The Eyes of a Stranger: Part 7

That evening Marianna was having trouble getting Reese to go to sleep. He had been so excited after seeing that strange man in the park. If it were any other situation she would have been paranoid about a stranger. Kids were getting snatched every day, and she didn't want her son to be one of them. Somehow she knew right from the start that this man didn't want to hurt her son. Something in his eyes told her that. It was something so familiar, even though she was sure that she had never seen this man before.

"Reese, for the last time it's time for bed," she said and gently took his arm and led him over to his bed.

"But I'm not tired, Momma," he said but then a yawn escaped his mouth.

"Of course you're not," she said with a little laugh. "Now get into bed."

"Okay, Momma," he said and grabbed his stuffed white tiger and crawled onto his bed. She put the covers over him, and sat down at his bedside. She then saw something shiny in his hand.

"Reese, sweety, what's that?"

"Just a coin, Momma," he said as he turned it all around to watch the light shine off it.

"Where did you get it?" she asked.

"That nice man gave it to me," he said. "My lucky coin."

"Can I see it?" she asked.

"Okay," he said and held it up. "Isn't it neat, Momma."

"Yes," she said as it dropped into her hand.

Suddenly a strange feeling came over her. All at once she felt hot, hotter than she had ever been, but with fear and pain mixed in. She could hear many angry voices screaming out. "Kill the demon!" and other things she couldn't quite make out.

She was bound and trapped seeing strand of red hair flowing down over her face. She looked down to see a slightly swollen belly. She looked up and saw a man dressed in a fanciful suit, but the style looked very old, a couple of hundred years.

She heard the man say something. "Pledge your allegiance, Laela, and you will live... as my servant," he said and smirked.

"Go to hell!" she heard herself scream. Suddenly flames surrounded her, and she felt herself being burned alive, screaming one man's name with her dying breath. "Mike!" she screamed out.

She dropped the coin onto the blanket and the vision left her as quickly as it had come.

"Momma, what's wrong?" Reese said with concern. He picked up the coin and laid it in his open palm. "Coin bad."

"No sweety, Momma's alright, but did that man tell you his name?"

"Uhah, it's Mike. Isn't that a cool name?" Reese said, then she remembered that was the name me had given her.

"Sure, sweety, now you do to sleep," She said as she tucked him in. She laid the coin on his nightstand and just stared at it for a few seconds. There were secrets behind that old coin. Either that or she was losing her mind. She tried her best to hide her feelings from Reese. She didn't want to scare the boy more than she already had. She gave him a kiss goodnight and slowly rose to her feet.

She was shaking a little as she left the room and turned out the light. She went into the kitchen to get a glass of water. All she could think about was that flash. The woman she saw felt like it was her, but not her. And she called out the name of the man that her son encountered that day. She couldn't explain it, but now she was sure she knew him, but how? In some ways she never wanted to find out.

This is the end of chapter three, but the next chapter will involve a time jump of one week in the past. The mission that Marianna is being recruited for will be explained.
