Genevieve
It was just Genny, Will, and Abby going to find Genny's parents. They had gotten home before Mr. Wales had, but they had received a text that things went well with them too.
Genny stared out the window as they drove and drove. It had been quite a few hours now, in was late in the night. Will was conked out against the opposite window, probably drooling. His wings taking up a lot more space nowadays. Abby, with coffee in hand, continued to smolder faintly on the road.
"Is that...snow?" Genny asked, staring out the window as the flecks whizzing by.
"I think so. we're pretty high up in the mountains now, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little." Abby replied.
Genny reached over and shook Will awake so he could see. He jerked up, looking around blearily.
"Did I fall asleep? Is that snow?" He asked, eyes widening.
"Yeah, we're really high up or something." Genny smiled slightly.
Will blinked. "That makes the occasion all the more special then."
"We're almost there too." Abby announced. "Only a few more miles."
A few minutes later Abby pulled in a small road off the main one where Genny vaguely recognized a neighborhood looking thins of sort. The houses were big and hanging hazardly off of steep hills with pine trees growing all around them. It was dark though and still snowing lightly so it was hard to see all that much.
Genny wasn't sure what to feel. She wasn't sure what too feel about anything. This whole situation made her feel kinda scared and confused. At least Will was here, he was probably one of her closest friends and she trusted him a lot, probably more than friends do. He was just so nice and caring, and well...cute. He was downright adorable without even trying sometimes. He made this better.
"Here we are." Abby said, slowing down to a stop in front of what looked like a pale blue house.
Pale blue was calm so at least that was working out for her. They got out of the car and Abby walked right and started looking for a front door.
"You doing okay?" Will asked. "Do you needs a...what did Justin call them? Encouragement hug?"
Genny blushed softly. "Nah, I think I'm good. I just, I never met my parents. I don't remember them at all. I don't know what they're like or if they even like me. I just help but-"
She stopped suddenly, biting her tongue.
"Never mind it's stupid."
Will gave her a sincere look. "Hey, nothing about is stupid okay. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
Genny blushed. Gosh, this is what she meant when she said he was too nice, it was almost unbearable, how he knew exactly what to say. "I was just thinking, what if they gave me up? What they didn't want me?"
"Genny, ah man this is gonna sound cheesy. You amazing, and even if they did give you up it's their loss, and who cares what they think." Will replied firmly.
He put his fists up in mock battle stance, like he might fight whoever got in there way. Genny found the gesture amusing, it was so orange/yellow of him. It made her feel sunset pink.
"Hey! I found the door!" Abby called out, cupping her mittens.
"Now remember, if they don't answer it's probably because it's late, not because we're these totally rad strangers who just showed up at their door. My guess is these people aren't used to random visitors all the way up here." Abby commented, on hand on her hip. "Fist bumps of encouragement first."
She exchanged a bro fist with the two of them. Will grinned, Genny simply followed along with basic fist bump etiquette.
"You guys are no fun." She said playfully, knocking on the door. "Dylan usually adds sounds effects, complete with explosion."
The idea also amused Genny. Dylan had always seemed sad all the time. She didn't like to eavesdrop on his emotions all that much because his were a mess. brushing past him was like getting caught in a maelstrom of black, white, and red. The colors weren't orderly either they were chaotic scrambles that tore through everything. The only reason she'd hesitated after kissing him was because she had never encountered someone who's colors were like that before. She was surprised because that sounded liked a very pale blue thing for him to do, maybe he was getting better. Those colors still made her shudder.
Surprisingly, the door opened after a few minutes. A middle aged man with scruffy stubble and a bottle in hand opened the door. Genny held her breath and wondered if the man before her was her father.
"We're looking for Mr. And Mrs. Wallace?" Abby asked him politely.
The man gave her an almost pitiful glare. "Ma'am, the Wallace haven't lived here for years."
Genny was almost relived it wasn't him.
"Do you know where they might have moved to?" Will inquired.
The man scratched his head as if he were unsure of what to say. "As far as I know they've passed away, I'm sorry."
Genny's heart skipped a beat. "Passed away? As in dead?"
The man nodded grimly. "I'm incredibly sorry. You go check the graveyard a little ways down the road if you want, it's a nice place, quiet and undisturbed."
"Thank you," Abby interjected, seeing as Genny had started to tear up. "Maybe we will. Sorry to bother you at this hour, we hope you have a lovely night."
Abby wrapped and arm around Genny's shoulders after the man closed the door. Genny zipped her jacket up, it was starting to get cold.
"You okay kiddo?" She asked, rubbing her back gently.
"Does this mean my parents are dead?" Genny asked, still in disbelief.
"It's sounds like it. I'm sorry Genny, I hoped this would be one of the better trips." Abby comforted. "Do you wanna go up to the graveyard? It's completely your choice, you don't have to do anything you're uncomfortable with."
Genny paused for a moment, swaying in her heels while the the snowflakes twirled around them. Will graciously shrugged off half on his jacket so her could stretch a wing over the two girls and stop the majority of the snowfall from coming down on them.
