Chapter 32: Let Me Tell You a Story

"Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us"

"No. There's gotta be another way." Thomas made his way back to the table where the others were around at. Clara groaned at his answer while Gally looked at him. "Like what? You've seen the building. She's our only way in."

"You really think she's going to help us?" Thomas asked.

"I don't plan on asking her permission." Gally gave him a look.

"Am I missing something here?" Brenda spoke from where she was sitting. "This is the same girl who betrayed us, correct? The same dick?" She asked and Aaron snapped his fingers as he pointed at her, giving Thomas a look.

"I like her." Gally glanced to Brenda, pointing his thumb in her direction.

"Thomas." Clara spoke up as she saw him pacing slightly. "What's going on?"

"What? You afraid your little girlfriend is going to get hurt?" Newt asked. Clara looked to Newt in shock from his tone but what he said as well. Newt stood up straight, looking at Thomas. "Hm? This isn't just about rescuing Minho, is it?"

"Newt, what are you talking about?" Thomas looked at his friend.

"Teresa. She's the only reason Minho is missing in the first place. Now we finally have an opportunity to get him back and what-you don't want to because of her!" Newt got closer to Thomas, backing him up to a wall. "Because deep down you still care about her, don't you? Just admit it."

"Newt I-"

Newt grabbed his shoulders and shoved him in the wall. "DONT LIE TO ME! Don't.  Lie. To. Me." The group watched in shock, not seeing this side of him before. Newt seemed to realize what he did and let go of Thomas, stepping away.

"Sorry." He whispered to Thomas then turned to the others. "I'm sorry." He apologized and walked out of the room.

Clara who noticed Newt hold onto the same arm once more knew what was happening. Newt was infected. This may be just one sign, but Carter would burst out in anger as well. Aaron looked to Clara, having a feeling what it was as well. The two gave each other a knowing look before Clara soon followed after Newt.

Clara slowly made her way to the roof, seeing Newt sitting on the ledge. She made her way over to him and sat down a few inches away as she glanced at him. "I know you have it." She spoke up.

"What do you mean?" Newt asked.

"The flare. I've noticed you holding your arm a few times and that show just back there..." Clara gestured behind them then placed her hand on her leg. "Carter was the same way before...you know." She sighed.

"I remember you telling me." Newt nodded then it was silent again. The two not talking at all, just sitting there.

"I finally understand now." Clara finally spoke up.

"What?" Newt looked to her confused. Clara looked down for a moment before she met his gaze.

"Why you jumped off the wall." She answered and Newt's eyes seemed to soften.

"I didn't get why you did at the time, but..." Clara shook her head, looking away.

"It was probably almost a week after Carter died. I was a wreck. He pulled me out of the darkest place I was after the whole sacrifice shit. He was my light." Clara smiled slightly before she continued.

"But, after he was dead I was back in that darkness. I was empty." Clara looked at Newt for a moment before looking away again.

"First George got speared in the neck. Then Stephen got cut in half. Then my family turned their backs on me. This." Clara gestured to her right side of her face where the scars were. "Carter's death was the last straw for me. I knew what I was leaving behind, but I didn't care. I was sure Aaron would get over it. I just wanted some type of relief and this was my only option for me." She continued as she fiddled around with her fingers.

"So...that day. I went to the meds tent. Grabbed a bottle of pills I knew would do the trick. Went back to the tent Carter and I shared and swallowed that whole container while I waited for death on Carter's old cot." She bit the inside of her cheek a bit.

"But of course, Aaron being the worried older brother he was walked in. Saw the empty bottle. Basically was yelling at me. I was already feeling the effects so his voice was loud and echoed through my ears while I could see how concern he was." She shook her head as she still could remember it vividly.

"Clara." Aaron picked up the bottle then suddenly dropped it as he went over to her. His eyes widened as he tapped her cheek gently a few times.

"No. No. No. No. No. No! Clara what did you do? CLARA WHAT DID YOU DO?!" Aaron cried out as he looked around.

"VINCE! ANYONE! HELP!" Aaron shouted.

