In the underwater world, there are two peoples. The Merfolk and sea dragons. Merfolk are elegant creatures yet have a reputation for luring sailors to their watery deaths, with their soft voices and tearing through them with their sharp teeth. Sea dragons are the apex predator of the deep. Known for causing storms. Close relatives to Merfolk. They have similar form, yet instead of being covered in soft, smooth scales like that of Merfolk and fish, they have the hard scales of dragons, claws and wings. They had the ability to shift into humans. Both were capable of using magic, though very few knew how. 18 years ago, Layla, Princess of the Sea dragons fell in love with prince Jude of the Merfolk. They were wed, soon after they met, however, Layla died while giving birth to their only child. Even though he was heartbroken, Jude refused to let it show, he refused to harm his daughter with his feelings. He accepted her immediately. Instead of the special golden scales that the royal family had held for generations, the princess was born with Navy blue, dotted with gold, just like the stars that Layla had described to him. Like a carbon copy of his deceased wife, except for the odd gold scale. His child had wings like her mother, and the same scales, yet her claws were retractable and was bigger than either species.The soft golden waves that flowed behind her, eyes that reflected her mood, She had the voice and beauty of the Merfolk and the raw power, abilities and features of the sea dragons. When she reaches the age of 14, her father informs her that she would be marrying a neighbouring prince. She flees the kingdom, and lives out as a rouge for 3 years with some of her friends, children of guards and servants. A mix of sea dragons and merfolk, though with the help of a stone, created by the hybrid Lucy's blood, can also turn human.

On the land, the massive country of Fiore, the land was dominated by humans. A few with the ability to use magic. King Igneel rules over them all. His wife died two years after their only child was born, Prince Natsu. Natsu had salmon hair and and large build. He uses fire dragon slaying magic. Yet, when Natsu reaches the age of 15, he runs away, after he discovers he would have to marry a princess from a foreign area that few heard of to strengthen ties, that he had never met. He runs away with his friends (also mages, and children of some of the guards) and becomes pirates. They sail the seas for 3 years. However, a storm sinks their ship.
