Chapter 10: You Ought to be in Pictures

Kyle belongs to my co-writer LillianDuncan

It was a school day at Beacon Academy and the students were waiting for class to begin. Jenni was flipping through a magazine when something caught her eye.

"Hey Ruby doesn't this girl look familiar to you?"

Ruby leaned over to look at the picture. It was a girl with rabbit ears holding a camera, "hey yeah that's Velvet Scarlatina. She used to be a student here."

"Says here she won a photography contest," Jenni said, "why don't we go talk to her after school?"

"Sounds cool," Ruby said, then turning to her other friend she added, "Hey Blake do you want to come?"

The cat girl shook her head, "no thanks I want to study a bit. I know our math test isn't until tomorrow but I want to be ready."

Ruby shook her head, "sometimes Blake I really don't understand you."

Over at Haven Academy Velvet was being interviewed by several reporters, but she was quite shy and didn't like all the attention.

"So Velvet how does it feel to have won such a big contest?" One reporter asked.

"G-great I guess," Velvet stuttered.

"So do you think you'll keep photographing landscapes?" Another asked.

Velvet nodded a bit, "yes I quite enjoy it."

"There she is," Ruby said running up to the school with Jenni on her heels.

"Where do you think you're going?" Cinder asked suddenly.

"Cinder what are you doing here?" Ruby asked. But then she realized that the raven haired girl was wearing the same black uniform shirt and skirt as Velvet. "Wait you go here?!"

"Uh huh. And the headmaster put me in charge of making sure only reporters and Haven students get past here."

"Can you at least get us an autograph?" Ruby asked.

"I just said I can't!" Cinder snapped, "now please go back to your own school."

"Rubes maybe she's right," Jenni spoke up.

Cinder smiled, "I'm glad you understand Jenni."

"Jen what the heck?! You're supposed to be on my side!"

But before this argument could continue the three girls heard the reporters getting louder and louder. Velvet shrank back a bit as the people closed in.

"Oh no. I gotta help her. See you guys later," Cinder said running over to help her classmate.

————————————————————
Later that afternoon Velvet was standing on the edge of a cliff snapping pictures of the sunset.

"Nice work Anesidora," she said patting her camera.

Suddenly the cliff gave out from under her and Velvet went sliding. But before she could hurt herself she felt someone grab her arm. She looked up to see none other then Adam.

"Y-You saved me. Thank you," Velvet said sweetly.

Adam pulled her up to safety, "just try and be more careful. Ok?"

The rabbit girl nodded. "But who are you?"

"Never mind that," Adam said, "I am glad to find you though Velvet Scarlatina. I think your photography is first rate."

He placed his hand on her camera and a wilting rose emblem appeared on the lens. Adam had seen that Velvet was about to reach her maximum energy output and he was ready to steal it for his queen.

Velvet's eyes glazed over as the spell took control, "thank you. You know suddenly I'm getting an idea for a new subject to photograph."

————————————————————
The next morning Ruby was reading the newspaper when something caught her eye.

"Hey it says here Velvet is looking for people that would be willing to be photographed by her. Wow modeling! That sounds awesome!"

"Who would want you as a model?" Kyle spoke up from across the table.

Kyle was Ruby and Yang's younger cousin and he was staying with them for a little while.

"A lot of people that's who!" Ruby snapped.

She then stuck her tongue out at her cousin and headed upstairs to her room. Zwei looked up at her as she walked in.

"Oh Ruby just in time. I have something for you." He did several backflips in the air which caused a strange flat electronic object to materialize and land on the bed.

"It's called a scroll. It's a special communication device just for the sailor scouts. I also gave one to Cinder and Blake."

"Totally cool!" Ruby said picking it up and pressing the button that looked like Blake's mercury symbol. "I'm gonna call Blake right away and tell her all about this modeling gig."

A couple rings of the scroll later and Blake's face appeared on the scroll screen, "hey Ruby what's going on are you ok?"

"I'm fine I just want to tell you about this modeling gig Velvet is doing. Doesn't it sound cool?"

The cat girl sighed, "I guess but I don't really see why you needed to call me on the scroll to tell me that. We're supposed to use these only if we have a sailor scout emergency. I'll call you later ok? I'm trying to find information that might lead us to the moon princess."

With that she hung up and the screen went dark.

"Moon princess? What's she talking about Zwei?" Ruby asked.

Zwei sighed, "I told you back when you were first picked to be Sailor Moon. Your main job as a sailor scout is to protect the universe but it's also to protect the Princess of the Moon."

