Chapter 2: Ten Months In

"When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me"

"Where is the disinfectant liquid again?"  Clint's voice rang through Clara's ears as she was stitching up Nicks arm.

"Why?"  She asked, not looking away from Nicks arm as she concentrated.  Nick, looked from Clint in the back to Clara where he was gripping on her thigh with his uninjured arm clearly nervous and in pain.

She was used to this.  By Clint and other gladers who had come in contact with the needle and thread.  They either gripped her thigh or her arm.  She felt sorry for them because of the pain they had to deal with, and there wasn't any medicine she could give them to reduce the pain.

"I cut myself."  Clint spoke up.

"How on earth did you-"

"I was messing with the scissors and I cut myself."  He quickly explained before she finished her question.

"Clint.  I swear."  Clara groaned and shoved the needle into Nicks arm a bit harder, making him grab her thigh harder as he groaned in pain.

"Sorry." She gave him an apologetic look before continuing.

"It's in the second drawer to the right." She told Clint.

"Got it!"

"How's your little assistant coming along?" Nick asked her, smiling.

"Still new at this. So he's a handful, but he'll get the hang of it." Clara told her friend before she poured some liquid on the stitches and then wrapped it up.

"Next time. Don't stray with this kind of injury. Come straight to me." She told him seriously.

"Yeah. Yeah." Nick groaned as she was basically lecturing him.

"Let me guess. Leo told you to get your shuck-face over to me?" She questioned and he looked at her with a questionable face.

"You know, it freaks me out how you know things so well." He pointed to her with his uninjured arm.

"Because I live with a bunch of dimwits." She joked and he snorted.

"Tell Alby you will not be able to go in the maze for at least a week. If he tries to fight me on this, we know I'll win." She gave Nick a wide grin as he snorted before standing up.

"So true. Thanks Clara." Nick headed out and Clara started to clean up the supplies that she used.

It's been ten months since she has been in the glade. Almost a year, and she has been growing out of her shell slightly. She wasn't so quiet as she was a few months ago. She has grew and learned many things over these ten months.

She was scared at first, being the only girl. But now they were family. She trusted them. They wouldn't do anything to hurt her.

"I heard the greenie tackled Gally to the ground when he got out."  Clint commented, snickering slightly.

"You're already calling him greenie as if you weren't just greenie a day ago."  Clara smiled to him as he shrugged with a grin.

"What can I say?  I hated being called greenie when everyone knew my name."  Clint put some of the supplies back where he found them before sitting down.

Clara's smile widen a bit, she found it funny how the word 'greenie' just stuck from day one.  If the others knew where that term came from they would probably always give Nick trouble.

"Come on. The bonfire is about to start." She walked over to Clint and placed her hand on his back, gesturing for him to get up. He hoped out of his seat as the two walked out together. They could already hear the cheers in the distance.

"Was wondering if you were ever going to show." George jogged over to Clara where Clint already left her to go to his friends.

"You can thank Nick for that." Clara said.

"Oh?" George let out a small laugh. "Should've seen it Clara." He had a wide smile on his face as he walked backwards while he looked at her.

"He face planted so hard. I wish I had something so I could re watch it again. It was classic. Minho and I were laughing our asses off." George told her clearly amused of his best friends injury.

"The way you explained it compared to him. I wish I could've seen it." She told him as he turned back around and walked beside her.

"Tell you what." George slung his arm around her shoulders and pointed at her slightly with his other hand.

"If I ever get injured. I'll come straight to you. I won't wait till the last minute." He said seriously, a smaller smile playing on his lips.

"George you're my new favorite for just saying that." Clara leaned into him as they walked.

"Already replacing me C?" Gally walked up from the other side of the two, a drink in each of his hands.

"Yes she is. I'm her new best friend." George patted the top of her head as he looked at Gally, joking clearly.

"Oh. So you won't mind me telling Nick that you replaced him?" Gally smirked slightly.

"Oh, my god. Nick! I'm a horrible person." George dramatically said as he let go of Clara and ran ahead, looking for his best friend.

"Nick! I'm sorry I ever thought about that!" He shouted, very dramatically once again, waving his arms in the air.

Clara laughed as Gally watched George flinging his arms in the air as he ran, handing Clara one of the drinks. "Here you go."

"What is this?" She questioned as she took a sip of it.

"My secret recipe."  Gally proudly told her.

She let out a cough after she drank it, looking up at him, due to their height.

"Oh, shuck.  It's strong."  She let out a few more coughs before drinking more, Gally letting out a short laugh.

"What's in it?"  She questioned as they headed to the bonfire where others were ready to light it.

"Now, if I told you that it wouldn't be a secret anymore."  He said seriously with a smile.

"Alright.  Alright. Got me there."  Clara grabbed the stick that was on fire from Minho.

Alby cheered as he held his, the other gladers cheering as well.  "Keepers let's go!"

With that the keepers threw their sticks in, creating a giant bonfire. Everyone cheered and had smiles on their faces when they watched it light up.

"I love that smell." Leo said from beside Clara.

"Me too." She agreed as he gave her a soft smile. "Smells like home." He said before walking away, leaving her to look at the bonfire.

"Come on." Gally grabbed her arm gently as he pulled her to a log where the two sat down with the new greenie.

"Clara meet the greenie; Hank." Gally introduced the two.

"So you're the one everyone has been talking about. I have to say. You are the first to tackle Gally." Clara smiled and Hank let out a nervous laugh.

"Yeah.  For that I am willing to take him under my wing."  Gally confirmed and Clara shook her head at his words.

"Why are you the only girl here?" Hank asked out of the blue which made Gally groan.

"I told you not to ask her that." Gally gave his new friend a look.

"It's fine Captain Gally. He's a greenie. Just curious." Clara reassured him.

"Captain Gally?" Hank questioned.

"Nickname. He also likes to think he's in charge around here." Clara gestured to Gally with his thumb and Hank smiled a bit.

"I do not." Gally denied and Clara rolled her eyes slightly, nudging him.

"Anyways. Back to your question. Not sure. Like many things in the glade. We aren't sure." Clara told him the truth. The big, honest truth. They just didn't know.

"How do you all get along here? I mean. No one decides to just break one day?" The greenie asked the two.

"We just get by." Gally shrugged.

"We have each other and that is what is important." Clara told the greenie and Gally looked at her, giving her a confirming nod.

That's all they had. Was each other.
