Chapter 13
"Hey Bren. How's the holidays there?"
"It's better than I expected, Spence. We never had holidays like this back home."
"Well, cuz your mom and dad are always busy. Anyway, tell me the details. Did you ask him out on a date yet?"
Brendon clears his throat, as he lies on the bed of the extra room where the Weekes family lets him stay. He stares at the ceiling of the room as he raises his hand, like he's trying to reach something. But really, he's just remembering Dallon's hand intertwined with his. It makes him smile.
"His brothers kind of ambushed me, you know?"
He heard Spencer chuckle from the other line. Brendon knows his friend can pick up on things fast. He probably has an idea on what he's talking about.
"Is this like with your friend Matty again? The hurt him and I'll hurt you scenario?"
Brendon tries to stifle a chuckle at the memory. "It's not what you'd expect, but it isn't far off."
"Dude, I need details. Now. What happened? Sarah would be ecstatic to hear this."
"You just want blackmail material." He huffs, accusing his best friend.
"You know me well. Go on!" Spencer urges him, sounding interested to hear the rest of what happened.
Brendon shook his head, as he couldn't stop the grin forming in his lips. He's glad his best friend doesn't see how red his cheeks are. "Well, it started this morning..."
*****
"Are you dating my brother?"
"Real subtle, Jordan."
The youngest Weekes invited him to their room after breakfast to hang out and play video games, as he says. Being the same age as Jordan, he complies. Though, he should have known it was some kind of trap to lure him into a bombardment of questions.
"What? Might as well get to the chase, right?" The youngest answers Nathan, feigning a look of innocence that leaves his brother bemused.
Brendon notes that Jordan is definitely the notorious one of all the Weekes siblings.
"Please tell me you're dating Dallon." Jordan says, almost sufferingly that made his older brother snort at his expression. "For everyone's sake."
Brendon blinks at them, surprised that they seem okay with it if he ever tries.
"Uh, no--"
"Dammit."
"Language, Jordan!"
"--but I plan to ask him out?"
Both brothers pause to stare at him. They both blink, almost simultaneously, when Jordan cracks the widest grin he's ever seen, as he pumps his fist in the air, letting out a 'FINALLY' as if he just won something.
That was more well received than he thought.
"Jordan, behave yourself, can you?" Nathan scolds him as he shook his head at his brother's antics. But Brendon can see a smile creeping up his lips.
Jordan is practically vibrating with excitement. And Nathan has to put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down. Brendon concludes that the Weekes family definitely has colorful personalities in each sibling.
He just happens to have a major crush on the gentle one.
"Dude, ask him out. You have our blessing." The youngest one says. The older Weekes doesn't exactly say anything, or agreed to anything. But the smile on his lips is probably his okay signal.
"You're not against it? You know, being too young for him or something like that?"
"If you genuinely like our Dal, then who are we to stop you?" Jordan supplies with a wide grin. "I'm just glad he finally found someone to watch over him."
Brendon thought Jordan would probably be hardest to convince that he genuinely likes Dallon.
Jordan stood up from the floor, bouncing to his feet. "I'm so gonna tell this to Aunt Grace." And then he scurries off, as he closed the door behind, leaving him and the older Weekes staring at what just happened.
"Sorry about Jordan." Nathan says eventually, giving him an apologetic smile. "He shouldn't be given caffeine in the morning."
"It's fine. I'm just surprised at how fast it all happened." Brendon chuckles, looking down at his hands as he sat cross legged on the floor.
Both men let silence take them, hearing padded steps passing by their door.
"Do you really like my brother?"
Brendon looks up at the inquiry, but Nathan doesn't look at him. He's just fiddling with his hands, looking nervous.
"Weston told me about you, you know? And your story about being rich and all." Nathan continues, who now turns to look at him in the eyes. Stern and unflinching. It must be a Weekes trait. "Why Dallon?"
Brendon starts to deflate a bit. He dislikes having his status be involved in this.
"I really, really, really like your brother."
"Why?"
He's starting to feel the sweat forming on his head. With Weston and Jordan, it's different, but with Nathan, it seems like he's critically analyzing Brendon.
The quiet ones are always the deadly.
"He just... makes me happy."
"And how does he make you happy?" Nathan asked again, his voice as stern and cold as his expression shows. "How exactly does he make you happy that your money can not?"