"Well do you know who she is?"

The corgi thought for a moment, "oh it's...its...I don't remember. I've been here a long trying to find her but I just can't remember who she is. I'm hoping I'll know her when I see her."

Ruby stood up and stretched, "well I'm gonna head to the arcade. Wanna come?"

Zwei sighed but hopped into Ruby's backpack.

The girl pet his head and smiled at him before heading down to the arcade.

Once there she told Jaune all about the modeling job she was hoping to get and what Kyle had told her.

"Hey don't worry about it," Jaune told her, "if this is something you really want to do then go for it."

"You really think so?" Ruby asked.

Jaune nodded.

"Well I know first hand how hard modeling can be," Oscar spoke up.

Ruby turned to the other young man, "and what do you know about modeling Oscar?"

Oscar turned to her, "I happen to know plenty. I once took a job as a model for a farming magazine to get some extra money. And I can tell you that modeling is not always as glamorous as it sounds. You gotta get up early, maintain a certain weight, and do exactly what the photographers tell you."

The redhead scoffed, "as if I'm going to listen to you compost king!"

The young man's cheeks burned with embarrassment, "I'm just trying to help. Go ahead and make a fool of yourself and see if I care!"

Ruby rolled her eyes and stomped out of the arcade.

"Why are you always so rough on Ruby, Oscar?" Jaune asked.

Oscar sighed, "I don't know. Whenever I'm around her I get this weird feeling that I just can't explain."

——————————————————————

Later that afternoon Ruby and Yang were standing outside the house by the mailbox. Ruby had practically dragged her big sister outside to wait for the mail with her.

"Sis what if you don't make it? I mean I'm sure there are other ways you can be a model." Yang said

Ruby looked at her, "my dear sister Yang are you implying that you don't think I have what it takes to model?"

"No it's not that it's just-well-"

"Hey girls got some mail for you," the mailman said as he drove up and put the letters into Ruby's outstretched hands.

The girl gleefully flipped through each piece of mail until she found a card with her name on it, "I made it in! I made it in!"

She began jumping up and down and accidentally dropped the rest of the mail.

Yang sighed and reached down to pick up the fallen letters when something caught her eye, "hey I got one too."

"You?" Ruby asked in shock, "but you didn't even sign up."

Yang shrugged, "maybe Velvet wants as many models as she can get."

"Well whatever the reason it says that we have to be at the community center at 9 am tomorrow and we have to bring a bathing suit," her younger sister said. She then snapped her fingers, "hey I just remembered that I bought one last year let me go get it."

She raced upstairs but not five minutes later Yang heard her screaming. She opened the door to Ruby's room and saw her holding a red one piece that was covered in moth holes.

Yang sighed, "don't worry sis. We have until tomorrow. I'm sure we can fix this."

Ruby smiled and her silver eyes lit up, "thanks sis. You're the best."

———————————————————————

Then next morning the sisters made it to the community center and went to register with the other models. But Ruby couldn't believe her eyes when she saw how many people there were.

"Don't be intimidated. This will be fun," Yang assured her.

Velvet then came on stage and told her models what they would need to do for her photo shoot. But she seemed harsh and rude, not at all like the quiet shy girl that been interviewed only days before.

As the models all went to get changed Zwei poked his head out of Ruby's backpack and began pawing her arm.

The redhead looked down at the dog and sighed, "hey sis you go on ahead and get changed. I'm gonna sit here for a second."

Yang shrugged but walked off.

"What is it?" Ruby asked.

"Don't you think it's odd how many people Velvet called here to be photographed today?" Zwei asked.

Ruby shrugged, "I guess so. Why do you think there's something wrong?"

The corgi sighed, "I don't know. But I would feel a lot better if you called Blake and Cinder."

The redhead nodded and pulled out her new scroll communicator. One call later and the other two sailor scouts were on their way and Ruby was heading to the dressing room.

Once in there she found Yang, who was wearing a two piece golden bikini, styling her hair and Jenni, who was wearing a strange one piece suit with short sleeves and material that went down to her thighs like shorts, applying makeup.

Ruby quickly changed into her suit but she was still feeling self conscious. Despite her and her big sister's best efforts they couldn't repair the moth holes, so each one was now covered with a bow.

Zwei climbed out of Ruby's bag and motioned to her with his head, indicating that he was going to go scope things out.

Ruby nodded back to him before sitting down at the vanity to get her fixed up.

The corgi headed to the main hall and saw five girls about to get their picture taken.

