Chapter 17
I was way to warm. I could feel that my cheeks were flushed, and if that wasn't a giveaway, then the small beads of sweat on my forehead told me I was hot.
When I tried to move, something only tightened around me and I froze. My eyes snapped open, and I was seconds away from releasing a blood curling shriek when I remembered where I was and with who.
I knew he was still sleeping, -the soft snores on my ear couldn't mean anything else- so with a silent gulp, I slowly lifted his heavy arm up and away from me. Five minutes later, I was standing besides the bed, grunting and wiping the extra sweat I had released from the the amount of energy I had used to escape.
I didn't waste a second after that to pad to the living room to start a fire. It was freezing cold over here, and my breath could actually be seen with each huff I released. I sighed in relief when the fire sparked, releasing its warmth near my face a few minutes later. I stood there, toasting my hands to get some relief back into them, before I patted my way into the kitchen.
After much hunting and many mistakes later, I managed to conjure up some pancakes for breakfast....... Well at least I thought I did. I had more batter on me than the amount of pancakes on the plate, and the kitchen was covered in flour when I accidentally dropped it as I tried to balance all the items in one trip as I was too cold to make multiple turns.
"What happened here?"
I whirled around, spatula in hand as I blushed and shrugged. "I wanted pancakes."
"I can see that," he laughed as he picked one up and bit into it, making me frown.
"Work for it. Finish beating the eggs and turn the bacon for me."
We worked in silence, not talking to one another unless it was for small things. Not even ten minutes later, we were sitting near the fire, eating breakfast and watching the flames burn and flick on the logs.
"So...."
I sighed and stood up, ignoring his gaze. I quickly washed my dish and the pans we had dirtied up and then hopped into the only shower. I could clean the flour later on.....
"Don't use up all the hot water! I need to shower as well!"
"Whatever!" I called back, blinded as the soap rushed down my eyes. After fifteen minutes, I was standing in front of the mirror, brushing my curls while I tried to keep the heat in my body. The only mirror in the whole cabin was in a dresser in front of the bed, so I had to endure the slightly cold temperature as I fought with the nest on my head.
With a groan, I threw the imaginary white flag and just pulled it up into a ponytail. I wrapped the scarf around my neck and snuggled into a thick jacket before I doubled up on socks.
"Where are you going?"
"Why do you care?" I pulled up one of the snow boots and wiggled my toes, trying to ignore the tightness of it.
He growled slightly as he stomped towards me, the heat from the shower still with him. "I don't. But since there is nothing near us and we are the only ones in miles, I don't want my company to disappear."
I smiled a bit. Awww. "Well if you must know, I want to go build a snowman. The snow stopped and who knows when it will be like this again."
He looked at me like if I was crazy. "Are you serious?" I just stared at him stupidly and he sighed. "Fine, wait up. I'm coming too."
"Wait, what? You are?"
He didn't say a word. He quickly finished dressing and then looked at me, motioning out to the front of the cabin. "Are you just going to stare, or are you coming?"
With a quick mental slap, I finished and hurried my way towards the door. Once I flung it open, I shivered slightly at the cold wind, but smiled once I stepped foot on the crunchy, white snow.
"It's cold!"
"Suck it up. No one told you to come." I laughed as I began to pick up the frozen water in my gloved palms. I turned around to face him, a huge smile on my face and breathed out, "Snow!" I threw it up in the air, and as it cascaded back down, I fell backwards with a hard thud.
"Shit! Are you alright?" His face came into my view as I began to flop my arms and legs back and forth.
"Relax. I'm making a snow angel."
"You're what?"
I rolled my eyes and lifted my hands. "Pick me up."
"You have legs! Pick yourself up!" I sighed and just continued to wiggle my arms up like a little kid that wanted to be picked up. With a groan, he grabbed the top of my arms and pulled me up with ease. Once I was next to him, I motioned down to where I last once was and smiled.
"Snow angel!"
He squinted his eyes. "I don't see it."
I snorted. "That's because you have no imagination."
He gasped and took a step back. "What did you just say?"
I just grinned and shrugged. "You heard me."
"Run."
"Huh?"
He went down for a few seconds and then came back up with a palmed size ball of snow. "Run."
My eyes widened. "You wouldn't."
"Try me," he laughed and then proceeded to throw the ball at me, hitting my left shoulder. I gasped, looked at him for a few seconds before I screamed.
"WAR!"
For the next half hour, we ran, yelped, and cursed each other out as we threw snow chunks at one another. At one point, I had sneaked up behind him and managed to throw some snow up his shirt.
"HOLY FUCKING SHIT! THATS FUCKING COLD!" I just laughed and screamed when I felt him collide with me, bringing me down with another hard flop. "Revenge is sweet!"
He grinned evilly as he gathered up some snow in his hands as I squirmed underneath his heavy weight. "Don't you dare! Get off me you big JERK!" I shrieked at the end since he managed to rub the snow all over my back once he had flipped me over.
