Passing the Mantel
"Captain."
A blurry voice is heard as light begins to fill the screen.
"Captain." The same voice worriedly calls out as a woman speaks up. "He's coming to."
A wet Jacob fills the view as he urgently says, "Captain! Captain!"
Captain Crow gasps for air as he immediately sits up and coughs the water out. Gasp surrounds him. He pants, trying to catch his breath as he looks around with wide eyes. The crew looks at him in concern as he continues to breathe heavily.
Jacob steps back to let him get up, offering support if needed. Captain Crow lets out another cough as he stands up. He wobbly walks towards the railing and looks out to sea, Jacob a few places behind him.
Birds squawk as they leave the horizon, far away. He looks on, an unreadable expression on his face.
Sarah and Jacob share a glance, as the Captain continues to just stare.
Wood freaks, gaining their attention. One of the masts holding a sail was splintered, but still standing.
"Captain, the mizzen's in splinters, and I don't like the main." Sarah speaks up, walking towards him. "She can't fight." Ms.Merino agrees.
Jacob says, "Then we'll come back for the bluster when she can. Repairs shouldn't take to-"
"Set a course for the Three Bridges." Captain Crow interrupts, barely glancing at them. "We're going home." He walks away without another word. The crew watch as he heads towards his quarters.

Below deck the lanterns away and groans of pain are heard. "Right mess, aren't ya?" The medic says to Jacob as he stitches up his wound, while Jacob unwraps his bandages with a groan. "Let's get you fixed up."
"If you know what's good for ya," Mr.Crisp speaks up, "you'll keep clear if the captain." "He was close enough to smell that red devil." Another crew member speaks up. An older crew mate says, "If he can't have the Bluster's hide, he'll have outs, go be sure."
Jacob glances away from the three as coughing fills the air. Many crew mates are injured, keeping to themselves in a melancholy way.
"Why, it's gloomy as the Helgard trenches in here." Jacob says as he jumps off the table, making the medic hurriedly follow after. "We've taken some eight proper monsters on this hunt, and the royals will pay us accordingly." He tries to boost up the crew. "And then we'll come back, and we'll take that red devil."
The cabin boy hesitates before saying, "Can we beat it, Jacob? They say the Bluster moved the very sea." Jacob faces him and jokingly says, "Aye, and it shoots fireballs out of its eyes, the say. It's enough to make your knees wobble." The medic cuts the thread and as he puts his shirt back on.
He walks among them as he continues. "But I ain't afraid, 'cause I'm on the Inevitable with you lot. This ship has taken more of them beasts than any other, and she's got the scars to prove it."
"As do we, Jacob!" The old man says as he pulls down his sleeve to show off the scar on his arm, making everyone laugh.
He turns towards him and says, "Aye. And every hunter's scar is a life saved."
He places a hand on a member with a scar on his neck. "A merchant sailor on their first voyage."
He approaches Mr.Crisp and does the same thing. "A mother." He stands a bit straighter as Jacob leaves.
Next is one with a scar over their eye. "A son."
"All hunters die of the same thing." He addresses the crew again.
"Aye, being a hunter." The lady from the trio says and laughs, others joining.
"That's right." He agrees. "Being so hunter. But every hunter dies a great death." The cabin boy stares in awe, along with the others. "Because every hunter lives a great life!" The other sailors chatter and laugh in agreement. They approach Jacob with happiness.
"Jacob!"
Everyone looks over to see Sarah near the back. "Captain would like a word." They face him as the old man jokingly says, "Speaking of dying a great death." He rolls his eyes good heartedly as the lady joins the jokes. "Nice knowing you, Jacob!" They laugh as he approaches the Captains quarters. "We'll think of you often and fondly." Everyone laughs as he leaves.
He knocks on the door and enters. Captain Crow is facing him as he questions, "You wanted to see me, Captain?" He's behind his desk as he answers, "Sit." Gesturing towards the chair in front of him.
Jacob closes the door and immediately says, "Captain, we'll get the Bluster. We know where it is now, and you will have your revenge." He let out a puff of air as he took his seat, resting an arm on his leg. "I'm...I'm just sorry it wasn't today."
"Jacob," Captain Crow speaks up, "I hate that devil with every fiber in me being, but saving Jim Nicklebones was the right thing to do." He grabs a bottle and pours a cup for each of them. "You steered me right today." He hands him a cup and Jacob looks at him confused. "Well, I'm... I-I'm glad you see it that way."
"So we'll go home, collect our bounty, and repair the ship. And we'll come back for that beast and bring hell upon it." They toast and he takes a sip, Jacob much confused while he watches.
Captain Crow sighs as he places his cup down, and stands up. "And then what?" Jacob stares at him as he continues, walking to a window. "What is to become of the Inevitable after I'm gone?"
Jacob says nothing as Captain Crow sighs, and turns to face him. "Through battle and wear, every beam, block, and spar has been replaced since the day she was launched." He pats Jacob's shoulder as he passes. He stares at a painting of the ship as he continues. "Yet she lives on." His voice goes soft as he says, "It's an eternal thing. But I am not." He sadly looks down as Jacob is still confused.
He opens a little door in his bookshelf and takes out a thick book. He glances at Jacob and softly says, "Come."
He walks over and peers at the book. Captain Crow opens the books and says, "Here is my greatness." He shows off the pages as he says, "My father's before me, and his fathers before him. On the day we take the Red Bluster, I will make me last entry as captain." He turns to his last page, then faces Jacob with a proud smile. "Then it'll be your time."
Jacob looks at him astonished as he continues, "I've known it since the day I pulled you from the sea."
A flashback to when Jacob was first found as Crow's voice floats through. Jacob is passed out on the plank of wood but slowly lifts his head at the shadow of Captain Crow and Sarah covering him. "You'd been out there for days."
Back to the present. "But there was something in you, Jacob. A fire that wouldn't die." Captain Crow gently places a hand on his shoulder. "Then I held you, and I knew. The gates had brought me a son. And that one day, you would be captain if the Inevitable."
Jacob takes in the information, and looks down at the book. He flips the book to a different blank page, gently caressing them with a small smile. He looks back to Captain Crow with a serious face and says, "The day you found me, I swore I would do everything in my power to keep people safe from them demons. If you would grant me this ship, I would accept," he surveys the rooms before returning to face him, "and it would be my honor."
Captain Crow chuckles and they embrace. "My boy." He softly utters. They seperate and he holds him at arms lengths, looking at him proudly. "You're gonna do great things." Jacob nods with a smile.
