Chapter 3- The Contraption
"Where am I?" I asked myself as I slowly regained consciousness.
My eyes fluttered open, and I saw nothing but darkness above me. I tried to examine my surroundings. The only thing that I could make out was that I was strapped to a table, and that their was a helmet on my head.
I saw a sliver of light suddenly appear between the door and the wall.
"Who's there?" I asked in a tough tone, even though inside, I was freaking out.
" It's just me, Dr. Rosenberg" she replied. I could tell that she was trying to calm me down.
"What are you going to do to me?" I asked, scared, and I didn't care that it showed through my voice at all.
"Everything is going to be ok" she mumbled. Almost as if she knew that wasn't true, but also didn't want her head driven fifty yards after she unstrapped me from this table.
"I don't believe you" I said. " I don't know what you're going to do to me, but I can already say that I don't like it whatsoever".
"Noel, I promise this is the last test, but again, you have to be calm and completely focused in order to get through this." She replied, as if completely understanding what I was going through.
I took a deep breath. All I needed to do was get through this test, and that was it. Right?
I realized that I hadn't answered her.
"Oh, sorry. Distracted" I mumbled
I heard a squeaking noise as I struggled, which made me look down to see that the table was on wheels, which she used to move me to a different room for the last test.
I saw a huge contraption with wires sprawled everywhere, and a metal seat in the center of it all.
I suddenly realized what the helmet on my head was for.
"Are you going to hook me up to that? Is that the next test?" I asked, fear poking through my voice.
"Yes, but it's not as bad as you think it is." Dr.Rosenberg answered.
"Just have a seat in that chair" she added.
There were a couple of other people in the room. I suspected that they were here to observe and take notes. It seemed like Dr.Rosenberg did not intend to introduce anyone, so I never mentioned it to her. It was as if she was saying to the scientists: you are here to observe and nothing more. If you do anything else, you will be removed from the room.
I sat down on the cold metal seat. They hooked up the wires to the circular outlets in my helmet.
"Now just remember, relax and focus" Dr.Rosenberg advised.
"I'll try" I said, with an unsure tone in my voice.
"You ready?" She asked.
"I'm ready" I replied.