"I think I do." Genny said after a while. "I don't want to leave and regret it later."
Will took her hand when they got out of the car for the second time, and she was instantly flooded with his light purple sense of support and rose-pink caring. That was calming.
"I'll be here if you guys need anything." Abby said, then they walked in.
The little area enclosed by small gates was somewhat charming. Genny would have thought it would have been creepy this late into the night but, strangely enough it wasn't.
"What you thinking?" Will asked, as they walked around carefully.
"I don't know." Genny replied. "I want to know what happened to them, I want to know if they loved me..."
Genny trailed off because Will's feelings had changed slightly. She always thought it was hard to describe in words, but the best explanation was the pink side got a bit darker. It was more of scarlet-pink now.
"Does it matter all that much?" Will asked, suddenly, out of the blue (or in Genny's case out of the darker scarlet-pink)
Genny looked up at him confused. "What do you mean?"
Will looked uncomfortable, he looked back at the car, maybe to see if Abby was watching. "I'm sorry that came out wrong. What I mean is...I mean I hate seeing you so down on yourself."
He blushed and for a moment Genny could not recognize what emotions she was picking up, no one had ever felt this way before.
"I mean, my parents probably hate me and I've learned to live with that, but yours aren't even alive and you care so much about what they think...when...when you shouldn't, because you're amazing. And I, er I mean, even if we somehow find out they didn't care all that much, why should it matter because there's so many people you know now who love you a lot. Me being one of them. I guess that's what I'm trying to say." He managed, hiding his face behind his hands.
"Will...are you saying you have a crush on me?" Genny realized, finally finding the words to match the color.
Will blushed even deeper. "Yeah, I kinda do okay. Okay a lot. I'm sorry if that makes things awkward I didn't want to ruin-"
"Oh my gosh." Genny giggled, before pulling him forward and giving him a quick peck on the lips.
Will kinda froze like he'd short circuited. "Oh. Oh, so does this mean..."
"I guess it does, you just denied liking me all the time so I assumed you didn't and went along with it. Will!"
She laughed again, immensely relived, and punched his arm. "You should have just told me, you birdbrain."
He let out a nervous, high pitched laugh. "Ah, well. That's something I wasn't expecting to happen today, ha ha."
He stood there, smiling, before suddenly leaning down again to give Genny a proper kiss. Genny could barely process it past the jittery happy oranges and pale pinks that flew around everywhere in Will's head. It made her heart skip a beat and want to laugh out loud. He cupped the back of her head and leaned in deeper. The colors got a shade more saturated until Genny could no longer breath. They broke apart, grinning.
"Do you wanna be my girlfriend?" Will added, probably caught up in the moment.
Genny laughed again. "Yes of course!"
The two of them stood there breathless and giggling happily. Until all of a sudden Genny happened to look down.
"Will, look." She pointed, suddenly a little less excited.
It was just two gravestones, placed pretty close too each other with simple yet elegant carvings. Genny recognized the names with a sudden jolt of...fear? Whatever it was it was a dark purple and she wasn't sure she liked it.
Arthur Wallace, Florence Wallace. Genevieve Wallace.
Then below that it had one simple sentence.
People are like flowers, the most beautiful ones are chosen to die young.
"This is it, that's them." She said, kneeling down.
They sat there silently looking at the space respectively. Until Genny noticed something.
"Hey wait, it says they only died five years ago." She observed, feeling a sharp jab of bright red.
Will, staring at where was was gesturing too. He looked as confused as she felt.
"Does that mean they're been alive for all this time and they never came looking for me? This means I'd have spent three years at Gifted before they died, what does that mean?" She stressed, feeling agitated and switching back and forth between yellow and red.
"Genny, we have no idea how they died, " Will pointed out, "who knows, what happened to them?"
Genny was just about to open her mouth when all of a sudden a flashlight beam shown upon them. Will jumped in surprise and struggled to pull his jacket back on, as he had been sheltering Genny from the majority of the snowfall with his wings, while they were outside. Meanwhile a white-faced older woman stared at them in both shock and anger.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
Genny wasn't sure if she had noticed that fact that her boyfriend had giant white white, but she was sure the woman was working up to it. Maybe she hadn't seen them yet.
"We, uh..." Will was still shocked from having a bright light suddenly flashed at him.
"We came to look for my parents." Genny said plainly.
"Why are your parents in a graveyard at this hour?" She continued cynically.
Genny's throat went dry. "Well they're dead."
The old lady's face softened. "Oh, oh I'm sorry. We've been having trouble with vandals lately and I just- I'm incredibly sorry. I you find them, and don't be too long, alright? It's pretty cold out."
"Yeah." Genny pointed down at their gravestones. "We were just talking."
The old woman had a strange look on her face. "Dear you must be confused. I assure you, the Wallace's child..."
Then she trailed off suddenly. "How old are you?"
