Chapter 18: Till Forever Falls Apart

"I'm so glad I got to hold ya
And if the sky falls from Heaven above
Oh, I know I had the best time fallin' into love
We've been livin' on a fault line
And for a while, you were all mine
I've spent a lifetime givin' you my heart
I swear that I'll be yours forever, 'til forever falls apart
'Til forever falls apart""

"You two on mountain duty today?"  Clara asked as she stood in front of Harriet and Sonya.

"Yeah.  Sorry, thought we would be with you guys today."  Sonya smiled softly.

"Boo.  Now I have to deal with the two children on my own." Clara frowned slightly.

"Children?"  Aaron asked as he heard their conversation.

"Yes, children.  Well, more like Carter."  Clara explained.

Aaron just shook his head before handing Sonya and Harriet each a water container.  "Let's go Clara.  Hope to be home before dark."  He told her and turned around, heading to the jeep.

"Bye Clara."  Harriet smiled as she headed to her spot, Sonya giving a small wave before following after her friend. She didn't get too far when a pair of arms wrapped around her, pulling her into their chest.

"Hello Carter." Clara greeted as she didn't even need to turn her head to know who those arms belonged too.

"Where are you going?" Carter asked as he rested his chin on top of her head.

"Where are we-Carter! Did you forget?" She laughed slightly.

"Maybe...let's go."  He pecked her cheek where the scars were.  Something he did often to let her know that she was beautiful just the way she was.

Aaron turned on the ignition when he saw the two walking over.  "I was this close of leaving without you two."  He gestured with his fingers and Carter just smiled and sang a tune to himself before gripping the edge of the jeep and jumping in.

"And off we go."  Aaron slid his dark sunglasses on, changing the gears to drive and slamming on the gas.  The two held on at first, all being familiar with how fast he goes.

It didn't take long till Carter was talking again.  He stood up slightly, leaning between the two, as he put a CD in the console.  "Really?"  Aaron asked.

"I was dealing with silence for five minutes.  You know how I hate silence."  Carter gave him a side look before pressing a button and sitting back in his seat.   Aaron let out a sigh, looking back at his friend slightly.

"As long as it's not that damn song-"

Did you stand there all alone?
Oh I cannot explain what's going down
I can see you standing next to me

"Fucking hell.  Kill me."  Aaron groaned.

"Oh, come on.  It's not that bad.  It's quite nice actually."  Clara smiled a bit as she messed around with the gage in her lap.

"It is when you don't like whatever this music is called."  Aaron grumbled and tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"Where did you even find this CD?"

"It was on one of the runs.  There was actually a whole package in great shape.  See."  Carter smiled proudly as he held a small package of discs.

"Let me see."  Clara grabbed it from his hand and flipped through a few.

"Throw it out."  Aaron said.

"Don't you dare!"  Carter gasped.

"I'm not throwing it out."  Clara shook her head as she scanned them.  "They have everything.  Even music from the 40s.  Imagine living in that time."  Clara said.

"I bet people were happy.  Didn't have to worry about anything."  Carter looked down at his feet.

"I wonder how they dressed."  Aaron titled his head to the side slightly.

"Their families must of been wonderful."  Clara sighed as her eyes jumped to another CD.  She then closed it and handed it back to Carter.

"Oh!  Oh!  Here's the best part!"  Carter smiled widely and stood up as the air blew at him.  He held his arms out as was just taking this moment in.  Waiting for his favorite part of the song to play.

"Don't fall."  Aaron warned while Clara laughed, turning slightly as she looked up at Carter.

"Cigarette daydream.  You were only seventeen"

Soft speak with a mean streak
Nearly brought me to my knees
Do do do do do do

"Sing with me Clara.  You know this song."

"You can drive all night.  Looking for the answers in the pouring rain.  You wanna find peace of mind.  Looking for the answer. If we could find a reason, a reason to change."

Even though Aaron hated that song he couldn't help but smile as he glanced once and awhile seeing his friends singing their hearts out. They were happy. They were home.

"If we fall they'll tear us to shreds." Carter told the two as they were climbing up some type of broken cement pieces that were like a climbing rock wall.

"If we fall we'll die from the fall." Aaron retorted as he didn't bother to look down.

Carter breathed out as he gripped another piece and pulled himself up.  They still had a far way to get to the top and for their sakes they hope nothing was up there.  "I guess this would be a bad time to tell you two, I have a fear of heights."  Carter called to them.

"You think?!"  Aaron snapped his head to the side, looking at him, since he was a few feet next to Carter.

"Just don't look down."  Clara told him as she put her foot in a groove and pushed up.

Aaron raised an eyebrow as he stopped climbing, analyzing, as if he was trying to hear something.  "What is that noise?"  Aaron asked and Carter immediately looked down, seeing more cranks gathered at the bottom.

