Ch. 5. A Promise of Protection
Captain James set her away from him, his hands still on her waist. "I have made you my captive, and so I am the only one who can protect you now. Let me protect you the best way I know how." He pointed to the food on the table. "Eat then change your clothes and try to rest. We have a while yet to travel and as soon as you can settle down the better. Keep your dog with you."
James didn't give her a chance to reply again as he quickly left the room. The door closed behind him with a thud.
She sat in the chair. Her eyes never left the door.
She looked at Buddy, "He is good at leaving without letting me say anything!"
Buddy sat at her feet and laid his head in her lap, his eyes watching her as she sat there. She frowned and patted his head.
"Stop laughing at me Buddy! It's not funny." Her stomach growled and she snapped back to herself.
I will eat and maybe then I can think straight. I should look for those clothes too my dress is stiff as a board.
She picked up a small fork and took a bite of the cold baked fish. It was good. She finished off the fish and started on the fruit. Strawberrys, blueberrys, and sliced apples that had a honey glaze. She wondered how she had missed seeing the honey glaze on the fruit it tasted wonderful.
Now that she was full she moved to the small door of the walk in closet. It was a small room. Just big enough to step in turn around and step out. A chest took up the back side of the small room. She opened it and looked inside. There she found cotton shirts and black pants folded neatly and bunched up in the corner of the chest was a plain pale green skirt and small white shirt. The fabric of both items was thick and felt heavy. She pulled them out and shut the chest. She dropped the shirt and skirt on the top and started undressing.
She finally got the dress unbuttoned and wriggled out of the stiff fabric, after several times of hitting her elbows on the walls. She slipped the pale green skirt on, it was a little short stopping mid calf. Showing the top of her shoes. She tried pulling the shirt over her head, but the wire wrapped in her hair made that impossible. She unwound her sandy brown hair from the gold wire, and unbraided it in the process. It fell to her waist in waves.
"Funny I don't remember it being that long." She whispered to herself.
Finally she had the shirt on and was lacing up the front when she heard the door open.
"Miss? It's William I came to see if you are done eating."
William stood by the open door as she walked out of the small closet. Her fingers finishing the ties, at the top of her brests.
Williams eyes widened and he lost all train of thought. She was beautiful. Like a Princess. Her long hair framed her face and body making it look like a veil. He cleared his throat.
She nodded and laid her dress over the back of the chair. "Yes I'm done eating. Are you here to get the tray? Oh and I need to have my dress cleaned?"
William nodded and took a step forward. "You look nice my lady." He bowed his head and walked over to the table. "I will see that your dress gets cleaned, and if you need anything at all I'll be happy to help." He grabbed up the tray of dishes and hung her dress over his arm.
Stormy looked around and put a finger on her chin. "Since you offered could you bring me a broom? Oh and is there anyway you could ask the Captain where I might find a hair brush?"
William looked puzzled. "Y..yes miss I'll see what I can do." With that he bowed again and left the room shutting the door behind him.
Stormy picked up some of the books laying on the floor and set them back on the shelf. Buddy curled up beside the bed and closed his eyes. Walking around the room Stormy picked up books and a pair of candle holders, amazed the cabin was so spacious for how small it was. She sat on the bed and looked at the books in her lap.
They were mostly books of maps and some journals, but what caught her eye was a book of poetry. It was small and thin, but the leather cover and gold inlay was well taken care of. It was kept so clean and neat. She set the other books and the pair of candle holders beside her on the bed so she could look more closely at the book of poetry.
She opened the book and read,
The storm rages with winter chill.
She sits and waits as clouds roll in.
The ground is white and water is ice.
As the sky turns gray, like her eyes of winters mist.
Some call her stubborn, some call her shy.
Yet unlike others who fear the wind.
She finds her wings as the waves bend.
She fears not the storm nor high seas.
It is her home, her place to be.
Her voice like clouds, her body strong as trees.
She waits for her master, her one true love.
He'll give the order to feel her shutter.
The waves will part, her sails will flair.
All who know her know her by name.
The promise of adventure, the promise they made.
He'll treat her with kindness, work through the pain.
He calls her Sea Dreamer.
A sweet gentle name, they promise protection, and love is the same.
For now she waits as the storm rolls in.
For her true lover, the Captain of the wind.
Stormy closed her eyes and hugged the book to her chest. The words echoed in her head as she drifted to sleep.
Her dreams took over in a scary way. They started on the waves, but soon they turned dark. She could feel heat and sparks. She whimpered in her sleep, alone and afraid.
