10. Expect the unexpected

NOTES: Hi Guys!

First of all, thanks for ur comments and reviews, I read them all ^^ It helps me getting inspired to write more and more.

Someone requested to translate my stories to German, and I said yes. I used to do it when I was studying all by myself and as long as credit is given, I think is ok, it also help the stories to reach more people that maybe don't know english.

I hope you like this chapter.

Enjoy.

He was really nervous.

It wasn't like he was never in a date before, but this time around was different. He never expected all of that to happen, but it did.

It was right after their last huge team up, they sat down to talk about life and something took over him, making him ask her out. Just like that. He remembered she smiled at him, he was sure she thought it was a joke or something, but then she nodded with her head, saying "sure, why not?" and since then, he has been freaking out over it. They tried going out a couple of times after that, but something was always happening: an attack in the city, the Wave Rider crashing downtown, some creature from hell coming after Sara for revenge, Grodd showing up and wanting Barry's help to win over a gorilla he fell in love with – that was something, he thought. The world seemed to finally let them have a minute of peace, so they took advantage of that.

He walked towards an empty table on Jitters, waiting for her as he tried to forget about his nervousness. He saw her coming in and smiled, waving at her. She looked more beautiful than usual with her black tank top and dark jeans.

- Hey! – She smiled as she greeted him and sat down – I forget sometimes how cozy this place is

- Is awesome. – He said

- Sorry I'm a bit late; I had to do a favor to my mom while I'm in town...

- Is ok, I'm always late to anything so...

- But... You have super speed...

- I know... It confuses me as well– He laughed, making her laugh too.

They spent some time talking about life, their jobs, teams and Barry could feel like they were really having a good time. Life was always crazy and moments like the one he was having now was rare.

- So... - Barry started, already blushing, something that Sara thought it was cute.

- So...

- I'm sorry it's just that... I' really glad we could finally have a moment of peace to just enjoy the night...

- Yeah, that's rare, right? – She laughed – I'm glad too... It's actually the first time in a long time that I just go out and chat, and have drinks... Don't worry, I'm nervous too...

- I'm... not, I mean... - He looked guilty as her and laughed, there was no point in pretending, Sara was good at reading people – Ok, I am...a bit...

- I think is cute – She said while drinking a sip of her beer

Barry and Sara kept talking for a while when Barry stared at the door and saw someone come in. Nyssa Al Ghul walked towards them with a threatening look in her eyes and a knowing smile on her lips. Barry remembered her when he helped Oliver in Nanda Parbat, he also remembered not liking that place at all, except for that weird pool, and it looked like a hot tub. Then he learned what it really was, and decided he also didn't like it that much.

- Beloved... - Nyssa said as Sara looked surprised at her

- Nyssa? What are you doing here? – Sara said as Nyssa approached her. Sara stood up and awkwardly hugged her. It looked like she had lost her balance for a second, as Barry noticed.

- I was just around, came in for a coffee and saw you two sitting here... thought of saying hi.

- Hi – Barry waved a bit shy as she sat with them.

They talked for a while, and Sara looked off balance all the time. It was just like something had knocked her out and she was having a hard time getting up. They talked about a few things from their past, and he could see a glimpse of sparks in Sara's eyes. Barry knew about it because Sara opened up to him once, about how she felt while she was in the League and how it represented a dark part of her life that she wished she could forget sometimes. He knew her Canary days brought pain and bad memories to her, but told her it helped shape who she was, so it was a part of her history that even if it was dark, it was important. She used to say the only good part of it was Nyssa and how she helped her go through her darkest days and how painful it was for her to leave.

Sara excused herself to the bathroom, leaving in a rush and Nyssa stared at Barry.

- What are you doing? – She asked

- Thinking about stuff...

- No, I mean here... With Sara?

- Oh... we were on a date, sort of... talking...

- That's nice. My beloved deserves the best... I hope you're it.

- I... - Nyssa was really intimidating; Barry was suddenly feeling the need for some air.

