Chapter 3- Classes
We wandered through the maze of a school for what felt like hours while the twins and I kept up a friendly conversation, they explained a basic Japanese school day to me, and I asked questions on what was basic courtesy. It's not like I hadn't researched this myself, but I really just wanted to be sure that I was doing the right thing in different situations, and you can only trust Google so much.
I could tell that they wanted to ask me questions as well, but finally, we reached my classroom. I turned to them and bowed, "Arigato, I may not have made it to my class without you!"
They grinned and nodded, "No problem, just remember to come to the music room at break, do you have the symbol we showed you?" They asked with a grin and I nodded.
They were about to walk away before I realized how easy it would be to get lost on my way there, "Wait! This might be way too forward of me, but could I get one of your phone numbers, just in case I get lost? I think I've already proven that I have a horrible sense of direction." I dipped my head and sent them my best puppy dog eyes, pleading for help.
"Do you see that Hikaru, she's almost as good as Tamaki at giving that look."
"Yeah, that can't be good, maybe we shouldn't introduce them." Hikaru muttered back, and they shook their heads together, quietly discussing something, "Yeah, we can give you our numbers; though I think you have to other members of our club in your class that you could ask, Haninozuka Mitsukuni and Morinozuka Takashi. You'll be able to see them easily, Mori-senpai will be the tallest person in your class, and he'll be with Honey-senpai, the shortest person, they're a strange group."
We exchanged numbers and I bowed to them again before turning and walking into my first class, which thank heavens, was English. The teacher wasn't in the room quite yet, so I looked around awkwardly and took a seat as far to the back that I could. I normally tried to grab seats that were closer to the middle, you were less noticeable that way, but it seemed like people had already formed their cliques, so I just went for the least intrusive place.
Finally, the teacher walked in and went to the front of the room, "Kurasu no gakusei e yōkoso, kyō wa atarashī gakusei ga iru yōdesu (Welcome to class students, today there seems to be a new student). Miss Parrik, could you please come to the front of the classroom?" I flinched and stood quickly, not wanting to do anything, but in this situation, I didn't really have a choice. It was official, I really didn't like this situation. In my haste to not make a scene, I tripped over the leg of a chair and toppled face first towards the ground.
It was like I was falling in slow motion, the whole time I was cussing myself out for being such a klutzy idiot, while at the same time trying to catch myself as I fell. I would have hit the ground hard and started off my time in Japan with a face full of bruises, if it weren't for the quick reflexes of the one sitting in the chair I tripped over. A strong arm slipped around my waist, stopping me when I was nearly parallel with the ground; I, of course, clung to the arm like my life depended on it and hastily stood up.
I quickly bowed to the person who caught me and then walked to the front with an alarmingly red face, "Brilliantly done, Jessica, absolutely brilliant. That sure was one heck of a first impression." I made it to the front and bowed to the teacher, "I'm sorry for the distraction ma'am."
"Your perfectly alright Miss Parrik, the chairman informed me of your situation, please feel free to record our lessons, because the majority of them will be done in Japanese for the rest of the students. I expect nothing but the best from you. Would you introduce yourself to the class?"
I nodded and turned to face the class, "I am Jessica Parrik, it is nice to meet you." I had no idea if that is what I was supposed to say, but I went with it.
"Thank you, Miss Parrik, would you please go sit back down, and do try to be more careful this time." The blush that had just barely been receding burst back onto my face and I walked back to my seat, doing my best to ignore everyone as I buried my face in my hands and just listened as the teacher started the lesson.

Classes were really hard for me to get used to, and several times I had to stop myself from getting up to walk to my next class, not to mention that I could only understand every couple of words that the teacher said for the most part. Thankfully, I was in English and classic English literature, both of which were understandable. I clung to my copy of The Lord of the Flies, which I had decided to read for our first project, and stood to walk to the music room because it was finally break.
"Okay Jess, you can do this, just go to the music room, you can do this." I muttered and started walking; sadly, I stopped quickly when I realized that I couldn't remember the symbols the twins told me about, "Well heck. This is just great." I groaned and thought about my options, I suppose that I could always talk to the students they told me about; Mitsukuni and Takashi.
Before I could search and hopefully find them, I realized that someone was calling out to me, "Kon'nichiwa? Anata wa atarashī gakuseide wa arimasen ka?" (Hello? Are you not the new student?) I turned and saw that the person who was taking to me was a really short blond kid with huge eyes and a sweet smile on his face looking up at me curiously. Behind him stood the first person I had seen in Japan that was taller than me; he had spikey black hair, and black eyes that were staring at me almost emotionlessly, but there seemed to be a hint of warmth to them.
