoyyyy

My lips were pierced tight as I looked at Max in slight agitation. Constant begging for a week straight. He wouldn't leave me alone about having a dinner together.

I tried avoiding him but he showed up at my work, which made things far more difficult. Derek's place at one point. After that, I agreed.

Luckily, I got to choose the place. I eat a California roll as Max nervously looked at me before looking down. "What do you want? You wouldn't leave me alone for days, showed up at my work, and now you're silent." I grumble.

Max looked me in my green eyes then gripped his chopsticks. He didn't respond. I stand up. "Pointless like I thought." I scuff, annoyed as hell.

"Wait." Max called out and I lick my lips before sitting back down.

"If you don't want me to leave, start talking. I really don't want to talk to you right now."

"Look . . . I was . . . I . . . I want . . . I want to apologize to you and I was hoping you'd forgive me." Max said softly.

"Oh yeah, I forgive you." I say and he looked up at me confused. "I'll forgive you for all of the shit you said after I told you how I felt and blaming me for everything. Oh did I forget the punches too?" I snarl out bitterly.

"I know . . . I don't deserve to be forgiven but I should at the very least apologize." I cross my arms and lean back in my chair, listening. "It was wrong of me to keep using you even after you clearly told me your feelings. You didn't deserve to be treated like that and I kept blaming you for everything wrong in my life and marriage. Yeah, the affair was the final straw but we were falling apart . . . I'm sorry." Max said.

With a small nod, I grab my beer and take a small sip. "Ok." I respond nonchalantly.

"I know I'm an asshole for a lot of things but since I'm sorta staying with you at the moment, I thought it would be a good time to apologize. After that fight, I thought about apologizing but I didn't want to look weak so I didn't. Back then, all I had left was my pride." A sigh escaped from him. "No house, no money, just got divorced, and no friends." He looked down. "I guess what I'm trying to say is maybe we can become friends, r-regular friends I mean . . . I don't know . . . I don't want things to continue how they are right now between us." Max finished and looked up at me.

I was in pure shock. I never thought Max would apologize to me even though I clearly need to as well.

"I'm also sorry for using your feelings against you . . . I should've been more considerate when you said you loved me . . . I just dismissed it as you trying to get more sex . . . " Max whispered.

Is he serious?

Why apologize all of a sudden?

"That doesn't matter anymore." I mutter and eat another piece of sushi. I want to let you go . . .

"Yes, it does matter! You deserved this apology for awhile now." Max said quickly and I look at him.

"Are you serious?" I ask in an emotionless tone.

He nodded his head. "I'm serious this time." Max said.

The chances of him being completely sincere are pretty low but then again, he didn't stop trying to talk to me. He knows I'm not having sex with him anymore after that slip up. He also never made an effort to make me feel better until he started crashing at my place. Who knows his reasons?

I look him in his nervous brown eyes. "Why should I believe you?" I ask and let out a short snicker. "Why did I even ask that? Give me a reason to believe you."

Max looked away before nibbling on his lip and speaking finally. "Honestly, I don't have a reason. There's nothing I can tell you to get you to believe me." Silence engulfed us and I drink my beer. He didn't look me in my eyes either.

With a sigh, I said, "I forgive you. Thanks for apologizing."

His brown eyes widen as they looked at me shocked. "Really?" He quizzed hopefully.

I nod my head. "It's been a month. I need to get over it so I'll forgive you." I take a sip of my beer with a small smile.

***

After Max apologized to me, we've became . . . friends I think. It's stupid to think of it like that but we got to know each other and hung out every few nights. To think, we would be able to talk to each other again normally. It didn't happen overnight but after a week or so, it became normal.

I grab two beers, walked over to the couch, and sat down. I hand one to Max then cracked open mine. "South Carolina is gonna win." Max said, leaning forward as his eyes watched the game.

"Like hell they are. North Carolina for sure." I retort, taking a sip of my beer.

"They are trash." Max said and I roll my eyes watching the score and the game.

"You're trash. How could you like South Carolina?" I mutter. Max didn't answer and I didn't care. "Come on. Come on." I start softly, leaning even closer, nearly standing. "Come on- FUCK!" I scream, pissed. Max laughed at me and I slam my beer down on the coffee table. "HE SET IT UP FOR YOU PERFECTLY AND YOU FUMBLE IT!"

With a loud huff, I walk a little pissed off. Max went back to the game. The door bell went off and I groan. Walking over to the door, I open it and the blood from my face rushed out in a spilt second. My eyes were connected with the one person that hates my guts more than anything. Sarah gave me a bitter smile and looked away in anger. "Max." I call out.

"Yeah?"

"Come here."

"Why? They just kicked off-"

"It's Sarah." I said.

