Chapter Two

A flash of red light caught my attention and tore it from my thoughts. I looked at the windshield just in time to see everything that happened.

A huge, lift-kitted, truck came barreling towards us. It was on the wrong side of the road.

Why are they trying to go back towards where the disease is spreading? I thought. And why on the wrong side of the road?

Kathy screamed, my mom screamed. My dad tried to swerve away from the oncoming truck, but it was too late. The truck slammed into the front of our small car. Both my parents and my sister screamed as the front of the car pushed itself inward towards us. The windshield shattered and glass came flying towards us. I felt it slice my face, the hot blood flowing from my ripped skin. I finally screamed.

And then the car flipped.

All four of us screamed. I had a flashback to the fair we'd been to a few years back. We had gone on a roller coaster that had went upside down and backwards. All of us screamed then too. I smiled slightly at the memory, but stopped when I was brought back to the reality of what was really happening.

The car landed with a thud. My parents were still screaming and Kathy was crying. I stared at the top of the car that was now underneath me. My breathing was heavy and my heart was racing. Calming my breathing, I clicked the button on my seat belt and fell out of my seat. I felt better without the blood rushing to my head.

"Come on Kathy," I whispered and clicked the button on her seat belt as well.

She let out a yelp as she fell. The two of us crawled out of the broken window. I looked over at the truck that had hit us as my sister went to help my terrified parents. There was no damage done whatsoever to the truck. No scratch, no dent, not even a spider webbed window.

"Where's the driver?" I muttered to myself.

"Ella! Come help me!" Kathy yelled to me.

I turned and saw that my dad had gotten out of the car, but my mom was too panicked to do anything. I walked over and helped drag her out the window. Once she was out of the car, my dad pulled us all into a hug. Tears streamed down his face.

"What are we going to do now?" Kathy asked.

My mom pulled away, finally somewhat calm.

"There's an old house over there," she pointed to a run-down house a ways off from the road.

"That looks dangerous, Mom," I warned.

My dad shrugged. "It's all we've got at this point."

My parents and Kathy began to walk towards the house. Warily, I followed them. Something didn't feel right, but I didn't say anything. I ignored the red warning bells flaring in my head.

Did anyone else notice the fact that the other driver is gone...?  I wondered.

But still, I didn't say a word. They wouldn't listen to me anyways. They never did. So, I pushed all the bad feelings away. I followed my family to the old house that looked like it would collapse at any moment.

"What if homeless people are living in there?" Kathy asked as we reached the door of the abandoned house.

"We're homeless people now too, Kathy," I replied.

She glared at me and I glared back.

"Come on girls," my mom said and pushed the door open.

A gust of air flew at us. I coughed on the dust. A bad feeling overcame me.

"I don't think we should be here..." I said to my parents and to my sister, but none of them listened. They just kept walking.

I followed, not knowing what else to do.

It was the single worst mistake of my life.
