a little "distraction" (11)
I realized that I have this story's time period messed up. So, I'm going to explain the time of the year when this is taking place.
Cassandra's birthday was on 18th July and they got married after six months so that means that it was December. This story starts in January and since it's set in Australia it means that it's summer there too.
In short it is January in this story.
I stand outside the palace as everyone piles back into their waiting cars. I'm standing a few feet away from William and his father. Molly walks over to me and envelops me in a hug but right before pulling away she whispers.
"Don't forget about what I said. I have my eyes on you."
She pulls away and gives me a fake smile before walking to her car and getting in with her brother's help. The moment her door closes the car at the very front starts moving and automatically all the others follow.
I heave a sigh of relief as the last of the cars go out through the gates.
"We should get going, we already put off that meeting once which is not going to do us much good." Ronald tells William as he hurries inside.
William and I follow him in and in the entrance hall a butler rushes forward and hands William his laptop bag which he swings over his shoulder like a school bag. In a matter of moments the king reappears with the same air of hurriedness and quickly walks out of the door.
"I should get going too." Will says turning to me.
I nod. "Okay."
He gives me a quick kiss and then hurries out after his father. I watch them through the open door as they drive away. With this I go back to my daily routine.
Helen sits in an armchair identical to mine, opposite from me. She has her nose buried in some papers and I try focusing on the budget papers I have in my hands but I just can't bring my brain to start working. After a few minutes I sigh and lean back before tucking my feet under me.
My phone beeps on the table giving me an excuse to lean forward and grab it.
It's a message from William, which says:
After what happened with Molly you deserve a little distraction. Be ready at seven.
I read the message twice and want to reply to it. But I decide against it because he must've been busy or else he would have called me too.
Setting the phone back on the table I turn my attention back to the papers. Before this I didn't want to work because I didn't feel like it but now I don't want to because I can't stop thinking about what William means by "distraction."
When the clock finally reads 6'oclock I sit up and put down the papers on the table and pick up my phone.
"I think it's enough for today. I have to go somewhere with William." I tell Helen.
"Of course!" She replies and starts gathering her papers too.
I get up from my seat and leave the study to go to my room. I dial William's number as I walk along and hold it up to my ear.
"Hey!" He greets me as soon as he picks up.
"Hi! I got your message. What do you mean by distraction?" I ask.
"You know any normal wife would've asked her husband about his day and how he was instead of jumping straight to the questions."
I scoff. "But we're not normal."
"Point taken and by distraction I mean something fun and something that I haven't done in a while. Though, I'm not going to tell you anything else." He says.
"Fine, don't. But just please tell me what should I wear."
"Nothing formal. Just go with whatever you feel comfortable in." He replies.
"Well, how about the classic, hoodie and jeans?" I ask him.
"That's perfect."
At exactly 7'oclock I'm dressed in my chosen attire waiting for Will in the living room. After a few minutes of waiting a butler appears to announce that he's here.
I walk down the stairs to the waiting car and slip in to find him dressed in a black fleece jacket. I blink at him a couple of times and then turn around to grab my seatbelt.
"What?" He asks me.
I buckle myself in. "You look good."
"Yeah, so what?" He shrugs.
"I've seen you dressed casually but you look good in a black jacket." I explain my reason of shock.
"Haven't you gotten used to seeing me in just a t-shirt and boxers every night?" He raises an eyebrow.
I shake my head in disbelief and punch his arm making him chuckle. He turns his attention to the road as the car starts moving.
After a few minutes of driving in silence I try again. "Now, will you tell me?"
"No! You will find out when we get there, anyways." He says.
I huff and fold my arms as I look out my window. I don't recognize the road we're driving on but something tells me that I've been here before. So, I just look at the cars passing by. All of a sudden music starts blasting out of the sound system making me jump but the seatbelt doesn't let me get too far.
"What the hell?!" I exclaim as William laughs.
I don't recognize this song but the next one I recognize at once and start singing along.
Oh, don't you dare look back. Just keep your eyes on me.