There was something about him that was super familiar, I was trying to remember it when my cheeks got red rather quickly, he was the person who had caught me when I tripped earlier. I smiled and bowed as quickly as I could, "Hello, I'm Jessica Parrik, thank you for catching me earlier, I probably would have died from embarrassment if you hadn't." I said to him softly and only received a nod in reply; I turned to the smaller one, "Hello, I'm sorry, but I only vaguely know what you said to me earlier, but yes I am the new student. Are you guys by chance Mitsukuni Haninozuka and Takashi Morinozuka?" The brief description that the twins gave me seemed to point to them, so I took a guess and hoped for the best.
"Yeah! How did you know, Jessie-chan?" The boy practically bounced in his spot as he grabbed my arm and shook it.
"Oh, I talked to the Hitachiin twins earlier, they said that you guys could show me to music room three during break; I get lost easily, and I didn't want to just not show up when they are expecting me. Would you guys by chance be able to take me?" I smiled and then took a deep breath, talking to new people was never a strength of mine, and I knew that if I let myself, I would start rambling like there was no tomorrow.
"You talked to the twins? Well, I guess you can come with us then, we were just heading over to the club room right now." I smiled slightly and nodded, thanking my lucky stars that they were here to help me.
"Oh, what kind of club is this? They wouldn't tell me." I asked hesitantly and both of my escorts stopped.
"They wouldn't?" Honey asked and a small flash of uncertainty crossed his face, "Well, I guess it wouldn't be nice for me to ruin the surprise, but I guess you'll find out soon enough!" The cutesy look came back to his face, and I cocked my eyebrow at him, that didn't help my anxiety at all...
I followed along quietly behind them as I listened to Mitsukuni talk to Takashi, who mostly just nodded or grunted in reply. I had always enjoyed watching people to try and learn about them, so this was fascinating, and despite my lack of socializing, it didn't feel awkward at all, which was really nice. However, as I watched, I saw something almost fake about the way that Mitsukuni acted; don't get me wrong, I could tell that he was a genuinely happy and bubbly person, but certain looks and moments made me think that he was trying to put on a façade. Was he trying to compensate for being short? It was a possibility, I mean, he was over a foot shorter than me, I had only been watching for a couple of minutes while we walked though, so I really had no clue.
I was so busy watching Mitsukuni that I didn't even notice that we had come to a stop; believe me, I know how creepy that sounded. "Jessi-chan, we're here! Should we go in and meet everyone else?" Mitsukuni asked and I nodded nervously, doing my best to hide behind Takashi as they opened the door; to my complete and utter surprise, when the door opened, a cloud of rose petals flew out and I just stood there like an idiot, trying to figure out what just happened.
I heard someone taking to me, but I too busy trying to figure out how what happened, happened. I was staring at the ceiling and I frowned at it thoughtfully while pushing my glasses up, "it's obvious that there are two sets of vents up there, if I had to guess, I would say that the rose petals come out of one, while the second one is a fan that blows the petals down in an artistic manner. That nob looking thing looks like a sensor, I'm betting that it's a motion sensor, trained on the door, which is programed to activate both vents when it senses the door opening."
I was about to continue, but my musings were interrupted by a hand being placed on my shoulder, "I'm impressed, Ms. Parrik, you seem to have a secure grasp on electrical contraptions." I looked over and saw a boy, a little bit shorter than me, with dark hair and frameless glasses, who had a shrewd look about him.
"Um, thank you, my Dad's an engineer..." There was silence for a few seconds until what he said sunk in, "Wait a second, how do you know what my name is?" I asked with both wariness and astonishment in my tone.
The look he gave me was nothing short of condescending, "Really, did it not occur to you that I simply looked at your files, and that gave me an answer?"
"No, it didn't" I said with an overly sweet voice, "Where I'm from, looking at the personal files of another student is illegal, so I was giving you the benefit of the doubt before considering you a petty stalker." Silence lapsed between us and we just sat there glaring at each other.
One of the twins whistled when I said this, "Ooohhh, she just burned Kyoya; should we be running for cover?"
They looked at each other and the other murmured back, "Too bad Risa isn't here, she always has a way of getting him to stop."
I saw the others nod out of the corner of my eye and it wasn't until a blond-haired, purple eyed guy approached us with a white rose. My antagonist just rolled his eyes and walked away muttering something under his breath, I doubt it was flattering.
"Harō watashi no utsukushī bara, anata wa kyō anata no sonzai o watashitachi ni shukufuku shimashita. Dōshite kyō koko ni kimashita ka, hime? (Hello, my beautiful rose, you have blessed us with your presence this day. Why did you come here today, princess?)" He may have said this to me with the utmost sincerity but I could practically feel the waves of sappiness rolling off him.
I looked at him blankly, and looked around, everyone looked as though this was a normal occurrence. I cleared my throat and said "I have no clue what you just said, and you know what? I'm okay with that; would someone please explain to me what is going on."
