Chapter 11: A New Start
"Oh, you can't hear me cry
See my dreams all die
From where you're standing
On your own
It's so quiet here and I feel so cold
This house no longer
Feels like home"
A beeping noise filled Clara's ears as she slowly opened her eyes and was blinded by a light. She shut them once more before opening them again, slowly getting used to the light. She felt what was around her and noticed she was on a bed, a very soft bed. She looked around and all she could see was white.
Her eyes quickly flickered to the door that opened, a lady in white smiling to her as she walked in. "Oh, good. You're awake." The lady said and Clara looked at her nervously.
"You've been out for quite some time. A month and a half." She said as she checked her vitals. Clara didn't say anything, she was trying to process everything.
"What?" Clara's voice came out scratchy.
"Oh. All your answers will be answered shortly. Right now, let's get you out of bed and in the shower." The woman continued that creepy grin on her face as she helped Clara out of bed.
Thoughts were racing through her head at each step she took and when she was under the hot water in the shower they continued to race. That's when she finally got a good look at herself. She turned her right arm over slightly and pulled at her skin, noticing the long rigid marks that were scarred in her skin.
She then wiped the fogged up mirror in the shower and immediately flew her hand to her mouth before slowly removing it. Three longed rigid lines ran just right below her right eye, down her face, passed her neck, all the way down, just above her breast.
It didn't stop there. Clara remembered the pain she felt...on her back. Clara quickly started to turn the mirror in the shower, knocking down bottles of body soap and shampoo.
"You alright?" The lady asked, as she waited outside the shower.
"I'm fine." Clara croaked, moving her wet hair away as she turned her head, looking at the scaring on her back. A few tears fell from her eyes as she stared at the water flowing from the drain near her feet. It felt like her brain was glitching, she was trying to process what exactly was going on.
"Clara."
A man's voice echoed in her ears.
"Clara." Again.
"Clara." And again.
Clara blinked a few times before she looked up. She was sitting in some sort of room, her hair still damped from the shower she took earlier as she looked at the man sitting on the other side of the table.
"I'm sure you have plenty of questions to ask. So, I'm going to give you some answers now." The man told her calmly, smiling to her.
"One. You're completely safe. No one can hurt you. Two, you've been in a coma for a month and a half." He said and she just stared at him before parting her lips.
"I saw you." She told him and he leaned forward in his seat, his head tilting to the side a bit.
"When I was in the maze, I saw you." Clara explained and he nodded.
"That's good. You remembered. I'm Janson." He smiled again and she didn't like it. She didn't like that smile, there was more to that smile.
"Did everyone in the glade get out? Like what WCKD promised?" She asked and Janson bit his tongue slightly before answering.
"No. They're still in there. They weren't going to get out. It was a test." He tapped the table in front of him.
"Did they pass?" Clara asked and Janson let out a deep breath, his eyebrows knitting together.
"They didn't pass or fail. It was just a test to see what they would do."

One of the guards opened up a door where Clara walked in slowly, seeing a few bunk beds in the room as she looked around. She looked at one of the beds and saw a green tennis ball flying up and down on the top bunk.
"You have a roommate Carter. Don't do anything stupid." The guard warned him.
"Wouldn't plan on it Diego." Carter's voice sounded throughout the room. The guard closed the door behind Clara, it locking soon after.
"So, you must be the girl from Group A." The boys voice spoke once again, the ball suddenly stopped as a pair of legs hung from the bed then he jumped down on the ground, making his way over to her.
"I'm Carter." The boy smirked as he held his hand out to her. Clara just looked from his face to his hand, slowly grabbing it and giving it a small shake.
"Clara."
Carter took in her features and of course instantly noticed the scars. He didn't stare too long, knowing it would make her uncomfortable. He made his way over to one of the bunk beds and took a seat on the bottom bunk.
"Were you in a maze?" Clara asked, slowly walking over to the bunk opposite of him and sitting down across from him. Carter nodded as he bounced the ball on the ground.
"Group D. Mixed with guys and girls." He bounced the ball one more time. "Someone told me you were with all guys, is that true?" He asked, pointing at her slightly with the ball in his hand.
Clara looked at the ground as she thought of them. Nick, Leo, Newt, Minho, Fry, Gally. Her friends...well, most of them weren't her friends anymore.
"Yeah." She whispered.
Carter could tell from her body language and the long pause before she answered that something was wrong. Something happened in that maze. But they all went through something. That's the reason why they're here now.
"What happened? How did you get here?" Carter asked, leaning forward a bit.
"There's only three others here. All from different mazes. Guess we were all lucky somehow. There's a girl from Group B that found a way out of the maze." He chucked a bit, shaking his head. "Can't believe it. More like. Can't believe she left everyone back there." He paused before continuing, Clara looking back at him.
"Then there's a guy from Group C who found a way out from the box-"
"What?" Clara's eyes widened at that.
"Yeah. You know, the box that they send the newbie and the supplies up in?" He explained and Clara almost felt sick to her stomach. She stood up and walked away, standing in front of the door.
"Did I say something?" Carter asked as he looked at her form, looking away from him. "I'm sorry." He apologized.
"No, no. It's fine." She shook her hand at him. "How did you get out?" She asked, still not facing him as she told herself not to cry.
"A few of us decided to group up in the maze. Do it day and night instead of just during the day. See if we could find an exit faster, but it didn't." He sighed, running his fingers through his hair.
"I was the only one that got out." He finished, bouncing the ball again. "What happened to you?" He broke the ice as he continued to bounce the ball and watched it bounce. Clara looked at the door in front of her before turning around as she watched him.
"They sacrificed me to the maze."
Carter caught the ball, keeping it in place as he slowly looked up to her. He couldn't believe what he just heard. The group she was with just sent her to her death?
"They got a note saying if they sacrificed me they would let them all go." She cleared it up and Carter shook his head.
"And they believed it?" He raised an eyebrow and she nodded.
"Idiots." He mumbled and the lights immediately went out in the room.
"What was that?"
Carter chuckled slightly at her sudden question, standing up he walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Lights out. Time for bed." He gave her a nod before hoping up on the top bunk he was at before.
"Night new girl."
**I'm so excited for this part! I've been waiting to put Carter in.
