Old Frienemies
The next few minutes were a blur. Anne Marie was right, there was a hospital surprisingly close to where we were. She checked us into the Emergency Room, there was another problem when the doctors showed up to take Icie.
Lucy Green showed up.
"No." Genny was the first one to try and slam the breaks. "Not her!"
"What's going on?" Anne Marie demanded, turning to face us.
"You kids?" Lucy gasped. "What are you-?"
"Is this really the time?" I argued.
"Shut up! Everyone shut up!" Dylan practically yelled, he was definitely near tears. "Do you promise not to her hurt?"
Lucy stared at him in shock for a moment. "I promise."
Dylan let Lucy take her onto a stretcher. Then both of them disappeared.
"What's going on?" Anne Marie demanded, pointedly looking at me.
I glanced around, looking at the other people in the emergency room, they weren't paying attention to us.
"Um, it's a long story." I started.
She grabbed onto my arm. "Hey, look at at me when you talk."
I thought that was a bit strange, but sure. "We got into a fight, and our friend got hurt. Two actually, Hayami-?"
"I'm doing fine." She sighed.
Anne Marie glanced over at her. "Oh! I didn't even notice, that doesn't look good at all."
Lucy Green suddenly burst through the door. She gestured at our group. "You kids, come with me."
"Where's Icie?" Dylan glared.
"She's with the best doctors I know, she's gonna be okay." Lucy assured. "It's a good thing you got her here in time."
Dylan still looked suspicious. "Okay. Where are you taking us?"
"My office, I figured you might want to get out of the way of prying eyes." She explained, glancing over at the other people who were now starting to notice me.
We shared a look and nodded. None of us liked the idea but it was better than staying here. Lucy led us down the halls until she got to a small room. Hayami immediately collapsed into one of the chairs. She didn't look okay.
"I'm gonna call Will, and Mr. Wales." Genny announced, refusing to go inside.
Lucy grabbed a first aid kit and started to look at Hayami's shoulder. Hayami stepped away from her, glaring suspiciously at her.
"You're gonna pass out if I don't clean that up." Lucy sighed. "Please, you guys. I'm not out to get you."
Anne Marie was observing the scene with growing fascination. Hayami muttered under breath but sat done on the corner of Lucy's desk so the redhead could tend to her shoulder.
"What...who are you guys?" Anne Marie asked, she stared at me in a weird mix of horror and fascination.
I hated it. It reminded me of the time I had spent with Harold. I bit my lip and refused to meet her gaze.
"Tyler?" She continued. "What's going on?"
"It's not really-"
"You're gonna need to look at me, sorry." Anne Marie sighed.
I forced myself to look up at her. "You know the mutants from the news?"
"It's you guys, isn't it?" She finished.
I stretched out my wings for emphasis. She gasped, stepping back a bit before looking at me for permission.
"Can I...?" She inquired.
"Yeah." I had a feeling she could ask me for anything and I would let her.
Her hands pulled along the spot where Dragonfire had nearly broken the bone. I winced. She noticed this and withdrew her hands.
"What did you fight?" She asked in curiosity.
"Another mutant. Project Dragonfire." I spat.
Lucy dropped the guaze she had been wrapping around Hayami's arm. "How do you know about that? I'm not even supposed to know about that."
"We broke in and stole the information." I smirked.
Anne Marie's gaze flicked back and forth between us. "That alligator thing? The biological warfare pamphlet? You fought that?"
"Crocodile." Hayami corrected, Anne Marie didn't seem to notice.
"Are all of you like that?" She breathed, in obvious disbelief.
"I am obviously." I said.
Hayami used her free hand to pulled her braid loose. Her hair started to float up to the ceiling on it's own will. Dylan, who had been quiet for the majority of the time, stared up at her with his unsettling yellow eyes.
"Oh my God." Anne Marie gasped, taking this all in, she sat down in one of the chairs. "That's insane."
"Yeah well, now you know." I pointed out.
Dylan glanced up at Lucy. "When can I go see Icie?"
"It'll probably be a few hours." Lucy informed.
He nodded numbly, putting his head in his hands and sighed.
"Why are you helping us?" I asked Lucy.
She paused. "I...I've been wanting to do this for a long time actually. I've never agreed with the way of the Lab."
"Then why did you help them in the first place?" Hayami questioned somewhat sarcastically.
Lucy seemed reserved. "Well, they promised me they would help me have kids...but obviously that's not working out."
I took in this information. It didn't make me feel any more comfortable around her. I could see her motive I guess.
"What's the Lab?" Anne Marie asked me.
"It's...it's the place where this happened." I gestured to my wings. "It's not a good place."
"I see." She nodded slowly.
"How much do you guys know about Dragonfire?" Lucy asked.
"We know he's a raging maniac." Hayami said in spite.
"He's not like that all the time, only when he's on the hormone drugs that were made for him." Lucy started.
We glanced up at her, this was new information. This was important.
"He's got a little chip in his brain that can send out the drug on command, he's like a remote control attack dog." Lucy continued.
Anne Marie had to sit down again.
"Do you know who he is?" Hayami asked, as Lucy finished wrapping her arm.
Lucy shook her head. "He just showed up one day. I'm not...I'm not very involved so I'm not up to date on everything. I know he's just a kid like you guys. It's...it's harder to do this kind of stuff to adults, since they're already fully developed."
None of us had anything to say to that. We just sat there in awkward silence for a bit until Lucy coughed again.
"Also...it's Dylan right?" She asked.
Dylan wiped his face and looked up. "Y-yeah?"
"You're the fifth version of Dragonfire, besides the one you current on, you were...sorry but, the most successful. The way this drug was created, you'll have and effect on him. Dragonfire, he won't attack you unless provoked while on the drug. Just a little advantage for you, I guess."
Dylan nodded, his eyes were glassy like he wasn't even paying attention. I imagine he was still focused on Icie. I would be too if I were him.
"How do you know all this if you aren't directly involved?" I demanded.
"James, I know you probably hate him, but we're both on your side. He's directly involved." Lucy explained.
"Just great." I sighed, she was right, I did hate him.
Genny reappeared. "Mr. Wales is on his way. Plus a few others."
"Who's coming?" Anne Marie questioned, still looking a bit blown away.
"He's kinda like everyone's legal guardian at once, and some more of our friends." I explained for her, I don't know why but she seemed partial to me for answers and I couldn't help but notice it.
"How many more of you are there?" She blinked.
I let out a puff on air and shrugged. I had no idea. I was far to busy to personally introduce myself to everyone at the school. Anne Marie just kind of shook her head in disbelief.
"The Lab's been trying to perfect their genetic manipulation for decades." Lucy said ominously. "Only now with Dragonfire, they're actually achieved it."
I decided we could worry about that later, now we should focus on Icie, Mr. Wales, and whatever the heck we were gonna do about Anne Marie.
