Chapter IV
Remus returned the following night. He was not entirely sure why but something about this 'night creeper' (as he has decided to refer to them as) sparked his curiosity in more ways than one. You see, being an inquisitive boy, his mind overflowed with many a question to which he would love to know he answer too, but also being a polite boy, he was unsure on how he should approach the situation as they didn't seem to be all that friendly the previous night. He had wracked his brain for any conclusion as to why they may have acted in a brisk way, yet, no conclusion was formed.
He leaned against the statue with the cloak draped over his leg, nibbling on some chocolate in silence. Pondering over what he could start off with, his eyebrows furrowed and he inspected the bar of chocolate in his right hand.
"Hello again," said he, "it's Remus, by the way, Remus Lupin. I just wondered, what is your favourite chocolate bar?"
He was met with silence.
"As much as I love wizarding chocolate, I must say nothing beats a good bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk, a muggle brand but you sure as hell wouldn't think so. Their chocolate is magical! I could leave you some if you want? I don't mind really, mum sends me at least three bars a week, if not more, dad says I'll get fat if I'm not careful, but I doubt it. Not with all the stairs in this castle! Muggles have this thing called an elevator, it's like a big box that can move you to different floors quickly, you only have to press a button. Dad says there's a few in the Ministry for Magic but they're quite different. I wonder how so."
Despite being met with silence once again, Remus had a strange feeling that the 'night creeper' was there. That's the thing with being a werewolf, your senses heighten and they definitely alerted him to a presence. "I won't lie to you. I originally thought that you not responding would irk me to high heavens and back but actually, it's quite the opposite. You see, my friends, James and Sirius, as much as I love them dearly, they don't quite know when to shut up. Of course, there is never a dull moment with them, but myself and our other friend, Peter, rather enjoy a spot of quiet here and there. I suppose that's why the world put us four together. James and Sirius bring out mine and Peter's confidence and we tone their ego's a little. However, I must say, I never would have pictured the four of us being friends."
The cloaked figure, remained behind the wall but edged closer. The sound of the boy's voice was muffled by the thick stone but when they pressed their ear against it, it was as if he was whispering right in their ear. He hadn't questioned their identity, he hadn't asked too many personal questions. He simply allowed for them to listen and actually, it wasn't so bad after all.
"You see, if you were to line us up back in first year, I wouldn't have put us all in Gryffindor if I was the Sorting Hat. I don't think I am very suitable to be a Gryffindor, I think perhaps a Ravenclaw but not a lion. No way! James, on the other hand, I think Gryffindor is him all over. I don't really know how to put it into words, I just know it. Peter, well, he would do well as a Hufflepuff, that boy is the most loyal boy I know in the entire universe and as much as he is quiet, if you provoke him enough, he sure will bite. Very much paralleling to a badger. I can see why Sirius was put into Gryffindor. But he is very cunning, and that's not a bad thing so he would have done well in Slytherin (don't let it be known to him of my opinion) but I think his achievements would have been capped. Gryffindor has broadened his horizons and I believe it has indeed benefitted him more."
They agreed. They enjoyed observing the students and the four boys had certainly caught their eye. The four seemed to make school fun but still get good grades. There was no denying their intelligence. In fact, it was rather daunting just how smart they were, but when you saw their intelligence outside of the education system... well, let's just say they're not so street smart.
"I wonder what house you were in. I've tried to piece together clues in an attempt to figure it out but I have had no such luck. With what I have. which is barely anything at all, you could be in any! I suppose it doesn't matter really, your house doesn't define you. It's just a section of the school at the end of the day, I don't suppose you walk into a job and be questioned on it in later life, well unless you apply for the head of house position. I can't imagine being a teacher. Too many children to deal with and not only that, their education lies in your hands. Talk about big responsibilities."
They smiled. He wasn't wrong once again.
"Speaking of responsibilities, I have early morning prefect duties. I better be heading to bed. Have a good night, hopefully I can come back tomorrow. It's rather nice sitting hear talking, I don't know if you are here but either way, it's been good. Nightie-night." He pushed himself up from the floor and dusted off the back of his pyjama bottoms. He left the remainder of his chocolate bar on the base of the statue. Then, after concealing himself beneath the cloak he slowly wandered back tow the Gryffindor tower, dropped off James' cloak on his trunk and flicked his slippers off and slid into bed.
They waited a few minutes after Remus had departed before slipping out from their hiding spot. Reaching out they plucked the chocolate off of the statue and sat down where Remus had once sat. At first they didn't do much except fiddle with it, reading the wrapper and then smelling it before eventually tasting it. It was good.
Remus was good.
