THE STATUARY CHAMBER
You have not yet reached the lowest level of the castle. You will in due time.
What you see before you are tombs. Every sand castle is also somewhat of a graveyard.
Some are of my loved ones: if you look closely, you will recognize their faces. They are quite lifelike, or at least resemble the memory I have of them. Should you return to this room six months or a year from now, you will undoubtedly notice a few slight changes to their features. This one will look younger, that one more sullen, and yet another slightly more blurred than the time before, due to the slow erosion of memory. Some of them, whose physiognomy was beginning to elude me, I have given new eyes, new lips or a wider forehead.
Do not go over to the small cluster of tombs at the back of the crypt: there is no point. They belong to old friends whose appearance, with time, I have permanently forgotten. While there is no good reason to keep these faceless statues, I have never been able to bring myself to dispose of them.
If you go anyway, make them whatever faces you desire.
