I Am Accused of 'Liking Things'

One of the nice things about having an extremely wealthy, overprotective principal incontestably attempting to fill the father role for everyone was he did indeed have his own airplane, but you should already know this. Don't ask me anything about it because I don't know zilch about airplanes, but from my perspective it looked pretty big.

A few days of Mr. Wales pulling some strings were had a private flight of our own, blah blah, boring stuff. I didn't care. I hated airplanes personally. You want to know what was hard? Convincing him to let us go. The entire flight over he kept mumbling things under his breath and hunching his shoulders up. Not everyone was coming as well. Theo was coming, because Mr. Wales was stressed out enough just trying to manage us all, along with Will, Genny, Justin, Dylan, Azmus, Icie, Sabine, Chespin, Tui, and I. We were the 'older kids' who got to go on special field trips like this, yippee.

I'll spare you a long, seven hour, boring, flight later and tell you the interesting stuff happened when we checked into our two hotel rooms. I was slightly salty the four girls got their own room when I had to share with six other boys.

"Are we allowed to call beds?" Justin asked, sitting criss-cross on the far right one.

"Dylan get's his own, you guys can divide up the rest." Mr. Wales commanded, setting down our suitcases.

Theo nodded, but the remaining five of us let out a collective groan as we realized that left us two beds. Dylan smirked from his perch on presumedly, his chosen bed.

"Hey, anyone who bunks with me can pay my hospital bill for any gaping, bloody, ulcers." He taunted.

Mr. Wales whacked the back of Dylan's head, and insisted the teen was joking. I decided personally to shut up and fight over the remaining beds. A few minutes a teenage squabbling and ordering more blankets for those of us on the floor, Theo had pulled out his laptop. He and Chespin were gathered around Dylan, who was typing.

I walked away from the spontaneous pillow fight, started by Justin, to see what was up. It was either that or I accidentally slice a pillow in half. They were looking at a map, it had lots of colors and words and numbers.

"You guys are going to love learning how to use the subway." Dylan commented, as his typed in search came up.

"This is where the bank is?" "Theo asked.

Dylan nodded, "do you want me to send it to you?"

"Actually I was hoping you might come with us, because you used to live here and know how to get around." Theo suggested, glancing at him hopefully.

Dylan glanced down at his feet and started rubbing his arms again. "I really don't want to go back there, if that's alright with you. Besides, it's a lot of work getting me anywhere nowadays."

Theo nodded. "I can respect that. We can call you if we need help right?"

Dylan nodded. Only me, being slow to put things together as I always am was still hung up on Theo's words.

"Wait you used to live here?" I blinked.

Chespin gave me that sassy eight-year old glare. "Come on Tyler, like, everyone knows that by now."

Part of me was surprised Dylan used to live here, the other part of me was hung up on the fact I had been sassed by Chespin. All three of the boys who were currently in this conversation seemed amused, which I won't lie was frustrating to some extent.

"So if you're not coming with us, are you just gonna hang out in the hotel all day or what?" Chespin sled, hanging on Dylan's shoulder. "I can show you how to play Pokémon."

Dylan snorted. "Everyone knows how to play Pokémon. I was going to try and visit my old apartment, maybe pick up some of my stuff. That is, if Mr. Wales will let me."

I was slightly offended because I hadn't the slightest clue what a pokey mom was but it definitely did sound worth my time. I was also distracted because as if he had been summoned the man appeared from around the corner. "Are you going somewhere?"

"Can I go visit my old apartment?" Dylan asked politely.

Mr. Wales squinted at him, deep in thought. "Only if you bring someone along, I won't have anyone wandering around alone, Tyler?"

We glanced at each other and mutually decided that was a bad idea.

"I was thinking Icie?" Dylan asked. "She's very responsible."

Mr. Wales gave us that adult squinty look that meant he thought we were up to something. He raised a finger and pointed at Dylan.

"Icie, and Azmus. Make sure to bring Azmus." He demanded before slinking back around the corner.

Theo had gone off to chat with the others so the three of us shared a look before Dylan and I laughed, while Chespin played along. There was a sudden gasp from the larger group and Will rose above the suddenly halted pillow fight.

"We're going on a real subway?" He exclaimed. "Whoa!"

"In the morning!" Mr. Wales screeched. "It's almost midnight for goodness sake. Go to sleep."

