Chapter 8
It had only been a couple of days since the group found Ralph and an injured dragon.
Jack had a panic attack and fought with Ako over whether or not he needed their help and Mimi made a deal Chimur to find the dragon that saved her life. Oidoas walked in on the third morning and announced that the Empress had returned to her palace and he was leaving to speak with her about the situation. "Is she even going to help us?" Ralph asked from his spot on the couch, Hachi holding onto him as if he was going to just disappear into thin air. "That I do not know. But I will try to convince her if she refuses." He replied and grabbed his breakfast before heading out the door. Hachi glared harshly at Chimur when he walked over to hand everyone breakfast. "Hachi what has gotten into you?" Ralph asked quietly as he took the plate from Chimur. He had yet to ask everyone about what the redhead said when be was being held as a slave. The wars. The dragons pretending to be people. He wasn't sure how to go about asking such questioned. They would probably deny it and then wonder if he hit his head or something. "I'm gonna go find a dragon!" Mimi sung as she bounced happily in her chair as Chimur gave her her plate. "What-!?" Jack nearly choked on his water. "I'm going to find a dragon." She repeated slower, figuring that he didn't hear ber the first time. "No." Jack shook his head, "Don't you dare." "You're not the boss of me!" Mimi narrowed her eyes at him. Jack had started to become really short tempered every since they got trapped in whatever world they were in. "I said no, end of discussion." Jack glared back at her. Mimi stood up, "You are not my father! I can do as I please!" She poked him roughly in the chest to get her point across, "Now I don't understand what has happened to you but you need to chill out. You've become so bossy since we got here!" "Dragons are dangerous and you are only going to cause more trouble for everyone if you go searching for a dragon you know nothing about!" Jack stood, shoving Mimi back out of his way and turned to leave the room as all the arguing was making him light headed. Mimi, now very angry, shoved Jack forward "Don't fucking push me!" Jack stumbled and caught himself using a nearby wall. He grit his teeth and turned swiftly, his fist catching Mimi straight in the face. She collapsed to the floor and yelled out in pain. Jack froze in his spot as he watched Ralph rush to Mimi's side, "Jack what the fuck!?" He couldn't believe his brother just punched their best friend. Jack shook in his spot before he raced out of the cabin and fleeing off into the woods.
"Did he just hit me-!" Mimi asked as she looked at Ralph, the shock still lingering. Her right eye was now swollen shut and a bruise had already started to form around her face. "I think so...?" Ralph wasn't sure how to answer her question. He had never seen his brother so upset. He had also never seen him hit a woman before. Ever. He was always telling Ralph to never ever hit a woman no matter what.
Ako, after getting the story from Ralph, hurried off into the nearby forest to find Jack and hopefully calm him down. She searched for him. His scent was strong as it led her to a cliff side where Jack was standing, looking like he was ready to just step off the edge and fall to his death. "Jack?" She called gently as to not frighten him. "Go away." He said sternly, not turning to face her. "Jack I can't do that." She took light steps to get closer to him and he turned around "Take another step and I jump!" He was sobbing. His face was red as he tried to hold back the tears. Ako held up her hands, "I just want to talk." She felt fear crawl up her spine but refused to show him on her face. "Talk about what...?" Jack asked. "The fact that I hit Mimi? The fact that I'm becoming exactly like him!?" "Him?" She questioned. "My father!" Jack took in a deep breath, his body heaving as he sobbed "I don't want to be an abuser like him!" He wiped away his tears with his sleeves. Suddenly Jack's panic attacks and anger issues made sense. Taking him out of his normal life has thrown his control completely out of the window. "You're not an abuser Jack, you're nothing like your father." She tried to reassure him. "You don't know that!! You never met him and don't pretend like you understand what it's like to come home from school and be beaten just because you looked in his direction!!" Jack shouted, his voice was loud but quivered in fear. He took another deep breath and a staggered step back, "I swore when Ralph was born and my father left that I would never become like him! Never raise a hand to anyone and I struck Mimi!" "It was an accident. You were both upset and physically pushed each other." She defended as she took another step forward. "What kind of big brother am I!?" He screeched, grabbing at his hair "I've lied to my brother for some many years!" It was unclear of what Jack was upset about now, how much pent up rage was in his body? Pent up sadness? Was it too much for him? Is that why he was standing here on the ledge? "Have you never been able to express yourself?" She muttered softly as Jack took a breath and just hung his head low. Should he answer her? Should he explain that he had been living a lie his whole life and that he had barely hung on this long? Should he tell her that this wasn't the first time he tried to take his own life? "I can't. There's too much to explain and not enough time." He turned back to the cliff.
"There's plenty of time." Ako tried not to sound worried. "Could you at least tell Mimi that I am sorry for hitting her and that I love Ralph with all I have." With those last words that escaped his mouth Jack stepped off the cliff.
"JACK!!!" Ako screeched and raced to the edge, launching off and diving straight towards him. Jack watched in fear as the woman that jumped off the cliff suddenly sprouted wings from her body that went from a tiny woman to a large dragon that had shiny blue scales with pink highlights on her sides. She grabbed him from his free fall of death and just hovered in the air "Why would you do that!" Instead of answering her question, Jack stared in awe "...Y-you're a dragon...?" Ako realized her mistake but tried to shrug it off "I had no choice! I was not about to let you die. You're like a son to me Jack, I can't lose you." Tears welled up in her blue eyes as she looked down at the boy in her claws. Jack closed his eyes as the shock hit him. He had tried to take his life again. Ako was actually a dragon and just saved him. Ako sensing that Jack was struggling with his brain, she slowly flew up to the cliff and through the forest to a small cave near a mountain. She laid Jack down gently and stood, "Here. You can explain everything and in exchange I will answer any question you have."