Within a second, Max was next to me. "What are you doing here . . . ?" Max asked and she just walked in without another word. Max glanced at me before he followed her as I closed the door. Sarah had her arms crossed as she trembled lightly. Her eyes were burning with hate towards me mostly. I can't blame her. I did ruin their marriage. Max walked closer to her and said, "Did something happen?"

She licked her lips before answering. "Yeah, something did happen. Something really important."

"What is it?"

Sarah bit her lip and soon said, "I'm pregnant."

Max's eyes widened. "H-how long?"

"Just barely over a month. I was going to tell you on Christmas as a present but catching you and him having sex in our bed ruined everything." Tears started to swell in her eyes. "I was so happy and excited to finally . . . Finally be pregnant after years of trying. I cried so much because it finally happened. Because we were going to become parents." She wiped her eyes.

Max stepped closer to her but she stepped back. "T-that's . . . fantastic! Oh, god . . . When's the appointment?"

She glared at him. "Now you want to be a man and be responsible?" She hissed.

"Sarah, I know I messed up but that baby has nothing to do with our relationship. Of course, I'll be in their life. That's my child . . . How could I ever leave them like that?" He whispered.

"Like you left me!" She hissed and he stepped back.

"It's not like that, Sarah."

"It is like that! If you didn't want to be with me anymore, you should've just said so instead of breaking my heart in two. Leaving our child to grow up in a broken house because of you!" Sarah snapped. Her red eyes looked at me.

I honestly didn't care how she felt. Pregnant or not.

"And you Jason . . . I never thought you would do this when you knew we were married." Sarah whispered. I shove my hands in my pockets.

"Well, Max started it and I went along with it." I mutter and they both looked at me shocked. "What? It's the truth. You weren't gonna tell her so someone had to." I respond.

"You pig!" Sarah yelled and slapped Max across his face. Max just took the slap quietly.

"I'm sorry, Sarah." He whispered.

"You weren't sorry for doing this for a year!"

"I know . . . But that doesn't change the fact that there's a baby coming and I'm going to love them with everything in me." Sarah rolled her eyes. Max stepped closer to her and they exchanged soft whispers between each other for a solid five minutes before she stepped back. Her eyes caught mine once more before she quietly left, shutting the door behind her. "Looks like I'm gonna become a father . . . " Max mumbled and looked at me.

I shrug my shoulders. "Your life, not mine." I reply. He grabbed my wrist and I glance at him.

"Jason, I . . . " He trailed off and I sigh.

"Look, I don't care about you having a baby. We aren't dating, and we never were. I don't get why you need my approval on this. Your life, not mine." I repeat in a hard tone. Max looked at me quietly deep in thought. "Max-" He started to come closer and lean in a fraction.

My eyes were darting from his eyes to his lips to his face as a whole. My body was tensing up seeing his eyes locked on my lips. His hand released my wrist and started to travel up my arm before stopping at my elbow. His eyes finally looked away from my lips to my eyes as he stepped even closer. My cheeks felt his breath hit them gently. Sadness filled his eyes as he started to release me completely. "Kiss me." I say in a hoarse whisper, grabbing his arm. I lick my lips and whisper, "Please."

Max leaned in and finally kissed me. I needed to get over him but something about him keeps me wanting more. I ruined their marriage so I could have him . . . But now that I have a chance to get him, I can't bring myself to be with him.

He pulled back slowly before licking his lips. He whispered, "I'm sorry, I couldn't hold-" I grab his face and press my lips on his. A soft moan escaped my throat, kissing him a bit harder. Max kissed back, moving his hands to my waist. I slide my tongue into his mouth, groaning.

Next thing I know, I was being shoved back. Max wasn't looking at me. "I didn't mean to let it go that far. It was supposed to be a simple kiss. Nothing more. Like one for the road." Max explained. I clench my fists and sigh. "Ja-" He stopped talking when I started to reach for his hand.

My fingers grabbed his and slowly slid into his hand, squeezing it tightly. My eyes flicked up to his as they narrowed into a small glare. "We can't do this anymore." I say. Max gulped slowly before nodding his head. "Say it." I order.

His brown looked down at our hands before my eyes again. "We . . . " He licked his lips. "We can't do this anymore."

I let go of his hand and sigh again. "I'm done with this, Max. Get out." I whisper, looking away from him. I should've just done this from the start. This whole game of ring-around-the-rosie with him is over. I'm sick of it.

Max grabbed my chin and forced me to face him. "Then stop coming back to me." Max said before kissing me gently.

I push him back a bit and mutter, "Don't kiss me."

He moved slightly and rested his face next to my ear, pulling me closer. "What if I want to?"

And I knew we were back where we started.
