Chapter 8: Two Years In
"All these voices in my head get loud
I wish that I could shut them out
I'm sorry that I let you down
Let you down"
Now
Cries echoed the bathroom as the sound of water ran. Clara's hands harshly rubbed against each other as the blood ran down the sink. She started to use her nails to get the dry blood off, another choked sob escaped her trembling lips.
She let out a frustrated scream as she shut the water off, she gave up. The blood wasn't coming off. No matter how hard she tried, the blood would still be there.
She gripped the edge of the wooden sink as she looked at the sink that had blood over it along with her hands that were stained with some blood.
"Just make it stop." She whispered as she squeezed her eyes shut.
But that didn't help. She saw the dead eyes of George looking at her.
"Please make it stop." She whimpered and opened her eyes again, looking up at the ceiling.
"Clara open the door." The sound of Leo's voice was heard on the other side of the door as he tried to open it, but it was locked.
"Why isn't she opening it?" Minho questioned next to him as he gave a few knocks on the door.
"Move. Clara open up!" Gally's fist was met with the door.
"Everything will be fine. Just let me in." Gally told her as he tried to open the door.
"I tried that already." Leo told him.
"Shut up shank." Gally groaned.
"No, it's not going to be fine." Clara's whole body shook as tears continued to stream down her face as she whimpered.
"He's dead...Stephens dead."
2 Hours Before the Incident
Stephen leaned against the tree as he watched Clara place the seven blue Ipomoea flowers on George's grave. This was something every glader knew Clara did. She would bring only those flowers to his grave every now and then.
"Ready?" Clara asked as she walked over to him. Stephen gave her a nod as the two headed out of the dead heads.
"I better get back to helping Gally out. If I don't. I'll never hear the end of it." Stephen told Clara as he started to walk away.
"End of what?" Clara questioned as he turned his head back as he continued to walk.
"Exactly." Stephen smiled widely before facing forward once. Stephen folded his sleeves before pushing them up his arms as he made his way to the rest of the builders.
Gally was hammering away, sweat dripping down his forehead as he turned his head to Stephen. "You're late." Gally told him.
"I was with Clara." Stephen told him honestly as he grabbed a few planks of wood.
"You know, just because you're with Clara, doesn't mean you're getting away with it." Hank pointed his tool at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Eh." Gally shrugged as he went back to hammering.
"Eh? What do you mean 'eh'?" Hank looked at his friend with wide eyes and Gally shrugged again.
"I don't know." Gally murmured and Stephen's lips slowly turned into a smile and Henry glanced between Gally and Hank.
"Yes you do." Hank set his tool down and rested his hands on the planks below him as he looked at Gally.
Stephen and Henry stopped what they were doing and glanced at each other, the two smiling slightly at the situation.
"I mean, he's with Clara. So, I really don't care." Gally looked at Hank.
"So, if I hang out with her then I can be late too?" Hank questioned and Gally gave him a look.
"Of course not. I would whack you with whatever Henry is building over there..." Gally turned his head to Henry, having no idea what he was building, pointing at the kid he asked; "what are you building again?"
"A chair." Henry answered.
"Perfect." Gally smiled widely before looking back to Hank.
"Wait-what?!" Hank exclaimed. "That doesn't make any sense because Stephen-"
"It makes perfect sense. Because one. Clara would question why the shuck you're suddenly hanging out with her and two I wouldn't let it slide." Gally cut him off, a proud smile on his lips.
"Ok, but-"
"Can we work in silence?" Henry asked as he was sawing away.
"I like that idea." Gally snapped his fingers, before going back to work...in silence. Stephen grabbed a few nails before leaning over to Hanks ear.
"It's also because Gally likes me more then you." He smirked.
"No he doesn't!" Hank whined like a child.
"Shuck it Hank." Gally's voice broke up.
"It was Stephen-"
"Quiet!"
Stephen smiled widely as Hank looked at him with an unamused look. Stephen put his hand up to his face, his thumb touching his nose while he wiggled his fingers.
1 Hour Before the Incident
"Have any two's?" Clint asked.
"Goldfish." Clara replied.
"It's Go Fish." He looked at her as he picked a card up from the pile.
