Chapter Ten - A New Friend

As Talia rehearsed for the Cultural Festival with Class 1-A, Pan made his way to the Faculty dorms where Mirio was helping Eri set up in a room. As Pan entered the room, Eri immediately became scared and hid behind Mirio's leg. Mirio tries to comfort her.

Mirio: It's okay, Eri! Pan's a friend!

Despite this scene, Pan couldn't help but chuckle. Mirio then spoke to Pan while Eri still hid behind his leg.

Mirio: I'm sorry, Pan.

Pan: It's quite all right, my friend. I understand that my outward appearance would me most frightening to a child.

Pan then got on one knee and held out his hand to the frightened Eri. He then reassured Eri with a warm smile.

Pan: Perfect friendship is the friendship of men who are good, and alike in excellence; for these wish well alike to each other qua good, and they are good in themselves.

As Pan quoted Aristotle, Eri began to see Pan not as a dangerous threat, but a kind gentlemen. Despite her inner fears, Eri reached out to Pan's hand.

Pan: There we are. I do not mean you any harm, my little friend.

Mirio was surprised at how quickly Eri was able to warm up to Pan. Ever since he saved her, the only people Eri had interacted with was himself and Midoriya along with Aizawa.

Mirio: Wow! You're a natural!

Pan: I've spent enough time with people to know what to say. Mirio, my deepest condolences for your loss. Sir Nighteye was a splendid Hero.

Mirio: I appreciate the kind words, Pan. Sir Nighteye was one heck of a Hero. At least he died doing what he loved.

Pan: I don't mean to pry, but you were one of the last to see him before his passing. If I may ask, what were his final words?

As Pan asked that, Mirio took a moment to think on that. Mirio remembered the day Sir Nightteye died vividly. He had given his life to help save Eri from Overhaul's clutches. His sacrifice saved her life as well as the lives of countless others.

Mirio: He...he told me to keep smiling...no matter what. He told everyone in the room that a world without smiles and humor...has no bright future.

As Mirio recounted Nighteye's final words, Pan took a moment to think of a fitting eulogy for him. He remembered seeing the shared grief for Sir Nighteye's loss at his funeral. It didn't take long for Pan to come up with a eulogy fitting for Sir Nighteye.

Pan: And so a Hero of unmatched character is lost to us all. His watchful eyes shall now rest for eternity. Let the Gods of Olympus see this man as a Hero worthy of recognition by old and young alike. In his sacrifice, a bright future of smile and humor. Let us work to see that vision made into reality now and forever.

Mirio was awestruck by Pan's eulogy for Sir Nighteye.

Mirio: Whoa....

Pan: I only wish I came up with that at his funeral. It would've been more appropriate. Better late than never I suppose.

Pan then pondered on the eulogy he made for Sir Nighteye. He had never met Sir Nighteye. The only frame of reference he had was Midoriya and Mirio as well as All Might himself. Despite this, he knew that Sir Nighteye was a Hero worthy of his respect. He then spoke with Eri.

Pan: Are you well, young Eri?

Eri was silent for a moment. She didn't know what to say as her timid nature kept her from saying much. Pan simply smiled.

Pan: It is quite all right, little one. You have nothing to fear from me. Despite my...unique appearance, I am but a simple soul with a thirst for adventure. I know you've been through...unfortunate circumstances. But you need not suffer alone. As the late Sir Nighteye said, a world without smiles and humor has no bright future.

Pan smiled towards Eri as he sought to comfort her. Pan knew Eri had been through untold terrors under Overhaul. Despite this, Pan sought to comfort Eri in anyway he can.

Pan: A smile can go a long way, little Eri. A smile can push away even the darkest clouds. Never let the darkness of others ever dampen your smile. It is all too common when pain and misery becomes our commonality. But it need not be this way. In the face of such things, a smile can make all the difference.

Eri was speechless as Pan pats her on the head. Pan's warm smile seemed to have brought some measure of comfort to Eri. Despite all she had been through, Pan's reassurance brought on some hope. Though in her mind, the shadow of Overhaul lingered over her like a dark cloud.

Pan: Now if you all excuse me, I have my teaching duties. Till next time, my friends.

Pan then left the room and went back to Class 1-A to look over some papers. As he did, the wise Satyr began to ponder what had happened. A simple smile fell on his face.

Pan: Time is the wisest of all things that are; for it brings everything to light. Hhm. Such wise words indeed.

Pan smiled to himself as he hummed a tune to himself. As Pan pondered on the philosophy of his Greek contemporaries. All Pan could do was smile in honor of Sir Nighteye's final words.