"Clara.  I'm looking down!"  Carter said with fear.

"I love you but you're an idiot!"  Clara yelled up at him then turned her head down as she heard the noise as well.

"Oh, shuck." Clara whispered as she started to pick up her pace.

The three continued to climb, Aaron got to the top first as he looked over at the edge, watching the cranks. There was a whole herd of them. Once Carter got to the top he leaned forward, his hand stretching to pull Clara up.

Clara gripped another piece on the wall and stretched her hand out, almost grabbing onto his until she moved her foot, a piece breaking off, making her slip and fall.

"I got you." Carter swiftly grabbed her arm as she was basically dangling, if he let go, she was a goner.

Aaron moved over and helped pull her up to the top. "That was scary." Clara mumbled. "Now what?" She asked.

"Wow."  Aaron whispered as he looked at the scenery in front of him.  "I wasn't expecting it to look like this."  He said as the other two turned around to look at everything.

It didn't even look like anything was ruined.  There was a large shed in the center while there was a decent size covered pool on the side. Along with a bright painting on the wall.

"It doesn't make sense." Clara said as she looked at the cover on the pool. Aaron walked along the side of the shed, looking in a window while Carter observed the painting on the wall.

"How is everything still like this?" Carter asked.

"There's no way someone is living here. It has to be something else." Aaron told them. "Guess, it just didn't get hit." Aaron shrugged.

"Clara, help me with this." Carter gestured as he went to one end and picked up the cover, Clara grabbing the other as the two pulled the cover off.

"Gross." Clara scrunched up her nose as she looked at the dirty pool water.

"I'm surprised there's any water left." Carter stood next to her as he looked at the pool in front of them.

Aaron walked over to the other side of the shed and looked inside another window once again. "Hey, guys! There's some soil still in here. We could use it." Aaron smiled.

"Sweet. I'll help." Carter rubbed his hands together and started to walk over as Aaron turned the knob on the door, looking at Carter.

"When we get back let's have-"

Aaron didn't get to finish because as soon as he opened the door an explosion went off from inside the shed. The explosion sent Clara flying back, deep into the pool. Clara went to breath but all she got was a mouthful of water and unpleasant images flashing her mind.

"Remember, WCKD is good"

"I don't want to go back in there! Thomas!  You have to help us!  Can't you help us?"  Before Gally could get closer to him, two men pulled him back, Gally thrashing in there arms as he looked at him.

"We know you have some power with them.  Help us!"  Gally begged as he was being dragged away to an exam room.

Clara made eye contact with Thomas and when she went to say something, water splurted out of her mouth.  She squeezed her eyes shut and when she opened them she was banging on the glass around her.  Trapped.  Trapped in some thing that was filled with water and then the flashback was over...onto the next.

A woman with long brown hair smiled to the two girls as she was drying some sheets on the line, the green grass brushing against her feet. Two girls, being the ages six and eight held each others hands as they spun around singing.

"Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks
When she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty-one"

Clara gasped and started to cough once she reached the surface, the air being a relief to her lungs as she ran her hand over her face, moving her hair out of the way. She held onto the edge of the pool. Keeping herself afloat as she looked at everything in front of her.

There was some debris in the pool and the shards of the shed scattered everywhere. There was a large fire from where it once stood along with it scattered in some places.

"Carter! Aaron!" Clara shouted and pushed herself out of the pool as her feet dragged against the ground, water dripping from her hair and clothes.

"Coastal! Call out!" She shouted, using the emergency call if they ever got lost. She let out a devastating cry as she continued to look from left to right, not knowing where they were.

"Call out!"

Clara continued to let out deep breaths as her eyes scanned the mess in front of her. She could hear the cracking of the fire and the smell. She loved the smell of a fire, but this...not this.

"Clara!"

Clara quickly snapped her head as she heard her name being called. "Clara!" Once again and she started to walk faster to the source of the voice.

"Carter!" Clara shouted as she saw him standing. He snapped his head towards her, he had a large cut on his forehead, blood running down the side of his face as he met her halfway.

"I'm so glad you're alright." He sighed in relief. "And you're wet." He laughed nervously, Clara pulling away. "Aaron."

"Aaron!"  Carter shouted as the two walked around.  "What if this whole thing collapses?"  Clara asked.  There was no way they could get the fire out.

"I think you know what happens if it does."  Carter murmured.  They heard some rummage before turning around, seeing the door moving then being pushed away.

"God, damn."  Aaron groaned as he just laid there.

"Oh, I'm so glad you're alright."  Clara breathed out with relief.

"No wonder why everything looked nice.  It was rigged.  Probably for the cranks."  Aaron grumbled as Carter pulled him up.

"Let's get out of here before something else decides to blow up on me."  Aaron told the two, already heading to an exit.
