Cell Phone conspiracies
Cell Phone conspiracies
Almost everyone uses a cell phone these days, even the elderly. Many of these phones are of the smart variety, which only came on the scene in 2007 with the introduction of the iPhone, according to Steve Jobs.
There are two main conspiracies: one is that cell phones are frying our brains and the other is that the government is tracking us through them.
I'll cover the last idea first. Some people claim this is the reason that people can obtain free phones and service from the government--the so-called Obama Phone. This plan (Lifeline Assistance) offers a free phone and 500 minutes a month for people on welfare, public assistance, etc. This is real, people, not a scam. This is socialism pure and simple.
It is technically feasible to track any cellular phone and eavesdrop on any conversation. That's a proven fact. Legally, the government agencies are required to obtain a court order to listen to a conversation, but it's a well-known fact that they have done it illegally. It's the way governments work. They don't care about your privacy.
Think of it this way. When you place a call on your cell phone, the cellular system must determine the location of your phone and then link to the phone that you're calling. All phones manufactured now must have GPS. Any phone that's turned on can be traced. That's how they located OJ when he ran in LA.
And, now we find out that the CIA and the FBI are interested in breaking into iPhones using software that takes advantage of a 'back door' in the OS. That's solid proof that they want to spy on us.
What about the idea that cell phones are dangerous to one's health? The answer depends upon whom you want to believe. In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer said that mobile phones posed a possible risk of being carcinogenic. This, of course, created a big scare campaign that the cell phone manufactures vigorously fought against.
The main reason there is a concern is because cellular phones emit radio waves, but these radiations are less than a watt, but it's not what is emitted but rather what is absorbed that matters. Several government agencies have established the safe rate of absorption of this kind of radiation for human subjects. This value varies from 1.8 W/kg (Watts per kilogram) averaged over 1 g of tissue up to 2 W/kg, averaged over a 10 grams of tissue. This refers to the head tissue.
Despite all of this concern no definitive link has been found between cell phone use and cancer, mostly because microwave radiation does not cause DNA damage. This issue has gone back and forth for quite some time and there have been lawsuits against phone manufacturers claiming they caused an individual's cancer. What makes cases like this difficult is the fact that there are many other causes of brain cancer that can't be ignored.
Subsequent to these studies, The World Health Organization has issued advisories about cell phone use, recommending hands-free use and using an external antenna when making calls in a vehicle. This is because the power level goes up when the signal is low.
There are many arguments for and against the idea that cell phones cause cancer. I doubt that any of this will deter people from using their phones. They have become a way of life now, something that we can't do without. Brain cancer concerns aside, people walk around and drive for long periods of time with a phone against their head. That's not going to stop.
There are many sources of radiation in modern life. Wi-Fi signals, microwave ovens, card scanners, e-watches, blue-tooth devices, etc. are everywhere. What risk do they present to us?