I said, you're holding back.
She said, shut up and dance with me!
William sings the next part.
This woman is my destiny.
She said, ooh hoo! Shut up and dance with me!
We both laugh at how bizarre our voices sound but this doesn't stop us from us from singing the whole song. By the time we finish singing I look out of see that we're slowing down in a parking lot. I can see lights over the hedges lining the parking space.
And then it clicks. I've been here at the amusement park just once before and that was with my father. I remember being around ten years old and I barely remember the whole visit but a part keeps playing in my mind. The roller coaster.
Of course I was too young to ride it but I remember being impressed by the people who summed up the courage to go on.
"Cassandra!" William's hand waving in front of my face brings me back to the present.
"Sorry." I mumble as I run a hand through my hair.
"You look sad. What's wrong? If you don't want to..." He wants to say more but I cut in. "No! I want to stay here but it's just that the last and only time I came here was with dad."
"I still offer going somewhere else." He tells me.
I open the door and step out to prove that I'm eager to stay. He follows and locks the car. I look around and after turning my head this way and that a few times I realize that I'm looking for the escort car.
"No guards?" I ask William.
"Nope. It's dark so hardly anyone will recognize either of us and no one except father knows that we're here. So, we'll be fine."
He takes my hand and shoves the other one into his pocket. We walk in and look around. He faces me and asks. "What first?"
"Cotton Candy!" I exclaim.
"Nothing to eat till we've ridden the roller coaster." He tells me in a matter-of-fact voice.
"You're kidding me, right?" I ask surprised.
"No I'm not!"
"You said something fun!"
"Roller coasters are fun!"
"No they're not! They're scary!"
"They are fun! And we're riding it. That's final."
"So, do you want tickets?"
This makes us stop bickering and look up to see that we're standing in front of ticket booth with the guy looking down at us.
"Umm..." I start to speak but Will cuts in. "Yes. We'll take two."
I glare at him as he hands over the money and then gets the tickets. "Now, you can't back out because I've already paid."
"I hate you." I tell him as we walk towards the cue for the ride.
"I know that you still love me." He says kissing my cheek and I know that he's right. I can never hate William.
We stand behind a few girls who stand in a group, looking down at their phones. Every once in a while one of them holds up her phone and start squealing at whatever the screen shows. It seems as if they're taking turns to do this.
The girl facing us holds out her phone for the others to see and from where we're standing, both of us can see the screen too.
It's a picture of William!
"OMG! He's so cute!" One of them sighs.
Another one lets out a shrill scream. "I am in love with his smile!"
"Do you think he'd ever hug me?" The phone's owner asks. This causes another wave of comments to start but I ignore them and look at William, who's staring at the ground.
I nudge him which makes him look up. But at that very moment the people who were on the ride start getting off and our cue starts moving.
It has four seats in one row. William and I sit down next to another couple who're too excited to see who we are. We buckle our seat belts and soon the hydraulic systems start working, trapping me behind the bars.
All of a sudden the seats jolt and start moving. I feel us climbing up the track. The air rushes into my face, pushing my hair back from my face. My breathing starts to hitch and Will notices this because he gently places a hand on mine which is clutching the bars.
I turn my head to look at him but I wish that I hadn't because that was the very moment when the roller coaster reached the top and then dropped down.
I let out a scream that I'm not even sure belonged to me and before I know it I'm laughing. After a few minutes we reach level ground and start slowing down. I take deep breaths to try and slow down my breathing.
Once we've stopped completely. The bars move up and we unbuckle our seatbelts. William gets out first and then offers me his hand which I gladly take.
"How was it?" He asks once I'm munching on cotton candy to help calm myself.
"Fun." I reply, swallowing.
"I told you so." He says kissing the bridge of my nose and holds up our picture from the roller coaster. It's just the two of us and we're both laughing.
Happy Independence Day to all my Pakistani readers and since I won't be updating tomorrow so Happy Independence Day to my Indian readers too! :) I hope you all have a great day and have lots of fun!
