Sixteen
I was sharping my blade. I needed to keep it sharp. I can hear the dragons' snores. I can hear everyone's snores.
"Shouldn't you be in bed?" I ask.
"Needed to clear my head." Hiccup answered.
I hear him sit beside me. His heartbeat was slow.
"You want to ask me something?" I ask.
"Uh... no." Hiccup said.
"You're lying." I say.
"Were you ever afraid?"
"Explain."
"I mean going to war. Was it scary?"
I let out a breath.
"It felt like it was my last day. I was wrong. It was the last day for the others."
Zephyr and Nuffink walked over to me. I hear their hands reach.
"We made you a present." Zephyr said.
"It was her idea, I just finest it more." Nuffink said.
I smelled it. I hear Hiccup's breath. It was cheerful. I took it. I ran my fingers through it. It was a branch rolled into a circle. I felt something golden on one end. It felt like a bell. I'm not sure they get my eyes were literally burned closed by a dragon.
"It's a bracelet." Nuffink said.
"Thanks." I say.
I stood up.
"Way to go kids." Hiccup said.
I walked out of the room.
"Aw, he didn't like it." Zephyr said.
"I told you we shouldn't have done a bracelet. He's blind." Nuffink said.
"I'm sure he loved it." Hiccup said.
I knew they would question why I left, but I actually had a present for them. I took it off the shelf. I walked into the room with the two wrapped gifts. I gave it to the children. I hear them open it.
"Cool golden daggers!" They said.
I hear them run over to me. I feel their arms wrapping around me. It's almost enough to forget what is about to come. Well, I wouldn't forget. I hear his roar. It shook the house. I can hear the children shiver.
"What was that?" Astrid asked coming down the stairs.
"He has come. And judging by the roars and smells. He's brought an army. A bigger one than ever before." I say.
