We Try Out Protesting
There was a momentous celebration of sandwiches after Tui an I rejoined the crew. I would like to say we were carried to our victory meal over the shoulders of our comrades, but as a large crowd of weird looking teens we decided against the mode of transportation. Of course I was pushed aside slightly as I munch on my BLT, due to the fact I couldn't really help the smarter kids figure out whatever information we had just stolen.
"Shouldn't you be helping them?" I asked Chespin, who was sitting with me at the loser's table at the sand which shop we were currently seated at.
He shrugged. "I wanna play Minecraft right now, you guys are boring."
I was amused. Despite being a genius Chespin didn't really act mature beyond wearing expensive clothing and liking it.
At least I could enjoy his presence. Justin, Will, Sabine, and Theo along with Mr. Wales were gathered around a computer chatting quietly over the pictures we had taken. Tui and Genny were gossiping loudly over their food, acting like normal teenagers. I had Chespin with me so I didn't look completely alone.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked up to see Azmus looking on me expectantly. "Hey."
"Hey man." I replied, growing even more thankful as he sat down beside me.
I was confused because it was only him, and this morning he had left to hang out with Dylan and Icie. Only I didn't see Dylan and Icie.
"Are you going to eat the other half of that?" He asked. "I'm starving."
I pushed it over towards him, the mission had made me loose my appetite. It was a pretty good sandwich though.
"Where are the other two?" I asked, still looking around.
Azmus grinned. "Don't tell Mr. Wales, but they're on a date."
My eyes widened. "Wait..."
Azmus nodded smugly. "They don't think it's a date, but it totally is. I mean look at this picture Icie just sent me."
He opened up his phone and showed me a picture of Icie grinning widely as she leaned over the edge of a very high building, Dylan's face was in the corner, he looked concerned but was obviously having fun. Azmus right, if that isn't a date then I'm a big juicy BLT sandwich.
"They're almost a naive as Will and Genny." Azmus clucking, putting his phone away and digging into the rest my lunch.
Again I had to agree. This was a interesting subject though, it was making me feel all weird, so I didn't continue it. Azmus started happily multitasking between eating and scrolling. I was about to go back to my own thoughts when he frowned and mumbled something through my sandwhich.
"Huh?" I asked, wanting to know what was up.
Azmus swallowed and showed me an Instagram video. "Aren't those Will's parents?"
I stared at the screen. They were standing in front of a building. There was a small crowd, it looks like there was a protest going on. There were camera's and new reporters. The two adults were talking, I couldn't catch much of what they were saying, but I spot Worthington in the back, I frowned in disappointment. Just when my day was going so well that man had to ruin it with his face.
"Wait..." I realized, as I took in the details of the background, "we were just over there."
Azmus' eyes widened and he peered closer at his phone. "You're right, that's the bank you were at, hey Will!"
The tall blonde, who had previously jumped tables to chat with Genny, looked up at the three of us. Azmus gestured him over and his normally cheery aura strained as he watched the short clip.
"Do you think they know we're here?" I questioned.
"Why else would they try to draw us out like this?" Will muttered under his breath.
"They'll only be drawing us out if we take the bait." Azmus pointed out.
I was suddenly struck with the notion that if Icie were here, she would slap the back of his head for the pun. I'm not sure why though, and the feeling soon left me.
"I'm going." Will replied vaguely before starting to walk away.
"Whoa whoa whoa!" I screeched, zipping up my jacket and scrambling out of my chair after him. "Not without me you're not, I never miss a chance to punch Worthington."
"I do hope you boys don't plan on going anywhere without permission!" Mr. Wales left out a fatherly screech from his table.
"He won't let us." Will mumbled so only I could here him.
"Then let's just stay here." I tried to argue.
"You don't get it, I have to do this. Someone has to stand up to them." He argued back.
Justin popped up on my right. "What's up? You boys having an argument?"
"My parents are at a rally, I was going to go and-"
"And what? Stir up trouble for the Lab?" Justin asked raising an eyebrow. "Gosh, I'll have to ask my girlfriend if I can come."
"What are you three talking about?" Asked Mr. Wales, who was now towering over us, looking like he might be ready to grab our scruffs at any moment.
Azmus showed everyone else the video and they watched it in silence.
"What ever Tyler's down for, I'm down for." Tui spoke up, she rested a supporting hand on my shoulder.
Mr. Wales stroked his stubble and continued to watch the video as it replayed itself. "How did you get this?"
Azmus grinned. "I've been reaching out to other modified humans over social media. Not all of them have that much info to help us out with, but at least we've got eyes all over."
In the back of my mind I was actually quite impressed. I nodded dully.
"How dangerous can it be?" Sabine asked, leaning against Justin.
"Very, riots means police, police means guns. You guys are just kids, remember that." He stressed, his voice strained and serious.
"We can't just continue to let them say stuff like this." Will argued defiantly. "It isn't right."
"What if the people there are on our side." Genny pointed out.
I just wanted to punch people, but sure, there were sentimental reasons as well. Punching people didn't require smarts, it was something I could be good at without embarrassing myself.
"Absolutely not." Mr. Wales insisted, he seemed very set on this decision.
The older man leaned back against the table, suddenly overcome by emotion. "Look, you're young, you want to fight. I know you guys have been through a lot, but I can't allow you to make stupid decisions like this."
Out of the corner of my eye I saw something flash in Justin's eyes. Something below his normally happy facade, whatever Mr. Wales was implying he understood. I saw him fiddle with his hands nervously. Which was strange because Justin never seemed nervous, he was always so comfortable.
