Days had gone by and the full moon was upon them. Shining brightly in the night sky, the sun glowing from behind it, it was larger than usual, seeming closer to earth. In the near distance, howls echoed, rolling throughout the hillside and fading into nothingness. Except the howls did not belong to your everyday wild wolf. Instead, the owner was a certain student from Hogwarts who hid this secret from all of his peers except his best friends and one other student, Severus Snape, but we won't talk about his knowledge on the factor.
Footsteps began to loom closer as the figure hid behind the one-eyed witch passageway, the shadows masking them and their cloak deep within them. It was easy to decipher that this was not the school caretaker, Argus Filch, and his cat, Mrs Norris, because the sound was of something large, walking in small, but nevertheless quick paces. Of course, to anyone, it would seem like a single, heavy person, but the figure knew better. The heavy footsteps were made by three people moving in sync but placing different levels of pressure onto the wooden flooring which created the effect of one set of thundering footsteps.
However, when the sound was right in front of the one-eyed witch statue yet nobody seemed to be there at all. The figure edged more into the open but was still unable to be seen. They could hear small whispers, incoherent and only a muffled sound, but they were there. With a flick of their wrist, the group was unveiled from what looked to be an invisibility cloak. There stood on guard, their wands raised were James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew.
"Who is there?" Barked Sirius who looked in all directions for any sight of a person.
Peter scampered to collect up the cloak, hugging it to his chest, "show yourself," said he.
James rattled around in his pocket pulling out a folded piece of parchment paper, his wand between his teeth which soon returned to the grasp of his fingers as he tapped the tip onto the parchment whilst saying, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." He nudged his glasses back up to the bridge of his nose as he studied the evolutionary parchment that now revealed itself as a map.
"What's it say, Prongs?" Asked Sirius not tearing his eyes off of the surrounding corridor.
"Avyanna Morrigan," replied James his voice hushed and filled to the brim with confusion that just so slightly ripples over the edge.
"Never heard of her," said Peter, "now show yourself Morrigan."
James stared at the map, edging forward towards the statue until his feet brushed the cloak of the figure but he didn't register it. The figure slowly stepped back, seeping into the wall leaving just the tip of their cloak to follow through as James lurched forward into nothing. "She's gone." He stated turning back to his friends, "she just left the map. That's not possible!"
"The only place that happens is in the come and go room. And that's on a totally different room," said Sirius lowering his wand. "But if she's gone then so should we. I can already hear, Moony."
Another howl echoed faintly from outside and the other two boys nodded their heads in agreement. They slipped beneath the cloak and moved on through the school, forgetting about the mysterious name on the map— for now.
During the night, the Shrieking Shack in the near by field of the school grounds caged four animals; a rat, a large black dog, a stag and a werewolf. Three of which battled one to calm it down. To keep it contained. Once a month this happened. The wolf's howls' could be heard for miles throughout the Scottish hills and the bark of the dog would too. The rat would squeak and pattered across the ground using the wolf as a climbing frame and the stag and dog would jump at it and try to pin it to the creaky floorboards until they all grew tired and dropped to the ground, snoring away until daybreak.
Then they would reside in the hospital wing, sometimes broken, but mainly battered and bruised, some more than others. Remus Lupin would sleep the day away whilst the other three were patched up and sent on their way back to lessons which usually they either slept through or bunked for the day.
This time the three boys remained by Remus' bedside, thankful that it was a Saturday and that they didn't have to make up excuses to stay out of lessons.
"I have never heard of this girl so whoever it is needs to stay away," said James, "they probably did all that to Evans and the other girls."
"I think that was a bunch of snakes," replied Peter picking at his nails without a care in the world.
"And how could she disappear without a trace. We might be wizards but no one except the house elves can apparate in and out of Hogwarts so how the bloody hell she did that I don't know." Exclaimed Sirius tiredly leaning against James to prop himself up.
"Found yourself a girlfriend, Wormtail?"
The boys turned to see Remus awake, his eyes rammed with deep dark circles and his face raw with new scratches but nevertheless, he managed to squeeze out a small smirk.
Peter's ears glowed red and he shrunk in his seat, "no," he murmured.
Remus sniggered, "then whose the mystery girl?" The three shared a sparing look. "Spill it, you idiots."
"Ever heard of Avyanna Morrigan?"
"It rings a bell. Why?"
James went on to explain the events of the night and once again they came to a loss. Remus could only laugh at their misfortune which was rare for the boy to after a full moon. Usually he had as much motivation as a sloth but today seemed different. The prospect of a disappearing girl who managed to slip passed his friends seemed exciting. And his intriguing desire to find out more baffled him. Why did he want to know more so much?
