Chapter 32
"Pregnancy?!" Multiple voices in the room gasped while they stared at the screen. My eyes were glued to the rapidly moving organ on the screen, my breath hitched as my brain tried to understand everything.
Pregnancy? I was pregnant?
"From the sounds of it, you didn't know you were pregnant."
I finally tore my eyes away from the screen as I shook my head. "It's impossible. I haven't..." I trailed off, a slight blush spreading across my cheeks, but quickly brushed it off. We were all adults here. "I haven't had sex in months!" They didn't need to know the one and only time I ever had sex was on my wedding night...
As another pain hit me, I couldn't focus on the words that were being said in the room. My cries of pain made a doctor throw a sheet over my bottom half and then made the gesture of pulling down her pants. I nodded frantically and she managed to pull down my pajama pants and underwear without flashing everyone. As soon as she did that, her cold hands patted my knees, which I brought up weakly, and then spread them. Her next words had me gasping.
"She's fully crowned. We need OBGYN down here, now. We might have an premie."
The entire room quickly changed. The guards were ushered out of the crowded room, and half of the doctors left, only to be replaced with others. My mother moved next to me, and grabbed my hand when I reached for her.
"I'm scared," I cried as I clutched her hand tightly. Another pain, which I now knew were contractions hit me, and she cried out in pain with me.
"I know, Blu, I know. But it will all be alright. I'll be here with you to help you." Then she did something I hadn't experienced in a while. She kissed my forehead and placed her cheek on my head as the bed underneath me changed. "You can do this."
The next half hour was the longest and most painful thirty minutes of my life. I felt myself being torn a million times, my throat was aching from crying and grunting, and I was utterly exhausted. But when I felt something pop and the pain slowly faded away, the cries of a child filled the room for a few seconds.
"Where are they taking the baby?"
My weak lids managed to pry themselves open a smidge at my mothers words.
"We are taking her to do emergency and necessary tests on her. Since you didn't know about the pregnancy, we don't know if she's full term or..." The rest of the doctors words faded away as the last of my energy faded away. It didn't feel like that much later when my lids opened again, but this time, I was alone in the room and covered up.
My whole bottom half hurt like hell. My throat was parched, and I had no energy to move a finger. The only noise in the room was the constant beeping of my heart monitor, and the slow drip from my IV. I had managed to turn my body a bit when the door cracked open, and familiar heels clicked closer.
"You're awake," my mom breathed as she rushed towards me. She kissed my forehead again, and gave me a warm smile. "You just missed her. They took her to do one last test and then they will bring her back."
I blinked rapidly at her words. "So I did have a child? The pain isn't something I'm making up?"
She chuckled softly. "Childbirth isn't something you will ever forget, trust me."
Her words hit me right there and then. "I... I have a daughter?"
She nodded again. "Yes. And I have a granddaughter."
"But how did I not know I was pregnant? I wasn't showing and the last round didn't work!"
She shrugged. "Must have given a false negative. Unless you two had-"
My eyes widened at her words. "No! No, no, no. We weren't... that deep into our relationship... or whatever we had."
Her lips thinned, but she nodded and continued her soothing movements of her hand caressing my hair. She mumbled a few words to herself, before she sighed and brought her face into my peripheral vision again. "You know the press got wind of you coming to the hospital. We have to make something up if you don't want the world to know about your daughter."
There was that word again. Daughter. I had a daughter. I was a mother.
I shook my head at her words. "I don't want them to know. Say something about a burst appendix or something."
She nodded and smiled as she pulled her phone out from her back pocket. Shock flooded through me as I finally saw the outfit she was wearing: tailored jeans, an elbow length dark pink blouse, and high heeled boots. This was the most normal I had ever seen her wear.
"What are you wearing?" I questioned as she typed on her phone.
She looked down at her outfit for a few seconds before she shrugged. "Didn't feel like pampering up today. I wanted to come back as fast as I could, and pampering would have taken forever."
I smiled at her. "Well, it looks nice. You should wear outfits like this more often."
She put away her phone as she rolled her eyes. "Don't dwell on that thought much. It isn't going to happen."
Two soft knocks snapped out heads towards the door as it slowly swung open. A nurse popped her head into the room, and smiled when her eyes landed on me. She used her back to continue opening the door, and then turned around, giving me the full view of what she held in her hands.
The heart monitor besides me picked up pace as she got closer to me. My mouth dried, and my tongue ran over my lips as my eyes quickly fluttered toward my mom, who stared at the baby in awe.
"Mommy is awake. I bet mommy wants to hold her daughter now." The nurse cooed down at the baby. My eyes widened at her words as she finally stopped on the other side of my bed, and gave me a smile. "Are you ready to hold your daughter?"
Was I ready? Was I ready to finally hold a human being I didn't know I was carrying inside of me, and be the sole responsible adult for her? Was I ready to be a mother?
Her small, and soft cries snapped my attention to her again, and my hands automatically reached for her. As soon as her small body was in my arms, it was as if something inside of me clicked into place. A part of me that I didn't know I had reacted to the child that was in my arms, and gave it half of my soul. Gave it the love I didn't know a mother felt for her child until right now.
I didn't hear what the nurse said or bothered looking at her as she left. My eyes were stuck to the small bundle that had been causing me pain before, and I couldn't believe was the reason for the pain.
"She's mine? She's actually my daughter?" I whispered as her hand automatically wrapped around my pointer finger. My heart melted, as I tore my eyes away from her.
"Yes. She's yours, and she's perfectly healthy. She's a full term baby as well."
I felt something nuzzling my chest, and I looked down to see her burrowing her face on me. Soft pushing sounds came from her little lips, and I looked up at my mom for help.
She smiled, and then spent the rest of the hour with me as she showed me how to feed my baby.
"My baby," I whispered as I stared off into space as she continued to suckle from me. According to my moms comments, I was a lucky girl my milk was there. Some mothers don't get theirs until a few days later. "What should I name her?"
My mom looked up from her phone from the opposite side of the room. It had started beeping in the middle of the feeding, and she retreated to the white couch to give me more privacy. "Whatever you want, Blu. She's your child."
"So I can name her Pickle if I want?" I joked and smiled at her glare.
"I will not call my granddaughter after a damn cucumber. Be serious here Charlotte."
I chuckled and looked down at the baby, feeling her movements stopping. My mom stood up from her spot, and then showed me what to do next.
"Did you do this to me? I remember having nannies."
She looked flabbergasted at my words. "Of course I did. What kind of mother do you think I was, leaving my baby to a nanny? I might be queen, but I'm still a mother first. The nanny was there to help me when I had to step out, or at night. Everything else, I did myself. But after that, it became nannies. One couldn't handle your troubled self." She paused and smiled, looking down at her granddaughter. "If she's anything like you, you will definitely have trouble in your hands."
I gulped at her words and opened my mouth to say something, but the door opening paused me. My jaw dropped, and my eyes widened at the person standing in front of the open door, staring at us.
"Ian..."