"Fifteen..." Genny answered hesitantly.
"Going on sixteen?" She finished.
Genny was getting seriously creeped out now, she saw Will tense up. "How did you know that?"
The woman was deathly still and hands were shaking. Genny wondered if she should run away or run for an ambulance. What a yellow-green situation.
"Genevieve?" She asked, voice cracking.
Genny nodded slowly and unsurely but the old lady held a hand to her mouth and cried out. "Oh! They told me you had passed away, I don't understand."
"I don't understand either, who are you?" Genny asked.
The woman reached forward to hug her and all of a sudden Genny was overcome by mushy blue-pink and soft blacks. She almost cried, it was so strong.
"I'm your nanna!"
"My what?"
The woman smiled dearly. "Your grandmother, come come, we have so much to talk about."
A few minutes later Genny's grandmother, or nanna, had brought the three of them inside the church near the graveyard and made hot chocolate to warm up.
"I swear I left you kids alone for five minutes and all of a sudden everyone has some sort of long lost relative they never knew about." Abby marveled, taking a sip, thankful for the free sugar. "Anything else I should know about?"
"We're dating now too." Will said happily, which was followed by Abby promptly spitting the liquid back into her cup.
"Alright!" Nanna said after rejoining them, she glanced over an Genny happily. "You've grown up so much since the last time I saw you, look at you now you're gorgeous."
Genny blushed. "Thank you."
"Now I'm sure you want to know what happened to Arthur and Florence." She continued, cutting straight to the point.
Genny nodded, and she continued. "Now I don't know that much. I just know after you were born a lot of bad men kept showing up at their house. They tried moving a few times as well, but they just kept coming. Until suddenly you disappeared."
Genny figured this was about the time her first memories at the Lab were created, her only first memories in fact.
Nanna held a hand to her chest. "We thought you were dead, years passed and there was no sign of you. Your parents...they tried a lot of things to get you back. They wouldn't tell me what, but seemed to know who had done it. They wouldn't tell me that either, Florence was my daughter and we fought a lot about that. I always helped them out though, with money for lawyers and places to stay when things got rough. Until-"
She choked up slightly. "Until one day I got a call from the police telling me that they- that they'd been murdered. And I..I was just so angry I knew it had something to do with you disappearing but she hadn't told me enough about what happened for me to do anything about it."
Genny felt surprisingly moved. She wiped a few tears out of her eye. "So they cared about me...? They never stopped looking...?"
Nanna's eyes widened. "Of course, "she put a hand on Genny's shoulder Sincerely. "You meant the world to them."
Genny was crying more than she would to admit at the moment. Will came over and put an arm around her shoulder and Genny soaked in his calm cerulean vibes.
"Where were you though?" Nanna asked her. "How did you survive on your own when you were little."
Will glanced at Genny as they both wondered how to break it to her.
"The...organization that kidnapped me I guess...is known within our community for experimenting on human beings." Genny said slowly. "Mostly children."
Nanna's hand went to her mouth. "Oh my God, that's terrible. Did they do anything bad to you? Are you okay?"
"We'll get to that, but I'm currently living with a bunch of other kids like me in a safe place. We came out her to stop my parents from funding them but I guess...that's already been settled." Genny realized. "I guess we must have gotten an old list."
"But...experimentation!" Nanna was still grasping the idea. "I mean you look...normal?"
"I have the ability to sense people's emotions when I touch them, and I also have synesthesia so everyone's feeling have colors, and my eyes usually turn that color. Basically I feel colors and my eye will change ocordingly." Genny explained.
"Like right now I'm calm, I think is what you told me blue was." Will explained, taking her hand in his and staring into her eyes.
Will grinned suddenly. "My girlfriend's a mood ring."
He shrugged off his jacket, tied in around his waist and spread out his wings. It was a pretty roomy church so he had plenty of room. "I have wings."
Nanna looked amazed. "That amazing! If this organization is doing such incredible things why hasn't anyone heard out it?"
"With all due respect miss, it was very painful, and not of consent. A lot of the kids there have a lot worse mutations than us and suffer for it. Not a lot of them make it. What they're doing is illegal and disgusting, not amazing." Will explained. "And I think we're a trending topic on the news nowadays if you tune into the right channel."
Nanna nodded. "I see, that is horrible. I..."
She glanced at Genny and just shook her head in amazement. "I'm just so glad we met."
"Me too." Genny smiled back.
Abby, who had been watching the transaction with interest suddenly interrupted. "I hate to say this guys but we have to go. I need to be back to take more kids out. We can come back and visit after this whole ordeal is over though."
"Oh already." Nanna said sourly.
"Do you have a phone?" Genny asked, "I can give you my number so we can talk."
She did, and they exchanged information before hugging and crying a bit more before they finally had to leave.
"Well you can call Mr. Wales and tell him to cross this one off the list." Will said, taking hold of Genny's hand once they were driving.
Genny was still wiping away goodbye tears. "Yeah, what a night."
