Chapter 6
Pure anger rushed through my veins as I fought the current that was engulfing me. As I tried to remain at the surface of the river countless memories flooded through my mind, it all hit me in waves of torture and regret. The various faces of all those I have ever killed for these people suddenly filled me with guilt. I was being attacked from the inside and outside, both screaming at me, just to end it all. I wanted to give in, allow myself the same fate that those before me have faced by my hand. Just let me drown here and never again worry about anyone.
Before I closed my eyes to offer a full surrender to the cruel waves, I saw that boy again. Ezoryn, but now he's known as Ryan. The bandit that had saved my life, and I in return, he was floating as if unconscious. I may be giving up, but he deserves a chance to continue on. Swallowing my pride, and maybe a mouthful of water, I swam over to him as quick as I could. He was completely out, he was still breathing at least. Wrapping one arm around him I tried to fight the brutal attack of the water, struggling to get him to the other side of the river, away from Senjore. Senjore probably knew all of this, everything that has ever happened to me. He probably knew well enough that the dreams were memories but never said a word, if I gave him the chance he may even know the truth.
Just as I was nearly to the other side we popped our heads just enough out of the water. With the tide I would be unable to get him the rest of the way there, but without me he may just make it. Instantly I put all of my might into pushing him with the current at the perfect angle to carry him to the shore. I watched as he floated right to the shore, and as soon as he touched, his eyes shot opened as if awaking from a terrible nightmare. His hair clinging to his face, he grabbed a nearby root and hoisted himself up. But then he turned around. He saw me there, still fighting the current. He had the same reaction I had when I first saw him under the water, he knew who I was, or at least understand that we used to know each other. Wanting terribly for the nightmare to end I decided to just try and swim for the shore. He instantly reached out to me, I was only a foot away from his hand and it would take whatever strength I had just to be able to reach him. Though current was ripping me to shreds, I was being pulled away faster than I was moving towards the shore. With one finally urge of strength I was able to launch off of a rock that barely grazed my foot on the river's ground and just reach his hand. I grabbed it, and before I nearly slipped away from his grip he squeezed my hand harder so he wouldn't let go. With him pulling at me it seemed easier to fight the current. We had both made it.
For a split second his eyes averted from me, as I turned what was above the water I didn't even see what caught his eyes before I was sent hurdling through the water. Totally disoriented I was lucky enough to be able to keep a grip, well more like he did. I was instantly yanked right out of the water and landed on top of him. Taking a minute to let myself become reoriented I focused on the small things. Listening to his heart, feeling the movement of his chest while he breathed. Neither of us wanted to be the first to talk, and neither of us wanted to let the other person talk first. Lifting our heads we just looked into each other's eyes. I could tell he saw it too. "I'll go get some firewood." He looked away while shifting himself away from me. He was scared, that had probably been the only memory recall he ever had, I remember how scared I had been with mine but my first memory wasn't life threatening.
Still limp and weak from the current I was unable to move or fight back. I watched as he walked away, it almost hurt to watch him leave me. Tore my heart out for someone I rarely knew to abandon me when I've always been used to only depending on myself, well I guess since my memories were stolen from me. More flashes of people I have killed mercilessly keeping flashing in my head, I guess have ten years of being an assassin racks up with murders. I'm a murderer, and the blood will never wash off of my hands. I remained lying there on my side, visions of murdering each and everyone one was now tormenting me in ways I never thought they could. I was trying to forget everything, though even forgetting would still haunt me. No amount of memory serum would ever clear my conscious, I knew that as I stared at my hands in horror.
I tried to at least focus on the world surrounding me. The river was glistening beautifully with the endless waves crashing over the shore sides and the occasional boulders. It looked so much calmer now that I was fighting for my life. Across the river I could see the various trees swaying and singing with the wind. There was a dear family, innocent and delicate. They were just there, standing over what looked to be a fallen ally of their beloved dear community. Shot by a poacher no doubt, I can see what the trail of blood causes, and that the real victims are actually the family members. As if they could sense danger the family quickly fled downstream. I could barely hear the rustling of the leaves before I saw Senjore burst out of the bushes. He was ferociously looking through the river for any trace of me, I could tell based on the worry he held in his eyes alone. Luckily the meander of the river let him look the opposite way first before seeing me. "Come on, give me your arm and I'll help you get out of the way before he sees you." Ryan appeared over me.