"Like I said, revenge is sweet."
"Run." Was all I had said and that's where we were at right now, still hiding from one another with our piles of ammunition.
I heard nothing. I knew he wasn't behind me, since the last time I saw him, he was going to the cabin. After a few minutes, I licked my frozen lips and tugged the scarf off my neck.
"Charlotte."
I screamed and jumped up a foot, whirling around at the sound of his voice. I had two balls of snow in each hand, and was ready to throw them at him when I saw his peaceful surrender. "I'm done. I come in peace."
"How did you find me? I didn't see or hear you come to me!"
He just gave me a small smile and shook his head. "Let's go inside. We have been out here for a while already and we need to warm up."
Was he crazy? I was just beginning! I had never felt this free before!
"You go inside. I'm staying out here to enjoying my vacation, not like some grumpy party killer."
He grabbed my arm and began to pull me back to the cabin. "Just go inside for a few minutes and warm up. You are going to give yourself hyper-"
"I'll be there in a few minutes," I hissed, yanking my arm away from his grasp. "Just let me be out here and have some fun before the snow starts to fall again. It's a miracle it stopped for right now."
He just stared at me for a few minutes before he rolled his eyes. "Don't say I didn't warn you. I'm not coming back out here for you."
"I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself." I sniffed as I walked away. I didn't even turn to see his reaction. If he couldn't handle the cold, why did he come outside with me in the first place?
With heavy stomps, I just randomly began to walk and kept on going in a straight line. Anything to get away from him. I just made sure that my footprints were deep enough so I could follow them back, since I had no idea of my surroundings.
As the minutes rolled by, snow began to fall, but that didn't stop me from pausing and looking around me. It was beautiful. The trees, frozen to the touch, and icicles hanging ever so often, looking like if they were racing against one another to see which one would go the farthest.
No animal in sight. There was no noise except my heavy breathing and my shattering teeth.
Maybe I should go back.....
With a sigh, I turned back around and began to retrace my steps. After about ten minutes, the snow began to fall harder and I frowned at myself. I couldn't have gotten out that far.
I looked down at my path and cursed as I saw my footprints rapidly disappearing with the fresh snow. I tried to run, but my feet just sunk in even more with each step, making my progress go even slower. When I couldn't see them anymore a few minutes later, and I still wasn't near the cabin, that's when I definitely began to freak out.
"Oh my god.... I am so stupid!" I whispered to the air as I hugged myself even tighter, trying to keep whatever warmth I had left. "Why do I have to be so stubborn!!"
I paused, made a full circle and whimpered when I realized everything looked the same. Oh fuck!
"IAN!" I began to scream, hoping he wasn't mad at me. But if he was mad at me, he would probably just ignore my screams. "IAN! PLEASE ANSWER ME IF YOU CAN HEAR MY VOICE! IM LOST AND I DONT KNOW HOW TO GET BACK!" I shrieked as the cold wind blew, freezing my body even more. "IAN!!!"
I managed to take two steps before I was pushed down by some invisible force. My face got swallowed up by the snow, and I panicked when I couldn't get back up. After a few seconds, I managed to receive the fresh, sharp cold wind, but I couldn't feel anything: my face was frozen. My feet were frozen and aching, and I could feel the melting snow seeping through the doubled socks.
I walked for a bit, trembling as the wind just picked up even more, throwing the snow all around me, making it almost impossible to see. "I-IAN-N!"
Seconds of silence. "CHARLOTTE!" My heart soared. He wasn't avoiding me! He was looking for me!!!
"IAN!" I managed to scream through shattering lips.
"CHARLOTTE! FOLLOW MY VOICE!" What? Why wasn't he coming to me? What did I have to go to him! The gentlemen he was..... "CHARLOTTE!"
"I..... CANT..... SEEEE!!!"
"FOLLOW MY VOICE! IF I LEAVE THE CABIN, THEN WE BOTH WONT KNOW WHERE IT IS AT!" Oh. That was smart!
"WELL KEEP S-SCREAMING DUMB-B-BASS!"
"DUMBASS? DID YOU JUST CALL ME A DUMBASS? I AM NOT THE ONE WHO DECIDED TO HAVE A STROLL IN THE MIDDLE OF A SNOW STORM! I AM FREEZING MY ASS OFF OVER HERE JUST FOR YOUR CRAZY ASS!"
I couldn't reply. My feet were numb and I was getting tired of fighting against the wind. I managed to take one step before my knees buckled and I went down.
"CHARLOTTE! COME ON DONT SCARE ME! THIS ISNT FUNNY!" His voice was near. If I squinted, I could see the brightness of the cabin and that made me smile.
But I was too cold to move. Me and my stupid mind... I curled up into a ball on the cold floor and tried to shiver, but my body wouldn't. I felt my eyes closing shut as the tiredness slowly consumed me.
The last thing I managed to see before I passed out was a black shadow.
