Jimmy Hoffa
Jimmy Hoffa
Where is Jimmy Hoffa? This is probably one of the most important mysteries in American culture.
Jimmy Hoffa was the president of the most powerful union in America, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, better known simply as the Teamsters. He was president of this union from 1958 to 1971. He grew the membership to 1.5 million and was a renowned civil rights supporter.
Unfortunately, he became connected to the mob, which is euphemistically called organized crime. Because of this he was convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery and fraud in 1964 and was sentenced to 13 years, but was pardoned by President Nixon, but this didn't work so he served the full sentence. He was released from prison in 1971 but disappeared in 1975.
So, the main question is: what happened to him? This is a question that has not been sufficiently answered after all this time.
Hoffa was released from prison on December 23, 1971 at which time he was given a pension of 1.7 million. The rumor is that his pardon was a deal with Nixon to have the union support his election in 1972. The union did that. Also, it was rumored that the union paid 1 million to Nixon to have Hoffa released. Sounds like normal politic dealing to me.
Hoffa sued to rescind the agreement that he could not participate in the union, but this didn't work. Allegedly, he was involved in union activities, especially in Detroit. Some people claim that Hoffa's attempt to regain control of the union resulted in his demise. That makes sense.
The rumor is that Hoffa was slated to meet with two Mafia bosses, Anthony Giacalone and Anthony Provenzano on July 30, 1975. He was to have met them in a parking lot near the Machus Red Fox Restaurant at 6676 Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Township, a suburb of Detroit. No one saw him after that.
There has been a ton of books and articles written about this sordid affair, but no real evidence of Hoffa's whereabouts have been found. Many sites have been claimed for his final resting place, including the end-zone of Giants stadium in New Jersey.
The FBI has conducted many investigations in an attempt to get an indictment of the Mafia mobsters for Hoffa's murder, but so far nothing has come of it. The FBI believes that Jimmy Hoffa was taken away from the parking lot and shot dead and then entombed in a 55-gallon drum and buried in a garbage dump in New Jersey.
The only thing we know for sure is that Jimmy Hoffa was declared legally dead in 1982. I believe it's safe to say that the mobsters killed Hoffa because he was a liability. His past sins could provide a path for the government to obtain an indictment for illegal union activities, so they took care of the problem as they were prone to do.
There is one past mob boss who claims to know what happened. Moscato, the owner of the New jersey dump had Mafi connections through the Genovesa family. Supposedly, the FBI did try to find the drum holding Hoffa's remains in 1975 and dug for three months to no avail. This report comes from Moscato's brother, Dan Moldea . I'm not sure how good this report is.