Quickly and quietly we moved behind a bush where he couldn't find us. That would've been a close one. "Ryan! You bandit! What did you do with her! I can hear your thoughts! You can't hide from me!" Senjore blew up, why was he so afraid and angry?
"He has mind reading abilities." I whispered. But why couldn't he read mine? He has always been able to, maybe he wasn't focusing on me.
Ryan decided to quickly burst out of the bush. "What do you want with her? All you allowed to happen was turn her into an assassin. And yes, we know. You were supposed to be on our side and keep them away from us so we could get to safety!" Ryan hollered across the river. Apparently he remembered more than me.
"Well I tried! I saved her from the river but she ran before I could do anything. She found you at least, and you tell her to just run and leave without you? A nine year old girl told to run through the forest full of assassins and bandits and hope she wouldn't get caught?" Senjore knew everything that happened. Yet he kept it from me, I can't believe I thought he was my friend. The countless times I've saved him.
"You didn't even try to help. For all I know you lead them right to us. You were such a great help back then but now just go find that God awful person you call a mother." Ryan yelled, purely sarcastic.
"My mother is dead!" Senjore cried.
"I don't care, just stay away and leave us alone. Alteria doesn't want to have to bother with you."
"Alteria?" Senjore sounded completely worried, "I have to talk to her, Ter please come out. There's something you need to know!" I was shaking in the bush, he latched onto my thoughts I could feel it, but I was too scared to show myself, too terrified to move.
"You stay away from her!" Ryan screamed. Why was he being so protective? He literally just met me, well maybe. How much more to this story was there that I didn't know, didn't understand?
I peaked out of behind the bush just for a second and Senjore saw me. Instantly he started to trace backwards, just to get a running start. He jumped over half the river in under a second. Fighting the current he would be to the shore in under a minute. Ryan turned to me and helped me stand up. "Are you able to walk?" He asked concerned.
"Just give me a second." Closing my eyes I sent a glowing light throughout my body, and as I opened them Ryan just stared. "Don't question it, let's just go." Instantly taking off we started running through the forest, Ryan rarely being able to keep up. The dirt felt good between my toes and the grass tickled my feet.
"Slow down Alteria." Ryan called to me.
"Just call me Ter," I stopped and turned to him. "Let's keep going, if I know Senjore he'll be catching up any second. Break a couple twigs in that direction, he'll expect a bandit not to worry about leaving a trail."
But, he would also expect that I'm with him. I watched as Ryan broke a few of the twigs and walked back over to me. "So which way?" Ryan asked trying to pretend he wasn't offended by my comment.
"Just follow me." I ran straight down the path we broke the twigs on.
"But you said,"
"There's also me with you. He'll also expect me to create a decoy path while he ran in the other direction." I explained.
"Or he caught up with you a while ago and followed you." Senjore's voice called from behind us.
"What do you want? You've already let that women control my whole life, and apparently you were in on it and knew everything the whole time." I panted looking at him, glaring at him.
"I didn't know who you two were then. I thought I was just helping a few kids cross through the forest cause my friend asked me to. If I knew I would have charted a totally different path, if I knew you would have been safe at Lord Cralmon's castle all these years instead of killing him and leaving his kid with no memories!" Senjore flipped.
"You killed Lord Cralmon?" Ryan looked at me.
"I was an assassin, I couldn't say no to an assignment. And it's the only time I can leave that room." I explained.
"Look Senjowili or whatever your name is, just leave me and Alteria, I mean Ter alone, and go kill for fun. Come on." Ryan turned and grabbed my arm as we started walking away.
"Ter, I hope you are able to find your way home. Ezoryn, take care of her." Senjore finally gave in and turned the other way. "If you two ever need to find me return home."
Home, what home? I had no home. How I wished to have woken up from this dream, if only it was the dream.