That's when we stettled down for the night. After some more excited whispering and last minute bed negotiations. I was on the floor, I didn't like sharing, it was alright though.

___

I woke up the next morning to some excited gasping among my peers. Glancing around blearily I discovered the girls had taken this moment to join us. Will and Genny were at the window whispering vividly. Sabine was looking punk rock as usual even in pajamas. Tui was staring at me expectantly, which sent off minor warning sirens in my brain before morning grogginess slapped it away.

"Huh?" I said dumbly.

"I was just saying it looks like we woke you up." She explained.

"Tyler come here." Will whispered loudly, gesturing for me to walk towards him.

I glanced around and realized we were one of the few awake at this ungodly hour. Mostly everyone was sleeping, except for Mr. Wales of course, there was a dulled shower noise coming from the bathroom I could guess where he was.

"Look!" Will pointed eagerly. "The window's frosted over."

By frosted over he meant the edges, which was even more unimpressive. "Yeah, it's like zero degrees out there."

"I hope it snows." Genny sighed. "It's around that time of year, that would be nice."

"I don't like snow." I frowned.

"You don't like anything.' Genny shoved me lightly.

"That's not true." I frowned even more aggressively.

"Oh, what are you implying?" Icie spoke up from the back of the room, from Dylan's bed.

I couldn't see her because she was laying on her back and looking at her phone but I could just tell from the tone of her voice she had wiggled her eyebrows. I had to admit I did not a an immediate response to that so I blushed out of embarrassment and opened and closed my mouth like a fish a few times.

    "I'm implying...that...I do, like...things." I said carefully.

"Oh my gosh, who is it?" Justin practically screeched, poking his head around the bathroom corner holding a toothbrush. "I cannot stand to listen and not know."

"Who is what?" I asked, my face twisting as I struggled not to lead them on.

Justin disappeared for a second to rinse his mouth of toothpaste before he got all up in my face. "Who do you have a crush on? Boy or girl?"

"What?" I sputtered. "No, I don't," I paused. "Like anyone. Period."

Justin gave me that face that told me he didn't believe a single word. "Oh, come on, you're probably just as oblivious as those two."

He raised his eyebrows, nodding, and jabbed a thumb at Genny and Will.

"What?" They both asked at the same time.

"You, don't have to tell, I get it. Just stay away from Sabine, because she's taken." He causally put an arm around her shoulder, Sabine blushed and pushed it off.

"Knock it off guys, there's a reason we're here." Theo scolded us from the back.

"Yeah." I joined in. "I'm going to get ready."

I awkwardly shuffled off to go find something that wasn't pajamas. Genny frowned and looked at Will.

"I'm so confused, does everyone think we're dating?" She asked.

Will blinked. "Oh, I guess they do."

Genny gave a small, slightly nervous, laugh. "Funny."

Will copied her slightly forced laugh and joined in. "Right, weird."

Both of them coughed and looked away.

    __

"Has everyone got a partner?" Mr. Wales asked, now that he was showered and ready to face the horrors of the subway with ten teenagers.

I had gotten Tui, thank goodness. For a moment I was scared half to death he might assign me with Justin and have him trying to guess my fake crush the whole way. She made a peace sign at me and stuck out her tongue, I smiled.

"If you don't mind, Mr. Wales. I'll be off now." Dylan announced, Icie and Azmus at his side.

Mr. Wales' face blanked, then he nodded in realization. "Please be careful, and I want you back at the hotel at five o'clock you hear me."

Dylan nodded, seemingly absolutely serious. "If anyone suspicious comes after these two, I'll beat em up."

He got a sharp laugh out of Icie before she stopped abruptly and looked seriously back at Mr. Wales.

Mr. Wales shook his head. "Alright alright, go."

The three of them went off to travel the streets while we went down the stairs. The underground network of trains was cool. It kind of stunck, but you got used to it. Surprisingly no one really questioned the group of now seven kids and one adult, especially since we had to get Will a trench coat. His wings stuck way out of his sweatshirt nowadays. Chespin had started to call him Sherlock, with Will faking a terrible British accent accordingly. It was a good thing Mr. Wales had lived in England, where they had subways, because it was just a bug confusing mess to me.

Then, suddenly, we were finally topside again. As soon as I saw the light of the overcast sky again, I heard Theo crack his knuckles.

"You kids ready to sneak into a bank?"