"Well," Will started. "You don't have to make this decision for me."
Before I even knew what was happened, the blonde took off and tore across the street. We were only a few blocks away from the bank so it wouldn't take him long to get there. I locked eyes with Justin, we came to an agreement for once.
I whipped out my wings, which is your average bird kids demand for space. I watched as Justin pulled Sabine close and kissed her quick, before the two of us bolted after Will, our screaming and panicked peers behind us. I felt my heart speed up as my feet hit the ground and I pulled my jacket back on.
I looked back to see Mr. Wales was struggling to keep everyone else from going after us. We were in the clear until a small bubble of frizzy hair suddenly broke free.
"Tyler, wait for me!" Tui called.
I slowed down just enough for her to catch up with us. I reached out and she took my hand. Now we were a group of four sneaking off to go flame a riot. This whole mutant kid business was really fun sometimes.
It didn't actually take us long to spot Will. His huge wings were poorly hidden under his trench coat and he looked like he had a deformed back. People were staying clear of him as he pushed through the crowd of people, and we pushed after him.
"Hey Will!" Justin called...
Will looked around confused until he spotted the four of us, then frowned.
"You guy's are going to get in so much trouble."
"So are you." I pointed out.
He opened his mouth to refute my point then stopped and shrugged. "True."
I zeroed in on what the mass of people were gathered around. I could see Will's parents, but they weren't facing up, and some level of security surrounded them. I didn't see Worthington anywhere so that was mildly disappointing. Will pushed forward, we followed him until we were on the edge of crowd. It only took a few moments before the two of them locked eyes with eyes.
His parents immediately started to move toward the building. There was a security guard pushing us back. They were going to get away, I could tell. Then Will did something I wasn't expecting. His coat fell to the ground and his massive wingspan spread out over the heads of all the people.
At least he has a shirt on, was my only thought as the regular humans around us immediately moved out of the way. Probably out of fear. Even the security guards weren't sure what to do for a moment as Will jumped forward.
His parents strayed on the edge on the door, pausing to notice the commotion he was causing.
"It's William!" Someone shouted.
Right, Will was supposed to be dead.
Will paused to turn back to the crowd. "Everybody listen up!"
A lot of people actually went silent. I mean I would too if a kid with wings suddenly dropped out of the sky.
"Whatever trash you've heard from them, don't believe it!" He shouted. "They're the ones that did this to me!"
The crowd went into an uproar. They struggled against the line of security holding them. Will grinned, looking triumphant. I was impressed, but also feeling slightly betrayed. What was he doing? Weren't we supposed to be keeping the whole mutant thing a secret?
A police officer grabbed, his arms. He struggled and fought and the officer started to drag him into the building. The rest of us saw out moment and jumped forward.
I punched the lady in the face without a single drop of regret, only to find my hands cuffed behind my back within seconds.
"Hey!" I protested, struggling as the woman I punched gave me a sharp look, her nose was bleeding.
"You're in way over your head kid." She growled under her breath, taking hold of my arm and dragging me inside.
I fought against my jacket, struggling to get it off so I can hit her with one of my wings, or fly away or something. I wasn't the best flyer and heights kinda freaked me out.
To my surprise and utter horror she pulled out a wide strap and fixed it around my torso. I was trapped and I didn't like it at all.
Will was in a particular predicament, and so was Justin. My heart skipped a beat as I glanced around for Tui. She didn't deserve to get into this mess. I spotted her in the back, also handcuffed. We had really messed up now.
"I don't want to say my uncle was right, but..."Justin started as were were sat down at a fold out table in front of the angry woman I had punched.
"Was worth it though." Will had a smirk on his face. "I've wanted to do that for so long."
"Who do you think you are, punk?" The police officer asked us. "I'd do no better if sent you back to the Lab myself."
The four of went silent.
"I'm sorry." Justin laughed, nervously. "We have no idea what-"
"Shut up." She hissed. "The Lab doesn't want you anymore boys. If she wanted you, you would have been behind bars months ago."
"Excuse me?" Tui asked quietly, probably because she had just been indirectly excluded.
"Who looks after you these days? Richard Wales?" She raised an eyebrow. "I'll wait until he gets here."
"Why doesn't the Lab want us anymore?" Will asked.
The woman grinned. "You were just the guinea pigs, we don't need you anymore. Every single one of you is a mistake."
"I'm gonna let you go hun, but first the boss want me to show you this."
She held up her phone. On her screen a video was playing. It looked like security footage of a hospital. My heart dropped into my stomach, I heard Tui stifle a gasp, Will looked up at the woman with an expression of disbelief.
Alex Santos was laying unconscious on a hospital bed.
Worthington walked into frame, the video lagged, and then all of a sudden he was flicking the syringe.
"No." Tui gasped, holding her hands to her mouth. "Please no."
Worthington took the syringe and lifted up Alex's wrist, then emptied whatever had been inside into Alex's bloodstream. A moment passed and then Alex woke up and began to writhe. There was no sound but I could tell he was screaming.
Tui slapped the cell phone out of the woman hand with such force I heard a sharp crack when it hit the concrete wall. "How dare you!"
She was on the verge of tears and her hands were shaking. I couldn't even process what was going on, all I could see was the image of Alex writhing in pain, playing over and over again in my head.
"Maybe next time you won't be so disobedient." She warned, and left us locked in that room, eating for Mr. Wales to come and get us.
What have we done?
