chapter four

the explosion rocked the mountain, and I was suddenly very afraid, Slade could be here, and I really didn't want him to be.

I immediately sunk into the shadows, I started to hyperventilate, and I tried to make my breathing as quiet as possible. A man stepped out of the smoke, and it was a close second to being as bad as Slade.

Sportsmaster strut into the room, an air of confidence that gave him an unexpected edge over the heroes.

"I know the little runt is here, now I haven't told Slade yet, but he is very unhappy, and has paid me heavily to find him, so i'll give you five seconds to get out here in front of me or else i'll blow this mountain to kingdom come" he threatened.

I sunk further into the shadows, and I saw sportsmaster scan the areas near the roof, his gaze lingered on me for a second before moving on, and my blood ran cold when sportsmaster grinned "found ya" he said triumphantly. He took out a tranquilizer, inserting it into the gun, and pointing it to my hiding spot

i moved quickly, climbing to a new position, and wondered briefly why the heroes haven't tried to deal with this yet.

their shock seemed to have worn off by now, and charged towards Sportsmaster.  He evaded them. "come now renegade, when will you give this little charade of being a hero up? we both know that you belong with our side, and you're only delaying the inevitable, how do you think Slade is going to feel when he discovers where you are, and what do you think he's going to do when he has to come and get you, because i can almost guarantee that he won't be happy"

I knew what I had to do, but that didn't mean that i had to like it.

Taking a deep breath, and clicking a small button on my belt, i jumped down from the shadows.

Sportsmaster was wearing a mask, but i could tell he was smirking under it, the same way i could always tell with slade, and the Bat.

"there you are, now come quietly and your friends won't die, how's that sound?" i gulped, and nodded, knowing full well he wouldn't back out on his word. Sportsmaster may be a lot of things but a liar is not one of them.

he turned on his heel, proudly walking out of the hole he'd left in the mountain. I had pressed the distress button on my belt, one that batman had set up for me the moment i got home. He wanted to make sure i was safe so always had me carry it, I hated it at first, but now i really appreciated it.

he lead me towards a car, and shoved me into the back seat, probably had child-lock activated so i wouldn't be able to escape, which is what he thought would be able to keep me.

The car ride was long and awkward, what are you even supposed to say in these scenarios?

"Please don't tell Slade where I was" I said in such a quiet voice that I'm surprised sportsmaster even heard what I said.

Instead he laughed.

"Oh he's going to be mad when he finds out" he laughed some more, and I cringed.

Oh he's going to be beyond mad.

"He's going to kill them" I tried to reason.

"I don't care kid, besides it's your fault you decided to run away and play hero"

Closing my eyes and leaned back in the seat, and contemplated life.

I've resolved that it truly sucks.

Suddenly a loud rumble sounded and a sight for sore eyes appeared, making my breath quicken in happiness.

The batmobile.

"Crap" sportsmaster started swerving and trying to evade the big black bat, but it was near impossible.

The man is persistent.

Finally Batman shot a wire at the car, and it stopped moving but fought against the rope.

Batman showed zero mercy and knocked sportsmaster out pretty quickly, and handcuffing him.

Once I was safely out of the car I didn't care that we were out in public, I hugged my dad.

He hugged me back and we just sat there for a moment.

"B, I think it's time that I came back to the public eye view."

Bruce nodded, and after making sportsmaster so terrified that he promised to not speak a word about me toward anyone, I realized with great joy that Daddybats had reared it's ugly head.

There was no stopping daddybats for once it was activated criminals were wary of the bat, and cowered more than usual.

It's probably been in full effect since I left

Well now I felt guilty.

"He's coming for you boy, even if I don't tell him, he'll find out"

Taking a deep breath, I went and sat in the beloved batmobile, and waited for Bruce to finish threatening sportsmaster.

The drive started silent, but it quickly ended when Bruce started talking. "I watched the tapes of the cave"

It was his way of saying 'are you okay?'

"Well I'm scared, I'm afraid that Slade will find me again, his temper is worse than yours, so if he does than...it won't be great for me." I admitted.

"That's not going to happen, we'll protect you, and If he tries to get to you, he'll have to deal with the entire justice league"

I nodded, although I'm not so sure that the threat of the entire justice league will slow the famous mercenary down any, one thing I did learn from this was that Slade was willing to pay someone to find me.
