Chapter 13: Into the Scorch

"They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets"

Carter quickly made his way back to the room where he ran through the open door with a big smile on his face.  "That was amazing.  I can't believe we-".  He noticed that she wasn't in the room.  "Clara?"  He questioned then looked back out the door as a nearby nurse was walking down.

"Hey!  Where's Clara?"  He asked and she looked back to him.

"The girl from Group A?"  She asked and he nodded.  "Oh, she was transferred to somewhere else." With that she left and Carter just stood there for a minute before rushing back in the room and slamming the door closed.

"Fuck!" He yelled and ran his hands through his hair harshly as he breathed out. They took her. They took her, just like they did with Anna and that guy from Group C. He suddenly looked to her bed and walked over to it, seeing the deck of cards on the bed.

Carter picked them up before sliding the pile out, he went through a few cards before he found the key card, a smile spread across his face as he grabbed it.

"I'm getting us out of here Clara."

1:00 am

Carter crawled through the vents, the only thing on him was Clara's deck of cards and the key card. He moved quickly then saw an opening, looking to make sure it was clear before he jumped down. He used the key card to open the door, but nothing was there.

He knew Clara was in here somewhere. It's WCKD. There is always something bad behind a certain door. He made his way down the hall before he found another door and used the key card to open it yet again. He walked in and immediately stopped, the door closing behind him.

There were giant tubes that were filled with water, inside were small grievers.  Carter walked in further before he was facing Anna. She was strapped up with some kind of oxygen mask on her. She was hooked up like some lab rat. Then there was the boy from Group C and-

"Clara!" Carter stood in front of her as he looked at everything around her.  "What the hell are they up too?"  He whispered as he moved some hair away from her face then looked at everything once again.  Analyzing how to get her off of this.

That's when he just started to unhook everything from her.  "Please don't make an alarm noise.  Please don't make an alarm noise."  He repeated before pressing a button that lowered her to the ground.  He quickly caught her before she fell and removed the oxygen tube off her.

It only took a few seconds before Clara's eyes shot open and she whacked at him.  "Hey. Hey. It's Carter."  He told her, grabbing one of her hands.

"Carter.  Good to see you."  She breathed out in relief as he helped her stand.  "We need to leave now."  She stared at him with wide eyes.

"We need to get a few things first."  Carter looked at her.

So that's what they were doing now.  Going through the vents as they went to the armory.  Each grabbing a back pack and a few knives and guns.  Carter turned to her and handed her the deck of cards, the two smiling at each other before they continued on their way.

Went to the affirmer where it was empty as well.  For now.  Carter looked at the clock on the wall as Clara shoved water in the twos backpacks along with some gauzes.

"Twenty seconds Clara."  Carter said as he knew exactly when that one lady would be back.

"This should be fine.  Let's get the shuck out of here."  She told him and Carter nodded.  He was used to her slang, didn't question it.  Hell, she called those things Grievers.  Her group certainly had strange words for everything.

They were running down the halls as they took a few sharp turns before seeing the main door.  Carter quickly swiped the card through, a green light appearing as it buzzed and opened up.   They ran through and took a sharp turn before immediately stopping as they were met face to face with Diego.

"How the hell did you two get here?"  He asked then his eyes widened as he went to touch his key card, it not being there.  Clara grinned as he glared at her.

"Want to see another magic trick?"  Clara asked, her grin never leaving her face.

"I'm so done with you kids-"

Diego didn't have time to finish because Carter immediately shot him with some type of tranquilizer that had him shaking on the ground.

"Here's your card back."  Carter said as he dropped it on the guard.

"Come on."  Carter told her as the two ran to the last door and pressed the button.  The door opening as the scorch air blew in their faces.  Carter turned his head towards Clara and gave her a nod, the two heading into the scorch.

~~~
"Should we stop in here?" Clara asked as she pointed to a building that was down in the sand dunes a bit.
"No. We need to keep moving. Who knows if they're behind us or what the hell is in there." Carter breathed out and pulled Clara forward again.
They continued on their journey through the scorch as the wind started to pick up.  Clara held her jacket to her face as she squinted, trying to see in front of her. They don't know how long they've been traveling, but they needed to rest. They couldn't continue on.
It seemed that hope was on their side as they saw a small shack in the distance. Carter immediately opened it, allowing Clara to go in first where she immediately fell on her knees, glad to get off her feet.
Carter then walked in and pulled the door closed against the wind with a sigh. Carter took off his bag as he fumbled around with the zipper then pulled out a flashlight, turning it on, lighting the small shack.
"Hey." Carter said softly, his voice rasped as he helped Clara take off her back pack. "Good?" He asked and sat down against one of the walls. Clara nodded and turned over on her back and looked up, seeing the night sky through some cracks.
"I don't know how long we have till sunrise. Let's just get some rest now and we can think about it when we wake up." He opened up a water bottle and drank from it before closing his eyes then opened them again when he groaned.
"What?"  Clara asked.
"I left my ball on my bunk."  Carter said and Clara laughed slightly.
Clara didn't say anything else as she could already feel herself falling into the dark abyss from exhaustion. Her eyes started to flutter while her fingers slowly started to stop feeling the sand as she grabbed a knife from her open bag and held it on her chest tightly.
"We should be safe here." Carter told her softly. His eyes closing as well, holding a gun in his arms as he fell asleep shortly after her.