Nyssa stared seriously at him.

- Otherwise I will have to make you pay... League style

- I know you two have history

- Deep history – She crossed her arms

- But I... I would never...

Nyssa burst out laughing. She could notice Barry was nervous, it was funny.

- I'm just messing with you. – She stared at him, knowing she had just learned how to make him want to run away fast if she wanted to – You have a good spirit Barry Allen. I just hope it's enough for my beloved. Sara lived in darkness way too long, I was there to catch her if she fell... Will you be there too?

Barry thought about what Nyssa was telling him. He knew she was a good person, he also knew she was deadly and that she was really protective of Sara. He knew she still had pure love for her and knew that she was left hurting when Sara left the League. A love like this is hard to forget. Especially like this, he was aware he just got to know her and they were just hanging out, sharing stuff from their lives to one another, it was not that deep... Yet. But he knew for sure that he was willing to seek deep and find out stuff together. He knew Nyssa meant a lot for Sara and that that Sara meant a lot for Nyssa, but he decided that yes, he would be there if she needed him. He thought about how it was foolish of him to let Nyssa intimidate him, even if she was a deadly assassin.

- I will be honest with you. I don't know what is happening, if this is heading somewhere, we are figuring things out, getting to know each other, but if Sara ever needed, I would be there... But the thing is, she doesn't. I have super speed and even if I tried to use it to catch her if she fell, she would have already gotten up, because she's a badass like that. Maybe with you she needed protection, she needed to be rescued, and I'm glad you did, I'm glad you helped her when she needed the most. But she's not that person anymore, she got stronger and she can take care of herself. I actually would be there to take care of her heart, so she wouldn't have the need to do it all by herself.

Nyssa nodded with her head, looking serious at Barry. That was something she wasn't expecting to hear. She also noticed a change in his posture. She got up and smiled at him.

- Good answer, Barry. Tell Sara I had to leave.

- I'm right here, you can tell me – Sara said as she stood behind Nyssa.

Sara had a serious look on her face. Something was making her feel something, Barry knew it. Nyssa said her goodbyes and left. Sara and Barry paid for their drinks and left, walking side by side, in silence.

- Are you ok? – Barry asked, noticing something was off.

- Yes, it's just that... I wasn't expecting to see Nyssa here...

Barry kept quiet and Sara stared at him. She felt a mix of feelings inside of her and couldn't help but think Barry was feeling uncomfortable since Nyssa showed up.

- Are you ok? - She asked him – You have been weirdly quiet since she showed up.

- I just didn't want to get in the middle of that... you two were talking, remembering great moments you had together...

- Is not like that...

- I didn't say anything...

- I know this look.

- I'm not the one you should be worried about now... I'm ok.

- What do you mean?

They stopped walking and Barry turned to face Sara. He knew she would probably not like his answer, but he would give it to her anyways.

- When you saw Nyssa, you face changed... You changed. You were just... I don't know how to explain it, but it looked like you were in shock and had no idea what to do. That's why I asked if you were ok, because it clearly did something to you.

- Well, it did...

- And it's ok... I would understand... we're just getting to know each other...

Sara looked down and thought for a while. That was something she was sure Barry couldn't understand. She looked at him and smiled to herself.

- Is not like that, Barry. Even jealous you're cute by the way... But is not like that.

- What? I'm not....

- Barry, please, I'm not stupid.

Barry took a deep breath. He wasn't sure about what he felt, was he jealous? He was not happy that Nyssa showed up at their date, for sure, but that wasn't jealousy... He would feel like that with anyone. At least that's what he thought. He was sure he wasn't jealous. He was just worried about Sara, he knew they had a huge history together, and there were a lot of feelings involved.

Yes, you keep telling yourself that, he thought.

- I was just worried... you didn't seem fine when Nyssa showed up; I don't want to get in the middle of anything...