"Ok now give me big smiles ladies!" Velvet said before holding up her camera. She pressed the shutter to take the picture and the lens opened before releasing a bright light that engulfed the girls. They were then sucked into the camera.

Zwei gasped, "oh no! I have to tell Ruby!"

—————————————————————

"And you're sure you saw this?" Ruby asked once her corgi companion got back.

He nodded, "positive. Velvet is working with the negaverse. That's what this whole competition is for."

The silver eyed girl sighed, "well Cinder and Blake should be here soon. It's my turn to get my picture taken so I'll try my best to not get captured.

With that she scooped Zwei in her arms and followed Jenni and Yang to where they would be getting their pictures done.

Unfortunately she had gotten there too late. Her friends were already posing for the picture.

"No stop!" Ruby yelled as Velvet took the picture trapping Jenni and Yang in the camera.

The rabbit girl laughed and turned to Ruby, "you want your picture done now?"

The redhead put her hands on her hips, "don't even think about it! And let my friends and all the other models go too! Or you're gonna get it!"

"Get what?" Velvet asked

Ruby held her hand up, "Get this! Moon prism power!"

Thankfully she had managed to bring her locket so she was able to transform into Sailor Moon.

But Velvet didn't seem impressed, "so now do you want your picture done?"

She pressed the shutter on her camera multiple times which sent out beams of light that were trying to capture the heroine.

But as her attacks began to get more aggressive, Adam, who had established a telepathic link with Velvet earlier, could feel that her energy was reaching its maximum.

"Let's give this energy physical form," he said snapping his fingers.

Velvet felt her camera grow red hot and she dropped it on the floor.

All of the energy spilled out of the lens and turned into a strange ivory skinned woman with long black hair. What was even weirder though was that she had two extra eyes on the palms of her hands.

Velvet collapsed as her energy was depleted.

"Now give me a smile for your final portrait," the creature said.

"Hey if you're taking her picture then we want in," said a voice.

Both Sailor Moon and the creature turned to see Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars standing in the doorway.

"Am I glad to see you two," Sailor Moon said in relief.

But she wasn't watching her back and the monster took this opportunity to try and take her picture.

"Watch out!" Zwei shouted

Then heroine turned to see her corgi friend jump into the line of fire and be sucked into the monster's lens.

"No Zwei!" Sailor Moon shouted.

Sailor Mercury held her hands up, "Mercury bubbles blast!" Purple bubbles appeared around her and the heroine sent them towards the photography monster. When the bubbles popped they trapped the monster in a black shadowy fog.

Sailor Mars then held up a piece of paper with a charm written on it intended to ward off evil, "I call upon the power of Mars. Fire balls charge!"

She threw it at the monster but the charm was quickly captured in a beam of light. This also lit up the surrounding area and allowed the creature to take a picture of the other two scouts and pull them into her lens as well.

"No! Mars! Mercury!" Sailor Moon shouted.

The creature laughed, "oh don't be so sad sailor girl. It's your turn for a picture.

The heroine looked up and noticed that the makeshift photography studio that had been set up had mirrors for walls.

"That's it." She said to herself, "ok. You win. You can take my picture."

The monster held her hand out and was about to snap the picture. Sailor Moon then made sure that she was positioned right in front of the mirror. When the beam of light came toward her she jumped out of the way causing the monster to zap itself. The remaining sailor scout then finished the job with a throw of her tiara right at the monster's lens.

"Moon tiara magic!"

The monster evaporated into dust, everyone was freed from the camera, and Velvet's energy was returned to her. Sailor Moon had once again saved the day.

Meanwhile, in his hidden hideout in the woods of Vale, Adam felt his connection to Velvet sever.

"What? What happened?" he asked in alarm.

A wicked giggle interrupted his thoughts.

"Still trying this plan Adam?" Neo asked as she appeared which made a sound like breaking glass, "you have the same problem that Mercury had. You know maybe you need a woman's touch to help you."

"I don't need your help," Adam insisted, "I just did what Mercury couldn't."

"Oh and what's that?"

Adam turned to her with a cocky grin, "I had two of the scouts captured thanks to that girl that was under my spell. That proves that they aren't invincible. So you can tell Queen Salem that I have everything under control."

Neo scoffed but disappeared. When she returned to Salem's domain she felt someone grab her hand.

"Adam is a fool for not listening to you my love." The person said.

Neo nodded, "I know. He'll fail soon enough then I'll be Queen Salem's top general. I just need to find his weak point and exploit it. And trust me...I will."
