Chapter 1: My First Rubik's Cube
"We turn the Cube and it twists us."
-Ernő Rubik
I learned my talent at the start of kindergarten.
I just turned four and we moved to Los Angeles because my dad had a new job. I'm going to kindergarten, though school started a few days before.
My long dark brown hair was held by a green headband. I wore my favorite green dress that my dad said it matched with my hazel eyes and freckles. I had a green backpack on to match my outfit with all of my school supplies. Finally my dad pulled the car in front of the school.
He smiled. "Good bye Princess, have a good day in school."
"Bye Daddy, have a good day at work."
Then I hopped off the car and skipped to the front of the school. There were really big words at the top of the door.
I squinted at it and managed to read it out loud. "Jackson Elementary."
I smiled to myself, being proud that I could read that without any help. I took a deep breath and walked into the school. I managed to find my classroom by counting the numbers until I got to four. I like my classroom number because I'm four years old. I opened the door and walked in.
I interrupted the teacher who was talking to the class. Everyone turned to look at me. Being scared of suddenly being the center of attention. I quickly close the door shut. My eyes widened, that's my class? It's so big, I'm so worried now. What if I'm not going to do well in Kindergarten?
Suddenly the door I was leaning on opened. And I fell backwards to the ground. I heard couple of giggles and snickers from my classmates. I blushed so red, they would have thought I represented Christmas, since red and green were Christmas colors.
The teacher hushed them. "Are you okay, sweetie?"
The teacher was tall, pretty lady. She had short blond hair and pretty blue eyes. She wore a long blue and green dress.
I nodded then quickly got up and brushed the dirt of my dress.
"Do you happen to be Rubye Chandler?"
"Yes," I said shyly.
"My name is Ms. Penelope," the teacher said. "Let me introduce you to the class."
"Okay."
We walked to the front of the class. I scanned the room, there was probably 25 kids. Staring at me.
"Everyone, this is Rubye Chandler. Rubye just moved here from Chicago. Now I want you all to..."
She started to tell the class how they should treat me since I was new. My dad told me it was some lecture the teacher gives the student and that you don't have to listen since it's not for you. I looked around the room. Art projects were pinned up the walls, the tables were filled with crayons and other art supplies, and there was a library filled with many books.
I looked behind me and saw Ms. Penelope's desk. It was a little messy with papers and books scattered around it. But I saw something that caught my eye. It looked like a square, but it isn't. I thought of all the shapes I know, then it hit me. It's a cube.
I lifted the cube up and studied it. There were six sides, and there were nine little squares on each side. The squares had the colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, and white. But the colors were all scattered, not one side had the same colors. I studied it some more and accidentally flipped one of the rows. I held a gasp, did I break it? I looked at the row I turned and saw that all of the squares had the same color. Maybe I could match all of the colors for Ms. Penelope.
I smiled at the thought and started to flip and turn the rows. I didn't know what I was doing, I never touched this game before. I don't even know the rules. But only one thing was in my mind, to match all of the colors. I flipped, moved, turned and soon all of the colors matched in each side. Red, blue, yellow, green, orange, and white.
"...Now class let's give a warm welcome for-" Ms. Penelope stopped and stared at the cube I was holding.
"R-Rubye, what happened with that Rubik's Cube your holding?"
"I matched the colors Ms. Penelope, do you like it?" I asked. "It has my favorite color, green."
She got the Cube and studied it.
"What did you do to the Rubik's Cube?" She asked with disbelief.
Was she mad at me for messing up her cube?
I sniffled. "I'm sorry Ms. Penelope. Did I break it?"
"Quite the opposite," she said. "You actually solved it. The question is, how did you do it?"
"What do you mean? You just flip the squares to match the colors for the cube."
"No Rubye, this is a Rubik's cube."
"A Rubik's cube?"
"The Rubik's cube was invented by Ernő Rubik in 1947." She explained. "Think of the Rubik's cube as a really hard puzzle. You first unscramble it, then you solve it like what you did. Matching the colors for each side.
A boy raised his hand. Ms. Penelope gave me back the Rubik's Cube and called on the boy.
"Yes, Griffin?"
"What's so hard about solving a Rubik's cube?"
"There are exactly 239,500,800 ways to arrange the Rubik's cube. Imagine having to find all of those combinations just to solve one side. And when you solve one side, you have no choice but to mess that side up and try to solve another one."
I looked at the Rubik's Cube again. I flipped it a few times and showed it to Ms. Penelope.
"Look, now it looked like a checkered pattern."
Ms. Penelope's jaw dropped, I was afraid that it would hit the floor. "Could you do another pattern?"
I thought for a moment then nodded. I turned the rows and made the pattern with 1 color at the middle of other squares with a different color. Then I made the pattern of 3 colors going diagonally. The whole class watched in awe as I made each pattern in ease. Soon I put it back to it's original for with the same color on each side.
"Rubye, have you ever solved a Rubik's Cube, until now?"
"No."
"Seen a Rubik's Cube before?"
"No."
"Heard that there was such thing as a Rubik's Cube before?"
"No."
"Amazing," she muttered.
She bended down to me so we could look at each other face to face. "Rubye, you are a very special girl. Not everyone can solve a Rubik's Cube without algorithms or copying movements from someone else."
I couldn't help but smile. "Thank you, Ms. Penelope."
"Now, go have a seat next to Griffin."
I nodded. "Yes, Ms. Penelope."
I sat next to the boy who Ms. Penelope called on earlier. He had a white collared shirt with a red tie and a black vest. He has long light brown hair and gray eyes.
"Hi," I said. "I'm Rubye Chandler."
"I'm Griffin Jacobs, nice to meet you."
He held out his hand and I shook it. Ms. Penelope started to start the lecture that I interrupted with my arrival.
He leaned next to me and whispered. "You look really pretty in that dress."
I blushed brightly and replied, "Thank you."
Then I continued to listen to our teacher. I'm starting to like kindergarten.

Hey readers of my 5th book. How did you like the first chapter? Pretty cute right? But don't worry, I won't end there. More will come, I guarantee it. At the side is a picture of Rubye when she was in kindergarten. Hope she looks as adorable as you picture her. :)
Not much to say, but I have much more to write.