- This is not about if I still have feelings for her. Yes, she'll always have a special place in my heart, but... This is about the fact that she was the first person I felt something strong for after Ollie and... when it happened, I was an assassin. I was surrounded by darkness. I was a shitty person before; I betrayed my sister's trust. I don't know if I know how to be a good person being in love with someone. And seeing Nyssa brought it all back. And I don't like feeling like that!

Sara turned around and left Jitters, trying to fight back the tears. Barry felt horrible and went after her. He didn't want to leave things like that, and he didn't want Sara to feel like she was a horrible person. He reached her in the street.

- Sara, wait.

- What?

- You're not a shitty person; you just made a mistake, like all of us. And I'm sorry if what I said came out wrong. – He said, feeling nervous again – And maybe I was a bit jealous, Nyssa's a badass and intimidating... and I know you two have history together...

- So you were jealous... – Sara said as she took a few steps towards Barry, standing just a few inches away from him. – Listen... I'm not good at this. At all. Maybe a part of me will always love Nyssa, like I've said; she'll always have a place in my heart. She saved me, helped me, and gave me a place to live when I thought I was going to die in the sea. But that has nothing to do with...us. She just reminded me that I don't know how to do this, that I don't know if I can do this. I've done a lot of bad things, I don't know if I can be with someone... I...

- Hey, don't say that! – Barry said as his hand reached for her face. – Listen, I think you misunderstood me... When I told you I would understand, and that you two had history together and I didn't want to get in the middle of anything, I was really talking about me. I understand what Nyssa means to you. And she's such a badass, I didn't know if I could top that. You're worried that you might not be worthy of having someone in your life but I was actually the one thinking that.

- And why would you ever think that?

- Because you hit rock bottom and got up, overcame it all, you had strength to turn the table and be your own person. And now you're the captain of a time ship. You're a leader of a team of heroes. You inspire a lot of people. You inspire me.

- I've heard what you told Nyssa... - Sara said as she looked at him, trying to fight tears once again. – No one ever said those things about me before...

- Is the truth! – His lips touched hers as he guided a slow but passionate kiss. Sara responded to him the same way for a while, deepening a bit more – I don't know where this is going... But if you want to, I'm willing to find out. I just want you to know that you deserve happiness.

Sara smiled at him, finally giving up on fighting tears. She had no idea Barry felt that way and thought all of that about her. She was surprised to know why he was jealous of Nyssa and couldn't believe he would actually feel like he could never top what Nyssa ever did to her. Just by saying what he said to her inside Jitters, he had done it.

Barry kissed her one more time, strongly holding her by the waist, using his super speed to bring her to an empty corner of the street. He held her strongly against his body while kissing her, her back resting against the wall as she deeply kissed him back.

- Well... - She said, resting her forehead on his, taking a few breaths – I definitely need to make you jealous more often.

- Funny... Really funny – He said kissing her once again.

NOTES:

Spoiler Alert: Prompts by WritersBlock039: 1 Got room for a third? 😂 How about one where Nora is actually Barry and Sara's daughter, and she's come back from the future to make sure her parents get together? (If you somehow add Kariver to this, too, that would be absolute gold.) 2 OK, I swear this is the last one (until the next one is posted, probably 😂) All of Team Flash are trying to make sense of Nora's arrival, who is being very shifty, when someone else arrives at the door. Barry is shocked to see Sara barely holding herself together and asking to talk to him - immediately. He's about to say no when he sees how devastated he is and lets her in. When they talk privately, Sara tells Barry what happened in StarCity - Oliver's arrest and her dad dying. They bond over what it feels like their last family member dies (Dinah Lance has been extremely scarce), and Sara apologizes to Barry for what she told him during "Invasion!" Barry brushes it off and tells her she understands now, and that's enough. When they go back out, Sara asks who Nora is, and she drops the bomb that she's their daughter. I just seem to like playing with ideas that involve Nora being Barry and Sara's daughter, apparently. – I put those 2 prompts together and changed Nora's name.