"Goldfish sounds more fun." She shrugged. "Got any 7s?" She asked.
"Goldfish." He replied and she smiled as she picked up a card.
It was another slow day in the glade for Medjacks yet again. They've played so many card games that their fingers started to hurt from messing with the cards. But that was their thing, mostly Clara. Card games were just life.
"Help. Help. Help." Leo's voice broke their thoughts as he entered the room with panic in his eyes.
"What's wrong?" Clint asked and stood up from his chair.
Leo held his finger up as a small amount of blood was dripping down. Both the Medjacks gave him a look which caused Leo to panic.
"Oh, my god I'm done for." Leo said and Clara snorted.
"You're fine. Sit down." Clint gestured to his chair he was sitting down in.
"Ok. Ok." Leo sat down and looked up at him as Clint grabbed a small bandaid.
"How many stitches am I going to need? Three? Oh, my god. You're going to have to chop off my finger." Leo looked at him with wide eyes.
Clint went over and simply wrapped the bandaid around his finger. Leo looked from his bandaged finger to the boy standing in front of him.
"That's it." Clint said.
"Really?" Leo asked and breathed out with relief before standing up. "Thanks."
"I take it you don't like blood?" Clint asked and Leo nodded. "Not one bit."
"Well, it's a good thing you're not a girl Leo, every month with the-"
"Ew. Clara. Stop." He shook his head and quickly headed out.
"Oh, don't be a baby. It's Mother Nature!" She shouted after him then laughed while Clint smiled.
30 Minutes Before the Incident
"Knock it off!" Clara shouted as she laughed.
"Nope. Say you give up." Gally flipped her to the ground as she tried to get up, whacking him as he held her down.
"Never! You strange eyebrow boy!" Clara whacked him again and he laughed.
"Using the eyebrow insults I see. Very clever." Gally shook his head then let her go, Clara gave him one last hit before sitting up.
"Alright, alright. We're done." He put his hands up in surrender.
Clara stood up and headed away from him but a pull on her leg sent her flying on her stomach. An 'oof' leaving her lips. She groaned and looked up seeing Gally standing above her with his arms crossed over his chest, a wide smile on his lips.
"I lied." He said and Clara shook her head before smiling.
"Oh, Captain Gally. You simply left your ship left open to sink yet again." She spoke with such modesty.
"What do you mean?" He questioned, confused by her comment.
Clara didn't answer him. Well, didn't answer in words. She grabbed one of his legs with both of her hands and pulled, Gally instantly flying in the air and falling on his back.
"Should've known." Gally coughed as the wind was knocked out of him.
"Should've!" Nick said loudly in the difference, loving that Clara knocked Gally on his ass.
"Shut up Nick." Gally grumbled as he just laid there.
"Come on." Clara was now the one standing above him and held her hand out for him as he took it. Clara pulled him up as the two smiled at each other, shoving one another slightly as they headed in a new direction.
15 Minutes Before the Incident
Stephen tapped on the table in front of him as he thought, ignoring the other voices around him.
"Can I have your biscuit?" Nick asked.
"What no. You cannot have my biscuit." Clara looked at him, pulling her plate closer to her.
"Leo, can I have your biscuit?" Nick turned to look at the boy.
"I'm pretty sure you know my answer." Leo stated.
"You are going to say yes?" Nick asked slowly.
"It's no. The answer is no! And before your shank ass asks me. I'm saying no as well." Gally declared.
"Well then." Nick mumbled.
"We haven't tried the box." Stephen suddenly spoke up and the table group looked at him.
"What?" Gally asked.
"Getting out of this place. We haven't tried the box." Stephen told him and looked at the others.
"I-I don't know Stephen. That doesn't seem like a good idea." Clara looked at him.
"We have to try." Stephen stood from his seat and headed out.
"Now?" Gally asked, surprised.
"Stephen." Clara quickly moved her plate away from her as she stood up and followed after him. "Stephen, come on!"
Nick watched her leave and quickly grabbed the biscuit from her plate and shoved it in his mouth.
"Really, dude?" Leo raised an eyebrow at him.