"Aaron being the genius he was turned me on my side, made me puke as I got most of the substance out of my system.  They said if he didn't get there when he did I would've been dead." Clara finished.

"I'm sorry you felt that way. Back in the maze, I only wished no one felt what I did...but..." Newt looked at her sadly.

"I know." She nodded. "But, it's done and over with. Right?" She asked and he smiled gently, giving her a nod.  The two heard the door open, Clara turned her head seeing Thomas walk out.  She turned back to Newt and gave him a small pat on his thigh.

"I'll talk to you later."  She said with a soft voice before she got up and past Thomas.  Thomas gave her a worried look and she shook her head softly with a tight smile before heading back inside.

"I want to try something."  Janson said as he walked past Ava Paige, going over to a screen, clicking a few things before pulling up Clara's file.

"What are you doing Janson?"  She asked and he looked over to her.

"You remember.  We had great plans for Clara.  We even put a little something special in that reader on the back of her neck."  Janson explained, a creepy grin slowly growing on his face.

"You don't mean-"

"Yes.  I do...and I think it's time we do it."  Janson used his finger to swipe a few things away.

"Put we don't even have eyes on her.  Janson we shouldn't."

"Doesn't matter if we have eyes on her or not.  Let's trigger her memories."  And with that Janson pressed a button where the screen flashed with a green unlocking button before it counted down...

"Why can't you come with me?"  A nine year old Clara asked as her mother kneeled down to her.

"Because this is a special place for children."  Her mother gave her a smile, she refused to cry, knowing she would never see her children again but it was for the greater good.

"Now."  Clara's mother grabbed her hand gently.  "You take your sisters hand and look after her.  Alright?"  Her mother let go and Clara immediately grabbed onto her younger sister's hand.

"I love you two more then anything."  Her mother gave them both a kiss on the forehead before they were taken away by WCKD guards.

Clara held her sisters hand as they sat on a seat on the train.  A boy around Clara's age came in and sat across from them, giving them a wave.  He smiled brightly at the two before he looked at Clara.

"My name is Nick."

"Wait.  What are you doing?"  Clara cried out as one guard pulled her away from her sister.  While another dragged her sister in a different direction.

"Sissy!"  Her sister cried out before the guard yanked her up and threw her over his shoulder.

"Kira!"  Clara shouted back.  "It's ok."

"They changed my sisters name." A fifteen year old Clara said as she sat across from a boy. "They thought they made me forget but I still remember. It's not Natalie. It's Kira." Clara's eyes flickered to the boy.

"They didn't change my sisters name. I don't get what their plan is."

"What's her name?"

"Nellie." Carter answered.

"We need to get out of here." Clara breathed out. "This place isn't good. It's evil." She held her knees tightly to her chest and Carter nodded.  "You just have to believe me."  Clara said to him.

"I believe you, Clara."  He nodded, he would always believe her, he would always trust her.

"Thomas!" Clara shouted and the boy snapped his head in her direction. "Don't let them take me." She flung herself on him, grabbing either side of his shirt tightly as his hands went on hers, looking at her with wide eyes.  Two guards were making their way towards them as her eyes held fear.

"I will not go in that maze!  I'm dead if I go in there!  I saw what they named me.  The Sacrifice?!  Please help me."  Clara practically begged as the two guards ripped her off of Thomas.

"No!  No!  NO!"  Clara's cries echoed off the walls as they were basically pulling her.

"Clara.  Clara!"  A new voice entered her ears as she looked around until she found who the voice belonged too.

"You can't take her!"  Gally shouted from where he was.  He couldn't do anything.  He was trapped behind a glass wall.  No matter how hard he shouted.  What he threw at the glass, nothing would get him past that wall.

"Gally."  Clara breathed out as tears ran down her cheeks, still trying to get out of the guards hold.  Her expression was mixed with fright and confusion.

"You'll be fine.  You'll be fine."  Gally repeated as he moved the same way where the guards were going before he had to stop due to the end of the room he was in.  His hand was on the glass as the two stared at one another.