"Because without money, I'm nothing." Brendon says without thought. It's always part of his dark thoughts. Without his father's power and fame, he's literally nothing. He'll be someone who people wouldn't even bother to bat on eyelash on him once their eyes land on him.
"But your brother chose to see beyond all I have. Your brother accepted me as myself. The boy working at a café during mornings and enjoys listening to music. Not the son of a politician." Brendon admits softly, shifting his legs that hit against his chest.
"In turn, I give him the same respect that he deserves." He pauses to look at the other boy, listening to him.
"I really like your brother, Nathan. And I don't think I have the heart to let go of him; selfish as it sounds."
Nathan just continues to stare at him, gauging and processing his words. Eventually, the other man nods. Brendon still isn't sure if it's a gesture of approval on the younger Weekes' part.
Brendon didn't get to know when Jordan returns to the room with some food. He ends up setting the game console for them to play on, and that's it.
He's still a bit anxious, and he only hopes he's impressed them, at least.
*****
The kitchen always has that familiar scent that Dallon remembers as a child.
It always has that smell of freshly baked pastries. His Aunt Grace loves to bake quite a lot, and he remembers being quite the helper in her recipes as well. After every baked recipe, he always seems to be covered with flour.
"Can you pass the butter, dear?"
He reaches out the butter from the table and gives it to his Aunt. Curious to what's her recipe for that day, Dallon peeks over her shoulder, seeing her crack two egg, mixing them together in a bowl with her whisk.
"What are you baking today?"
"I'm trying to bake this cake that Jordan found on those search tools that you kids use today."
"Internet?"
"Yes, that's it."
Dallon smiles, seeing that his brothers are teaching their Aunt about technology. She's not very good at it, but she's learning.
"Your friend Brendon is a charming boy." Aunt Grace mentions, as she starters to put the batter into the pan. "Glad to know you're making some friends at your home."
"Yeah. Brendon is important to me. I owe him." Dallon responds. He suddenly remembers Brendon's words to his parents that made him fluster.
His Aunt turns to him, as if she knew something about his thoughts and gives him a knowing smile.
"You know, when I met your Uncle, I dislike him. He was arrogant, noisy, and annoying. He keeps following me around until I agreed to have a date with him."
Dallon tilts his head, unsure of where the discussion is going. But he remains silent, letting his Aunt continue.
"But you married him."
"Exactly. I married him because I saw the good things in him. It's easy, if you let yourself see, don't you think?"
Dallon smiles, once he realized what his aunt was insinuating. "I agree."
With a cheeky grin, his aunt pats with her flour covered hands on his cheek with affection that made Dallon laugh. "That's a smart boy. Now put these in the oven and set the timer. I'll just bring this fresh batch of cookies to your niece."
Following his aunt's instructions, he sets the timer of the oven and wait for it to bake. He leans on the kitchen island when Jordan came in, wearing this grin that Dallon suddenly feels unnerved about.
"What is it, Jordan?" He crosses his arms against his chest. Suspicion is glazed in his eyes as his brother has this smug look on his face.
"So, Brendon, huh?"
"And what about Brendon?"
His brother's smile intensifies, and he is truly unnerved.
"Oh nothing. I'll just be borrowing your boyfriend for a bit in our room--"
"He's not my boyfriend." Dallon interjects.
Jordan hums, as he makes his way to the fridge, taking a few cans of soft drinks and chips. Before he left the room, he stops his tracks and looks over his shoulder to look at Dallon mischievously. "He will be."
He watches his brother wink at him before making his way up stairs. Dallon only shook his head fondly at his actions.
When everyone around you is just telling you to do something about it, then there's no harm in trying at all.
*****
"Wait, you're going back here now?"
"Yeah. We're just packing our bags and we'll be on the road again back to the apartment." Brendon says, as he folds his clothes and stuff them into his bag.
"You'll be in a surprise of your life when you guys get home."
Brendon furrows his eyebrows, not sure what his friend is talking about. "What?
He can hear Spencer chuckling from the other line, and Brendon is just mystified about it.
"Oh, you'll see."
With a goodbye, Spencer drops the call, leaving Brendon confused at the whole discussion. Whatever Spencer's planning, he knows he should give a heads up to Dallon about it.
He sighs, and returns to pack his bags. Brendon enjoyed his stay with the Weekes family, and he's happy to see Dallon smiling better at the whole reunion. It appears almost all of his struggles are paying off, and he's just elated to see the brunette free from his demons.
The holidays have been nice, but it's finally time for them to return to their home.
