I Hate Feeling Sorry for People I Don't Like

I was still less than thrilled to find Worthington still waiting for me when the three of us got back.

"How's Icie?" Sabine asked as soon as Dylan rolled in.

He smiled cheekily. "Oh she's doing great."

Worthington looked up, his pose was awkward and you could tell he obviously felt uncomfortable sitting in a room with a bunch of misfit teenagers who he had tried to maim at one point. Good, let him suffer. Every nervous sweat drop that poured down his forehead was a sweat drop of victory.

"I have some, um, explaining to do." He started, hesitantly. "I'm sorry, again. I know it's not enough. You don't have to be nice to me just...hear me out. Please."

Mr. Wales looked like he wanted a cup of tea to sip cynically on. "I think we can consider this a temporary truce James."

Worthington swallowed and nodded. Justin who had been coolly observing from the wall, nudged my shoulder gently.

"What're you thinking?"

I blinked up at him. "Huh?"

"About Worthington, you look like you have some strong opinions." Justin raised an eyebrow at me.

I squinted in dismay. "Oh I don't like this situation at all. I will gladly punch him as soon as he turns out to be a traitor."

Justin laughed, I frowned because that wasn't a joke. Whatever. I guess it was funny. Everyone had started to chat quietly amount themselves while we waited for Lucy to get back. Dylan was doing great now, he was probably the most upbeat I had ever seen him. Sabine was talking with him because she was still concerned about Icie, and she was a huge mom. Hayami and Tui glared at James together. Genny and Will were huddled in a corner, very close. In fact, like, dating close.

"Are they...together?"

"Genny and Will?" Justin followed my gesture. "Oh yeah, finally am I right?"

This was alarming. Sabine and Justin were together, now Genny and Will, wait a second.

I shot Dylan a suspicious glance.

You know at this rate, I might actually the last single man left. This was not good. There was no way I was gonna let every other friend I had third wheel me.

"Huh." Was all I think to say.

"Same." He finger gunned at me.

"Shut up, you have a girlfriend."

Justin's face broke out in a wide grin. "Oh yeah."

I shook my head at him, then glanced back at Will and Genny. How hard was it to get a girlfriend? It seemed easy in theory but the thought of actually trying it made my stomach twist uncomfortably.

"What do you think she sees in him?" I asked, somewhat rhetorically.

Justin scoffed. "Will? He's the hottest guy here, no contest. Blonde, tan, athletic. Plus wings, what's not to like? Only he has no idea, he has zero clue how lovable he is. Honestly I'm surprised it took this long."

Wait. "What?"

Justin rolled his eyes. "I had a crush on him for a solid month I think. Not that he's anything to compare to Sabine of course, but still."

"Are you gossiping about me?" Sabine looked up when she heard her name.

"Only about how beautiful you are babe."

I grimaced, suddenly feeling the strong urge to throw up. "Okay let's talk about something else."

As if in attempt to save me from Justin's torturing PDA, the door opened and Lucy was back.

"Icie doing fine, she's gonna be okay." She announced, we cheered.

"Are you gonna tell us what you're gonna tell now?" Tui asked, still prickly as porcupine.

They looked at each other. Worthington rubbed the back of his head.

"Let me start from the beginning. I was about nineteen years old when I was made...like this."

"We know you're immortal." Hayami cut him off. "We read your diary."

"Hayami, he wasn't supposed to know about that." Justin scolded her.

Worthington blushed. "My- oh. Oh I was wondering where that went. That's unfortunate. I guess you know what's going on now, but what you don't know is how the Lab was founded."

Everyone grew quiet. He was right, we didn't know that. I hated being at a disadvantage.

"As I said, I was nineteen. I'm not actually immortal I just...don't age very quickly. I needed money and I couldn't join the military, I actually had really bad asthma, so here was this easy way to get cash. It was stupid, and it was the beginning of a lot of stupid mistakes. This man, his name was Leonardo Sanchez, he was doing biological work in the states in attempt to figure out some of the diseases that were circling around. He was the first. I was the only person who hadn't started breaking down after some of their experiments, so I signed on as a job. He kept testing things on me and prolonging my life until he thought it was safe enough to test on himself."

Worthington grimaced. "Long story short, it didn't work. His son picked up the practice, I started working for him. He was the first to bring in young kids. There were two others, I don't really remember them all that well-"

"Harriet and Fred." Mr. Wales interrupted, he sounded dead serious.

I saw Justin's hand grip his armrest a little tighter.

Worthington seemed to put two and two together. "Oh, yeah. I wasn't allowed to talk to them. They eventually grew up and ran away, the facility wasn't built as well as it is now-"

Tui snorted. "It still isn't."

The two of them shrugged, and Worthington kept going. "True. Eventually he grew old and passed on the business to his daughter. She's...terrifying. She didn't even want to be part of it in the beginning, but something...I forget. Something happened and she kinda of just...became obsessed. She won't let me leave, even though she has a better me."

"A better you?" Will inquired.

"Dragonfire." Worthington explained. "It's the perfect combination of everything her family has worked on so far. Powerful and controllable, with perfect genes. Technically she doesn't need any of us, with her serum she could build a perfect army and do whatever she wants."

"So why isn't she doing anything?" Genny scoffed.

Worthington shrugged desperately. "I don't know! No ones knows! That's why I want to leave. She's insane. I can't because I'm scared she might kill me, you should have seen what she did last-"

He cut himself off as he glanced at his watched, then stood up suddenly. "I have to go."

"Hang on, where? How do we know you didn't just call the Lab?" I demanded.

He looked panicked. "I just told you the entire history of your biggest enemy, I'm sorry if that isn''t enough for you, but if I don't go now you might not have me to give you information anymore."

"Wait." Tui interjected somewhat desperately. "Do you know where my brother is? Is he okay? His name is Alex, Alex Santos."

Worthington look panicked. "No, but I'll look for him, okay? Please, let me leave."

Mr. Wales opened the door and he rushed out in a jumbled mess.

"I hate to tell you kids this, but if he's not kidding about what he's saying, he could be a valuable asset." Mr. Wales sighed.

"Please." Lucy begged. "We're trying our hardest."

"You and I can talk about that later. I want the kids to go home. You guys need your sleep and some food. Abby's coming to pick you all up."

    "All of us?" Will mused.

"I have my ways. I'll stay and look after Icie." He assured.

I grumbled, but obliged. I was kinda hungry. I didn't like the fact that we were trusting Worthington- James, I didn't like the fact that we were trusting James. I had to admit, what we had learned so far was valuable. I guess I would just have to suck it up and deal. When he turned on us, which I still believe was definitely an option, I would be ready to defend and fight. A small part of me did hope it never came to that.