"Not ready to die.  Not yet."  Clara said as her voice cracked at the end.

This. This isn't a memory. That's a lie actually. It is a memory. Only, it's not hers...

She looked at her hands in front of her before she used them to pull herself up the wall.

She said in her mind as she got higher and higher. She could hear feminine voices below her but she refused to look down once she yanked herself up to her feet. She carefully stood all the way up as she looked around.

She was on top of a maze wall. She could see the scorch in the distance. The maze in another, and then the glade.

"She did it!" Someone shouted below her.

"This is our way out!" Another shouted as cheers broke out.

"We just need to be careful and we can all make it across!" Clara felt herself yelling, but it wasn't her voice she heard. She walked a bit more, making sure to be careful. She made a few turns before she stepped up on a different level to where she believed could be the possible exit if she went this way.

"Hey! I think I figured it out!" She shouted once again as her right foot stepped down but it just broke through. Whoever's memory she was viewing just fell and fell and-

Clara breathed out heavily as her eyes widened. She wiggled her arms as she was on the edge of the building where Newt and her were talking the day before. She got dizzy from where she was and started to breath out heavily from fear. She tried to move her body backwards, but it seemed like she was falling forward before someone pulled her back, and off the ledge.

"Clara! What were you doing up there?!" Gally yelled as he basically pushed her to sit on the ground as his hands were on both her shoulders, trying to search her eyes.

She didn't look at him though. Her eyes were looking everywhere but him and she was spurring nonsense out of her mouth. Gally took his hands away as he placed his hand over her mouth to make her stop talking.

"Calm down. Ok?" Gally said calmly before removing his hand.

"I-I remember. I remember things I wish I didn't. Kira...my sister. I had a sister." Clara whispered the last part before continuing.

"Thomas. He worked with WCKD. Then you. I had a memory of you awhile ago but I didn't think anything of it. I was being taken away and-"

"I told you, you would be fine." Gally interrupted her.

"What?" Clara looked at him in shock. Not knowing how he would know.

"I got stung after you were gone and I got memories back as well. I remember watching them drag you away.  I remember a few conversations we had along with talking to Leo and some kid named Carter."  Gally explained to her.  At the mention of Carter, Clara's eyes widened.

"You talked to Carter?"  She asked and Gally looked at her a bit confused.

"Yeah...he wasn't in our maze-"

"What did you two talk about?"  She asked again and Gally looked at her for a second before taking a moment to think before answering.

"I met him first on the train when we were small.  We past by each other as we were being escorted.  He made a silly face.  That's it."  Gally said slowly, making sure he remembered it correctly.  Clara smiled, thinking that Carter was even funny when he was younger.

"Then there were a few times we talked to each other when we were older.  Every time it was about getting out."

Clara pulled her legs to her chest as she rested her chin on her knees.  "He had a thing about escaping.  Just knew who were good and bad.  It's like it was a gift or something."  Clara said softly.

Gally looked at her, almost analyzing her as she spoke.  "Sounds like you knew him."  He commented and Clara just stared at him, a sad smile appearing on her lips.  "More then you know."

The two were silent for a moment before Gally let out a sigh.  "After the...the"  he let out a deep breath, trying to get his words out but even thinking of that day of Clara being sacrificed him still scarred him.  It didn't matter that she was right in front of him, alive.  That day still haunts everyone who was there.

"The-"

"Yeah."  Clara interrupted him.  Knowing what he meant.  "We dated for a bit."

"Ohhhhh."  Gally moved his head a bit, wiggling his eyebrows with a smile as she shook her head at him.  "Stop."  She let out a small laugh.

"Ok.  Ok.  I'll stop."  Gally leaned against the wall before looking at the sky where the sun was slightly waking up.  It was silent between the two again.  Gally snapped his head over to Clara with a mischievous look on his face.

"Did you two do it?"

"Gally!"  Clara gasped at his question.

"What?  Come on.  We're best friends."  She groaned, her cheeks getting red from his question.  She rubbed her hands over her face before biting her lip for a second.

"The answer is yes."

"Knew it."