Clara followed after Stephen and saw him open up the box and hope in. Gally and a few other gladers were following behind, not knowing what exactly what was going on.
"Stephen. Come on." Clara mumbled.
"We have to try Clara." He looked up at her before looking around the box.
"See anything?" A glader asked.
"Stephen get out of there." Gally told him, this was stupid.
"What in the bloody hell is going on here?" Newt asked, limping over to the group.
"Stephen is trying to see if there's a way of getting out of here through the box." Nick told Newt as he was eating Clara's biscuit.
"I think I see something." Stephen said as a sudden click was sounded along with the alarm going off. The gladers around the box immediately covered their ears from the sound.
"Stephen, get out of there." Clara quickly went over and looked down at him as he stood in the middle of the box and looked back up to her. All sound coming to a stop and it was silent once again.
Stephen smiled up at her as he nodded. "I'm fine. I'm fine." He took a deep breath and suddenly the covers of the box automatically slammed itself shut, Newt immediately grabbed Clara's arm and pulled her back.
"What's happening? Stephen!" Nick shouted as a loud engine sound filled throughout the glade before they heard Stephen start to scream along with banging inside the box.
The box was moving itself, going up and down harshly, sending Stephen flying all over it. "Someone help me!" Stephen screamed.
"Open it up! Open it up!" Gally shouted as he went over and tried to open it up along with Nick and a few others.
"It's locked shut!" Nick looked to Gally worriedly before he started to hit the top of the box.
"Stephen!" He yelled.
"Please get me out!" Stephen begged as the box continued to fly up and down, continuing to slam Stephen everywhere. Gally, Nick and a few other gladers that were trying to get the box opened slowly moved away.
Then it was quiet. No one said or did anything as they just stared at the box. They were all just waiting. Clara didn't even notice Minho was now standing next to her, Newt being on the other side of her as he had a hand on her arm.
The box quickly opened and no one dared to move. They swore they could hear each other's hearts beating at the wait of anticipation. That's when a pair of hands gripped the outside of the box.
"Stephen." Clara quickly ran over and dropped on her knees as she grabbed his hand, him holding onto her tightly. He had blood running down from his temple as he looked at her.
"Pull me out. Pull me out!" Stephen begged as Clara started to pull on him...that's when the box stared to make that engine sound again, Stephen being pulled down as something was pulling him down.
"I'm stuck! I'm stuck!" Stephen cried out, Nick being on the other side of Clara, trying to get Stephen out as well.
"Please pull me out! Please!" Stephen begged once more.
A horrific crunch sounded as Stephen screamed in pain, his grip tightening on Clara and Nick as the other gladers panicked behind them. "You're going to be just fine Stephen." Nick reassured him as he pulled harder.
Another crunch sounded and Stephen screamed harder along with a gruesome ripping noise. Stephen choked for air as his grip started to loosen from the two.
"Stephen." Clara looked at him as she used her other hand to try and pull his waist up but she immediately retracted her hand once she felt something wet. Her hand was now coated in blood.
That's when it all stopped.
No more shouting, no more bones breaking, no more of Stephen's cries, and no more of Stephen's breathing.
"What happened? What happened?" Nick repeated as him and Clara continued to hold onto Stephen. Nick didn't look down at the box, however, Clara did. Her eyes were glued to what was in the box.
The lower half of Stephen was just laying in the box. He was torn in half from the waist down. Or waist up? She couldn't decide.
"Is he okay?" Nick asked as other gladers got closer, looking to Clara then to the others.
"Don't look Nick. Keep your eyes on me." Fry told his friend softly.
Minho immediately grabbed Clara, her hand easily leaving Stephen's as she was turned away from the scene and met with his chest.
"Don't look. Don't look." Minho repeated to her. But he already know what she saw. He led her away from the box, keeping her close to him while Newt trailed behind.
"What do I do?" Nick asked, as he continued to keep his grip on Stephen. Doing what Fry told him, looking away. The poor shank not even knowing that he was holding up a corpse.
There were only a few gladers left. The ones who stayed were a few baggers, Gally, Hank, and Alby. Alby was the one who answered his question after taking a hard swallow.
"Just let go Nick."
