Chapter 9: A New Record

I was exchanging my books in my locker, but I was really planning on ditching class again. It''s been a couple of weeks since I kissed Rubix, she's been avoiding and I'm glad she's saving me the trouble. But time to time she would shoot daggers at me, and I find it amusing.

"So have you heard?"

Two guys were having a conversation next to me. I was never the one to gossip, but I was bored. So, why not? I slightly leaned closer, trying to hear better.

"They're coming today."

"Man, I have to see if she'll actually beat it."

"We're going to need to solve it faster, because it's getting harder to beat her the more we wait."

"Yeah. Five minutes is just impossible."

"It's going to be in the library, after school, right?"

"Yeah. See you there."

"You too."

The two parted ways and I just stood there dumbfounded. What was that all about? Who's coming, who going to beat what? All I now is that I got to be in the library, after school.

I looked at the unsolved Rubik's cube in my locker. I hate to admit it, but I need her. And I don't even know if she can actually solve the Rubik's cube. She denied it every time I asked her, and I've never seen her solve the cube before. But from what Max and Westley told me, she knows how to solve it.

So the million dollar question: Why was she lying?

It can't be just because she hates me. I can live with that excuse, but there's something else.

There's always something else.

The whole library was packed. I never this many people in the library before. When I pass by the library when I ditch, only a few kids go there to study. It was as if the whole school was here. Teachers, staff, students, even the janitor took a break and stayed to watch. Everyone was surrounding a table at the center of the library. They all looked anxious, excited and bored, whoever they were waiting for must be late.

What's going on?

"There you are!" Someone said, slapping his hand on my shoulder.

"We've been looking everywhere for you!" Westley said.

Max nodded. "We were going to tell you about this."

"You have?" I asked, deadpanned. "Because I found out about this when two guys were having a conversation beside me."

Both of them chuckled nervously. Liar, liar, pants on fire.

"Okay," Westley admitted. "We didn't tell you cause..." Max shot Westley a look.

I raised an eyebrow. "Cause..."

"Rubix told us not to," Westley said.

Max punched his shoulder. "You idiot! I should have known that you can't keep your mouth shut, even for Rubix."

"I'm sorry!" Westley said, earning another punch from Max.

"What does Rubix have to do with this?" I asked them. "Why is she the one telling you guys what to do?"

They both looked at me like I asked the most stupidest question anyone can ever come up with.

"Because it's Rubix!"

That's the stupidest answer anyone can ever come up with.

"That's the stupidest answer anyone can ever come up with."

What? I speak my mind.

Westley feigned hurt. "Hurtful."

"You guys owe me an explanation," I growled, glaring at them.

"No we don't," they said simultaneously.

I rolled my eyes, not this again.

"Stop doing that!"

"Me? You!"

I grabbed their collars and dragged the through the crowd. They were having a cat fight behind me. I sighed, I'm friends with a bunch of idiots. We finally found a good spot on the second floor of the library. All of a sudden the whole library became quiet, I swear you could hear a pin drop. The main library doors opened and Rubix walked in. Behind were two big guys that could pull off as Men in Black.

There were whispers and a fox trot whistle or two. Rubix ignored them and made way to wards the table everyone surrounded. Everyone parted like the Red Sea before her, and she acted like she was used to it. She took her seat, looking bored out of her mind.

She yawned. "Let's get this over with."

One of the Men in Black placed a Rubik's cube on the table. One of them nodded to his friend and he grabbed the Rubik's cube. Everyone watched as he started to scramble the cube. Finally, he handed her the Rubik's cube back on the table. He also placed a long strip of fabric in front of her. She rolled her eyes and picked up the fabric. Then Rubix looked at a guy behind her.

"Do you think you could-?"

The poor kid fainted before she could finish her question. She didn't even flinched as he slumped forward, face first on the ground. Rubix stared at the guy on the ground and sighed.

"Can someone take him, I don't think he can breathe like that." Her voice actually sounding concerned.

One of the guy's friends came to his aid and dragged him away. Rubix then moved on to the next person and he was happy to oblige. He grabbed the fabric and put it over her eyes as a blindfold. I furrowed my eyebrows, why is she being blindfolded for? Rubix went back forward and took the scrambled Rubik's cube in her hand.

"Rubye Chandler," one of them started. I noticed that she cringed at the sound of her name.

He continued. "You are to prove that you are able to defeat the past record of solving the Rubik's cube of 9.53 seconds. You must finish solving it before than to beat the record."

"Well, what are we waiting for then?" She asked, being impatient.

A Men in Black took out a stopwatch from his suit pocket.

"Ready?"

She crossed her legs, leaning back against the chair.

"You tell me," she said with a smirk.

Is it me or is she getting cocky all of a sudden?

"Go," he said as he pressed the stopwatch.

Rubix then flipped the Rubik's cube. I snorted, she can't possible solve it blindfolded. Then she started to slip the cube like she memorize every move. He hands moved in sync with the cube, she looked like she was scrambling rather than solving it if you focused on her hands. I watched in awe and amazement as people around me whispered how she almost solved it.

Her face was emotionless, she didn't looked nervous or panic just calm. I can't believe it, how can anyone do something so amazing? Then I heard her slam the Rubik's cube on the table. How could she know that she finished when she's still blindfolded? I looked around, everyone was just watching, waiting for something.

The Men in Black with the stopwatch looked up. "5.18 seconds."

The whole library went nuts. Everyone started screaming, cheering, and chatting away. Lots of people gathered around Rubix, actually asking for her autograph, even actually taking pictures with her.

Max shook his head. "She didn't just defeat the record."

"She destroyed it!" Westley finished.

I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Great, something to add to her ego.

"C'mon," Westley said excitedly. "We should go get her autograph."

I looked at him like he got stupider, which he did. "You know her. Why do you want to have her autograph?"

"Because she's got her face on the world records book." Max explained. "She's like a celebrity now, in the speed cubing world now."

"The world records book." I repeated.

I looked below and saw her photo being taken by a Men in Black. But even I could see that she had a fake smile plastered on her face. She talked with them with a bored expression on her face, then she shook their hands before they left. A guy then whispered something into her ear, I saw her shoulders slump as she finally agreed to whatever he asked her. Then two guys lifted her off and carried her out of the library.

"Party at my place!" Rubix announced, not sounding a bit excited at all.

Everyone followed right her, out of the library. Why would she throw a party when she isn't even in the party mood?

"You're coming to the party right?" Max asked me, shaking my shoulder.

I nodded. "Yeah. You guys go ahead."

"You sure?" Westley asked.

"Just text me the address. I'll meet you guys there." I assured them.

They looked at each other, then nodded.

"See you there, Drake."

I watched them run after the crowd. I ran my hand through my hair, leaning against the banister. I was so confused right now. What's with her? Couldn't she at least be proud that she got her face on a book? Why does she look so unaffected by this?

I shook my head, that Rubix is really something.

I can solve a Rubik's Cube.

Yes, you guys read it.
