Chapter 7: Questions and Answers
Yue (Two weeks later)
"Rise and shine, kitty cat," some one shakes my shoulder gently. I raised my head and slowly open my eyes to see Penguin at my side with Bepo holding a tray of breakfast food.
"Morning already?" I get up from my bed I was sleeping in to stretch until a few pops were heard from my back. The mission to nurse up Law was a success. Even though it took two long weeks for him to recover, he's now peacefully sleeping under his bed covers after his fever finally broke at midnight a four nights ago.
"So, how's the captain now?" I take the tray from Bepo and started to eat after sitting down on the floor.
"Well, aside from the complaints of aches and pains that he would get after doing the 'physical therapy' that you put him through, he would like to talk to you in the infirmary office when you get done eating and get cleaned up," Penguin smiles. I internally laugh, for it's true that I made Law do some exercises to get stretched out after being sick for so long. However, we never did talk about the past events when Law got better.
"You can tell the captain that I'll be down there asap," I smile back instead, handing the now empty tray to Bepo.
"How do you even manage to keep your weight down after eating so fast??" Bepo asks.
"That's something a girl can't tell," I replied, only for the polar bear to bow his head in shame and apologizing for asking.
"Welp, we'll leave you to it then," Penguin says before he guides Bepo ouy of my room. As soon as the doors close, I take a shower, put some fresh clothes on (which consists of a black spotted red T-shirt with the jolly roger on front, a girl version of Law's jeans, and shin high black combat boots), place my two katana on my right hip, and started my way to the infirmary office. But come to think of it, I begin to become nervous to talk to Law.
You know what Yue? If Law asks about, just tell him everything to get it over with, I mentally give myself a pep talk. The sooner you do that, the better the day will come.
Law
Tap, tap, tap
"Come in," I call out to the knocker while studying Yue's medical file at my desk. Even I haven't talked to her about it, the scene of discovering her having the Amber Lead Syndrome still played in my mind. Even when I did the idiotic way of trying to drink the memory away with that concussion and injured hand, I only got myself hurt while that still repeats, as well as the scene of Yue yelling at me on what was I afraid of.
"Hey Law," I look up from the file to see Yue taking a seat front of the desk. I put the file away as she adjusts the seat when I take notice of her attire.
"You're looking awfully 'spotty' today," I chuckle out while taking my reading glasses off.
"Hey, don't judge," the teen shoots back. "How's your hand now?" I look down at my left, still wrapped up from me hitting the wall.
"It's getting better every day," I replied with a faint smile. "How are you doing?"
"Still kicking and clawing," she replies with a small smile. However, I can tell that she's nervous about something.
"You do know why I wanted to talk to you in here, do you?" I ask the shifty violet haired sword wielder.
"You probably want to know where I or an ancestral relative really came from to get the Amber Lead Syndrome?" I nodded as a reply. Yue heavily sighs, as if she'd been found out.
"Do you know much about it?" I start to question more. She takes a breath and starts to explain.
"Last I remember from an old book I found back at Hala Island, it originated in a town called Flevance. It was also called White Town due to the people mining a rare metal called Amber Lead that made the town itself turn white.
"However, when the metal became too popular, like wearing it for jewelry and stuff like that, the people themselves started to painfully turn white, thus far gaining the Amber Lead Syndrome. And when the World Government found out, they got the royal family of Flevance out of the country in time, and decided to deceive the world by wiping out the White Town and declaring that the disease was contagious, when in truth the only two ways to catch it is either be exposed to the Amber Lead too much, or inherit it from a parent."
"You seem to have a lot of knowledge about it," I concluded, very surprised to hear all of that from a fifteen year old.
"That's because my dad had it," Yue sadly says. "He died of it when I was six." Now that got my attention as I straighten up in my chair. But Yue raised her head before I could speak.
"Now before I tell you about my past, there's something I want to know though: Why did you freak out in a way that as if the Amber Lead Syndrome personally haunted you when you found out that I had it?" I bow my head in defeat before taking a breath and lifting up to tell the teen the truth.
"Because before I obtained the powers of the Ope Ope No Mi, I was born and raised in Flevance before it was destroyed," I began, shocking Yue completely. "My parents were the best doctors, and they were doing everything in their power to find a cure for Amber Lead Syndrome. But they didn't find one in time to stop the genocide.
"I was ten years old and taking care of my sister Lami when the people of Flevance decided to evacuate. The nun of the local church was escorting my classmates to escape, but I stayed behind to be with my family. When I was caring for my little sister at the hospital that my parents owned, I heard gunshots in another room. Before investigating I told Lami to hide and said that I'll be back. After I was sure that it was safe, I entered the room that I heard the shots fired in, only to find my parents on the floor dead.
"When I was grieving, the shooters heard my cries and started to hunt me down, trying to shoot and kill me in the process. I managed to escape from them, just to find more corpses of innocent people, including my entire class and the nun. And by the time I got back to the hospital," I conclude, facing Yue once more, "it was set aflame with my only sibling in it. And so the only escape route I could find out of Flevance was to hide beneath the bodies. "
"I see now," the teen averts her gaze. "So that's what you were afraid of." I look at Yue with confusion as she then rises from her seat.
"Yue-ya, what--" Before I could even finish my question, the young sword wielder had came around the desk, got me to my feet, and wrapped her arms around my torso, like how. . . How a sibling would comfort another when they're in need of someone to lean on.
"You were now afraid that if I found out after you cured me, I would leave the crew, since besides yourself I'm the only survivor the Amber Lead Syndrome," she whispers softly. "But to be brutally honest, I completely forgot that I inherited the disease. However, even though that you weren't able to save your family and friends, you managed to save me. Otherwise I would've died back on Hala Island. So to make it short," Yue lifts her sky blue, catlike gaze to face my storm grey gaze," I'm grateful that I accepted your offer of being part of your crew. So. . . Thank you, for being not only my captain, but also like an older brother I never had, and saving my life." When Yue finished, the only reply I could do was to hug her back and let the waterworks flow.
"Thank you, Yue," I wept joyfully as the teen rubs my back. "For being my light of hope."
"Anytime, Law-niki," she replies, proving that she does care about me as a younger sister.
