F O U R

Our food-shopping went smoothly enough. No one seemed to notice my identity, which is good, and no one in this town seemed to care that we were wanted outlaws.

After we left with our supplies and food, we had a nice, hearty meal that we all definitely enjoyed. The boys earned it.

A few hours later, we were walking into the saloon... And Emerald was already fishing a wad of cash from his pocket.

"Whoa, whoa. What do you think you're going to do with all that money, Em?" Amarillo asked.

"Isn't it obvious?" Cerulean answered. "He's going to that table so he can gamble it all away in poker."

"You betcha," Emerald finished with his signature grin.

"Fine," I intervened. "Use your money as you like, Emerald."

What? I'm not being a bad influence. If he loses all of it, he'll learn his lesson, and if he wins big, well, that's not bad either, is it?

"Just don't cheat," I warned him in a low voice, knowing Emerald's tendency for mischief. "No aces up the sleeve, Em. They could kill you for those kind of shenanigans."

He smiled again. "Who's to say I cheated?"

I scowled. "Don't."

"Okay, then. I won't." He sighed and left us all to go play.

"What are you guys going to do?" I asked the rest of the boys.

Amarillo raised his hand and Cerulean smacked it down.

Cerulean instead said with a smirk, "I'm going to go watch Emerald."

"Me too," added Tangerine.

"I'll probably go dance or something," Indigo said.

"No drinking, right?" I asked him.

"No."

"No smoking?"

"Nope."

"Alright."

Amarillo finally said, "I think I'll get something to drink."

I nodded. "Count me in."

We walked to the bar and sat on neighboring stools that groaned with our weight. Amarillo asked the bartender for a beer and looked at me.

"Uh, I'll just take a water."

I don't drink much myself. Trust me, it doesn't lead to good things.

Amarillo joked, "I guess all that beer has given me this here belly!"

I laughed, but it sounded a bit forced. I've never really liked it when Amarillo jokes about his weight, but I guess it's not my problem.

I decided to look around while the bartender got our drinks.

Indigo wasn't really dancing. It was more like he was just hanging around the dance floor, listening to the music.

A loud "Ohhhhh!" erupted from the poker table as all the men shouted in unison. I looked over to Emerald's smirk and knew that he had won something.

My eyes flicked back to the dance floor. There were only a few women there, and most of the ones that were looked like they were... No, they couldn't be... Oh God, they were.

Yikes.

Women like that, in my opinion, are a disgrace to ladies everywhere. But then again, that's coming from a woman who is the very picture of disgrace.

I pulled my handkerchief further over my mouth and continued to scan the dance floor as the current song ended. A man around Tangerine's age was talking to the live musicians, probably requesting the next song; a woman on the other side of the dance floor looked like she was trying to seduce a man leaning on the wall; another man - no, a boy, as he seemed closer to Indigo's age - milled about the guests, making small talk.

But as I continued to look around, my eyes stopped on a man who was staring right at me. I was startled, of course. I had never seen him before, yet he didn't break his gaze.

"A beer and a water," interrupted the bartender, sliding our drinks over the counter. "Anything else?"

"Not for now," Amarillo replied with a wink.

I absentmindedly sipped my water, keeping my eyes on the mystery man. He was quite handsome, actually. Oh, forget that, he was ravenous. With his slight build and vibrant green eyes, I was captivated. I tried to keep my mind on the fact that I had no idea who he was or why he was looking at me, but it was difficult.

"Something up, Scarlett?" Amarillo asked, derailing my train of thought.

"You see that man over there?"

"Where?"

My lip twitched. "Look at the dance floor. The one that's staring right at me."

"Whoa, yeah. Why's he doing that? Do you know him?"

I restrained myself from facepalming. "No, Amarillo. If I knew why he was staring at me, I wouldn't have brought it up. And I've never seen him before in my life!"

Amarillo shrugged. "That probably doesn't mean anything. You certainly stand out in a crowd with those lovely rubies-"

I cut him off as it finally dawned on me, my eyes widening. "He must recognize us. He knows we're outlaws. Oh no, he might be one of Pinkerton's detectives!" My voice was flooded with dread.

"Okay, Scarlett, calm down. We don't know that for sure," Amarillo replied.

"Amarillo, this is bad. We have to get out of here before he calls us out."

"What? No. We can't leave now. The boys are finally having some fun, right?"

I took a deep breath to steady my swaying nerves. "You're right, Amarillo. We'll stay. Just don't make eye contact with him."

I looked down at my water and Amarillo took that as his cue that the conversation was over.

We sat in the same awkward silence for the rest of the night.
